AIBU to think paying for packing service when moving is ok

I am moving soon so getting quotes for removals. I asked for quotes and the packing service is around £200 extra (and an extra half day). Thinking this is the way forward I told DH who thought it s waste of money.
He asked his mum and brother who we saw on Saturday. They recoiled in horror, his mum open mouthed that we would even think of having this service. I couldn't quite believe this as I thought it was a no brainer and so much easier than doing it ourselves. DH even suggested moving furniture himself to which I replied I wouldn't help him and he'd have to ask his family to help him if that's what he wanted to do.
AIBU to think paying for packing is a great idea? Thoughts please as I am just shocked at negative reaction to what I thought was a very reasonable idea.

I would try to eat as much fridge/freezer stuff as possible but if stuck with lots of £££ meat I suppose I’d put them in the cooler and bring them in the car?

If you’re moving hours away you just have to give it to the neighbours I guess.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 10/09/2018 18:53

When we did it the packing service included the cost of the boxes etc too, which would have been about £80 (I think) if we'd bought them.

Fstar · 10/09/2018 18:57

Moving is stressful enough so £200 is a bloody bargain, do it!

smallchanceofrain · 10/09/2018 19:00

Worth every penny. Our packers were brilliant. Once the furniture was in our new place they put a lot of stuff back in the furniture they'd packed it from - clothes in wardrobes, books in bookcases etc. They saved me hours and everything arrived intact - something that might not have happened if I'd been wrapping breakables myself.

CherryPavlova · 10/09/2018 19:00

I can’t imag not paying someone to pack.

pumpkinspicetime · 10/09/2018 19:01

It is the only way I will move, total bargain, the pace the guys move at is amazing !

Fruitbatdancer · 10/09/2018 19:06

Do it do it. It’s a bargain.
Also, when we last moved we had more stuff than they thought and they had to lay on an extra lorry Shock for free as they had packed so well/ Badly depending on how u look at it that there was too many boxes and furtniture for one lorry. They’d probably have charged us extra if they hadn’t done the packing themselves!
It was the biggest bargain of our move!
I didn’t pack 1 or 2 boxes of personal stuff before they arrived Wink

Mummyh2016 · 10/09/2018 19:07

I work in the office of a removal company and we don’t make any money off packing services, what we charge covers the cost of the materials and the time. We encourage people to take out a packing service. If they’re a BAR accredited company you’ll find that owner packed items won’t be covered for damage anyway.

BrickByBrick · 10/09/2018 19:24

Worth its weight in gold. Came one day and packed it all up. Ours was quite a bit as we had a lot of stuff but we agreed to empty the loft, shed etc.

The packing stuff alone made it worth the cost. The boxes we collapsed and they came and picked them up. We had a sack of bubble wrap and a huge pile of wrapping paper so again that would have been costly.

Never wanted an unpacking service, I wanted to be able to put stuff where I wanted. Though we still have a lot to unpack (moved June)

Glittertwins · 10/09/2018 19:29

The packing part was the only part of moving house that we would willingly pay for again!

Glumglowworm · 10/09/2018 19:30

It’s an optional service that a company provides, totally not unreasonable to use that service!

ElspethFlashman · 10/09/2018 19:36

Excuse the hyper dramatic caps but my packing service was THE GREATEST THING I EVER PAID FOR.

Seriously.

No, I'm serious.

Took 4 lads eight hours and two trips in a huge lorry. No way could we have done that with 2 jobs and 2 small kids. No way.

Even DH agreed afterwards it was the best money we spent during the house move.

BrickByBrick · 10/09/2018 19:38

Ours was more worth it as it was boiling hot.

NWQM · 10/09/2018 19:40

Honestly worth every penny especially if packing material included. You could spend that on decent boxes and bubble wrap.

Tryagaintomorrow · 10/09/2018 19:42

I did as much as I could and had an agreement they would pack what I hadn’t, best money ever. Baby was 8 weeks at the time, and I’d certainly use the service in the future!

We moved last year and had the packing service. They came the day before and packed almost everything except essentials.
Next day they packed the rest.
It was brilliant.

PicaK · 10/09/2018 20:03

It's a no brainer. It's worth every single penny. They are really good at their job - they'll be far better than you. And you can live "as normal" until the day before. It takes so much stress away.
My top tip is to buy a load of the yellow and black "Keep Out/DANGER" tape that will be in the supermarkets/Poundland for Hallowe'en. It's the best way of signalling what NOT to pack!!

LittleBearPad · 10/09/2018 20:11

Do it. I am never ever packing again.

hiplink · 10/09/2018 20:12

We've moved multiple times over the last few years and have used a packing service. Takes away lots of stress and the need to live surrounded by boxes for days as a team of people can pack everything the day before the move. We do always make sure we have a good sort and clear out before we move though.

eternalopt · 10/09/2018 20:20

Best money I've spent. Was so easy. They use loads more packaging than you would because they don't care how much they get through or how many boxes they fill and when they fill a box, it goes straight on the van - no dancing round boxes for two weeks like you would if you do it yourself.

Haireverywhere · 10/09/2018 21:00

I had to pay £350 for packing and it was worth it!

madeoficecream · 10/09/2018 21:01

have packed for ourselves 3 times now. Have almost got divorced 3 times....
So yeah its worth £200 if you have it.

Seeingadistance · 10/09/2018 21:04

Do it!

It's amazing!

Poodletip · 10/09/2018 21:37

YANBU, had a similar discussion with dh when we last moved. I told him we would pay for packers or he could do it himself because I certainly wasn't doing it. Funnily enough we got packers. More than worth it.
