Grocery Deliveries

TheWiseManOrTheShepherd · 10/09/2018 10:51

So I usually work from home on a Monday, due to this, this is often the day I book my grocery delivery to arrive.
Over the past couple of months my order has arrived early (20,30, even 40 minutes early) EVERY SINGLE TIME! Now I realise some people may find this great-can then get on with their day, leave the house etc. I definitely do not find it great, I book that specific slot for a reason and I pay for the privilege.

I either arrange calls to fit around my slot, eat breakfast, tidy upstairs-you get the gist but I like to complete these tasks before my groceries arrive as it takes an age to unpack and Distribute into fridges, cupboards etc.
So this morning, I had a slot booked for 11-12 am. Around 10 am, I made myself a nice bacon sandwich and latte and sat down to watch last nights TOWIE (I own the shame for this, that’s a whole other thread Grin ) 10.15 the bell rings!! It’s the damn Sainsbury’s driver!

Now obviously I take the groceries when this happens and am polIte to the driver but I really want to shout at him “No! You’re not meant to be here yet!!”

Am I unreasonable to find this as irritating as I do?
I know they have a job to do and if they’re early, it makes up for time they may lose, sat in traffic etc but it really does irk me when I’ve booked a specific time.

Also my bacon sandwich and latte is now cold 😭

Other supermarket delivery drivers get in trouble if they are early. or system doesnt allow it to be signed for. You are payjng for a service you aren't recieving. Complain.

Frosty66611 · 10/09/2018 10:54

Who do you shop with? I get my deliveries with Morrison’s and they always call beforehand to check if it’s ok to come early. If it’s not convenient then they wait until my booked slot time. When I used to shop with asda they would often show up early unannounced and it would piss me off. I’d always be in the middle of something like having a shower. They’d also show up late sometimes too and i’d be even more pissed off as they’d never apologise

Nikephorus · 10/09/2018 10:54

If they're going to be more than 5 mins early they should ring to check it's convenient & go to another delivery if it's not. Next time, ignore the door!

Katinkka · 10/09/2018 10:54

I have this all the time with Morrison’s. It drives me bloody mad too. I also book my times for a reason. Not sure what the answer is.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 10/09/2018 10:55

YANBU. I have had the Tesco driver ring a couple of times and ask if I'd mind if he came a bit earlier (both times when I'd booked a 8-9 or 9-10pm slot, and was his last drop of the shift), which is totally fine. But no, you've booked and paid for a specific slot, it's reasonable to expect that to be kept. What if you weren't in?!

InappropriateGavels · 10/09/2018 10:58

Have you complained to Sainsbury's?

It is Ocado policy (and therefore Morrisons, because they use Ocado infrastructure) to call before delivering early to make sure it is convenient, and if it is not then they do not do so. I would be really surprised if Sainsbury's operate a different policy of turning up outside the allocated slot without permission, it's stupid and alienates their customers. If you're not complaining about it, they don't know it's happening so they can't do anything to stop it.

TheWiseManOrTheShepherd · 10/09/2018 10:59

Greendale, it’s not really ridiculous when I’m taking a work call and it’s interrupted when it needent have been as I booked a slot. Fair enough in respect to the cleaning, breakfast routine, I accept that it’s a minor inconvenience but in regards to work calls, I genuinely do not believe it to be ridiculous.

I was absolutely livid a fortnight ago when my order arrived very early (45 mins at least). They called but I couldn’t pick up as I was on a call with a client. Fuckers took it all back to the depot then delivered it the next day minus the frozen stuff comprising about 70% of the order.

BarryTheKestrel · 10/09/2018 11:02

If I book an online food delivery for a set time, it's usually because I will only be home between those times, turning up early would inconvenience me as I wouldn't be there, and because they have attempted delivery they would class it as a failed delivery. I had this happen with Asda a few times and as such no longer shop with them. If I book and pay for a time slot and they show up 30 minutes early, that is their failing, not mine, yet I was the one without the food or the money, being penalised for it.

Complain OP. You are paying for a service you aren't recieving. Even if it isn't a massive inconvenience now, one day you will be out and miss your early delivery and be hugely screwed over for it.

serbska · 10/09/2018 11:03

Tesco have rung a few times to see if they can deliver early, sometimes they can’t as I’m on my way home from work and they’ve always waited no problem.

PhilODox · 10/09/2018 11:04

Ocado always call if they're running early, and it's always to check if it's ok to deliver early rather than they're saying they will be early.
I haven't used Sainsbury's, but they might be miffed if they come early, as there is unlikely to be anyone in.

LostInShoebiz · 10/09/2018 11:04

Completely agree with PP re all those “minor” inconveniences. They can be pretty fundamental given your own circumstances on any given day. And in any case, you pay for a slot not the hour or so before or after depending on traffic, workload or even the way the wind blows (judging by my local Ocado depot).

aperolspritzplease · 10/09/2018 11:04

I have Sainsbury's - if they're early they call and ask if it's ok to deliver.

PhilODox · 10/09/2018 11:06

But you're right- seriously not ok if you're working and they turn up expecting to drop the delivery.
Complain, pointing out the slot you've booked is the time you want.

WatcherintheRye · 10/09/2018 11:07

Why does the op sound ridiculous? That's surely why you have the option to book a specific time slot - so you can be ready, and not in the middle of taking a shower, making a phone call, cleaning out the cat litter, having your breakfast, etc. etc. And the worst part of any big shop, online or otherwise, is having to put it all away!

Thesearmsofmine · 10/09/2018 11:08

I find Sainsbury’s always deliver early, they do ring first though to check it is ok. Ocado are always good, my delivery this morning was late but he did ring to let us know in plenty of time.

notanurse2017 · 10/09/2018 11:09

I love that your description of working from home consists mostly of watching tv, clearing cupboards and making and eating bacon sandwiches!

TheWiseManOrTheShepherd · 10/09/2018 11:10

They have never called me to notify me of being early, they literally just turn up and ring the bell.

I thought I may of been unreasonable to complain as they have a job to do and as mentioned in my original post, I tried to make allowances for their timings in case they are stuck in traffic or maybe delivering to an elderly person so certain deliveries take longer.

I do own the fact that my breakfast thing this morning is trivial, it was meant semi lighthearted although I was miffed at my cold breakfast but my work calls being interrupted does irritate me because it isn’t professional having to either put people on hold or promise to call back. Confused

Working from home and settling down to watch TOWIE? Are you recruiting OP sounds like a great job! Seriously though, I WFH too and would be annoyed if I've arranged delivery around work commitments, but if I was just watching TV it wouldn't really bother me.....

AprilLady4 · 10/09/2018 11:12

Sainsbury's always call and ask if they want to deliver early; and they are fine about it if I say not convenient.

Asda used to deliver early nearly every week. Then I found out you can use the Delivery Instructions box to request they not deliver early. That mostly works.

jay55 · 10/09/2018 11:15

Amazon fresh is like this, theyve arrived on a weekend 30mins early when I’m still in the shower. I now assume they’ll be early when I book the slot.

Tesco have always called ahead if they’re early or late.

RedSkyLastNight · 10/09/2018 11:16

Unless I'm missing something, can't you just not answer the door?
They are not to know that you are actually in the house - many people wouldn't be if they hadn't booked that delivery slot.

TheWiseManOrTheShepherd · 10/09/2018 11:18

For those questioning my apparent easy day WFH, this isn’t the case, Monday is my only day WFH, I’m then in the office from Tues-Sat. I had started work this morning at 6.30am and worked through until just after 9.30am which is then when I made breakfast and watched my trash TV, I will work until late into this evening so although it may seem that I have a nice easy Monday-this is unfortunately not the case.

Food arriving at the start of the time slot is nice, but more than a few minutes early is annoying and uncceptable if it's as early as yours is. You pick a certain time for a reason!
