Grocery Deliveries

TheWiseManOrTheShepherd · 10/09/2018 10:51

So I usually work from home on a Monday, due to this, this is often the day I book my grocery delivery to arrive.
Over the past couple of months my order has arrived early (20,30, even 40 minutes early) EVERY SINGLE TIME! Now I realise some people may find this great-can then get on with their day, leave the house etc. I definitely do not find it great, I book that specific slot for a reason and I pay for the privilege.

I either arrange calls to fit around my slot, eat breakfast, tidy upstairs-you get the gist but I like to complete these tasks before my groceries arrive as it takes an age to unpack and Distribute into fridges, cupboards etc.
So this morning, I had a slot booked for 11-12 am. Around 10 am, I made myself a nice bacon sandwich and latte and sat down to watch last nights TOWIE (I own the shame for this, that’s a whole other thread Grin ) 10.15 the bell rings!! It’s the damn Sainsbury’s driver!

Now obviously I take the groceries when this happens and am polIte to the driver but I really want to shout at him “No! You’re not meant to be here yet!!”

Am I unreasonable to find this as irritating as I do?
I know they have a job to do and if they’re early, it makes up for time they may lose, sat in traffic etc but it really does irk me when I’ve booked a specific time.

Also my bacon sandwich and latte is now cold 😭

I WFH and have Sainsbury's too and mine always call if they want to come early. I'd be a bit annoyed if I were you too.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/09/2018 11:34

If my Sainsbury's delivery is going to be early, the driver always phones to check that is is convenient. (Sometimes he is only a couple of streets away, delivering to someone else, and has a delivery for me for later in the morning, but rings o see if I can accept it rather than go miles away and then come bak in an hour.).

Usually it's okay for me, but if not I just say - Sorry, I'm busy now, can you come at the agreed time? It's never been a problem. I'm surprised that your driver doesn't do this too.

I would ring up the freephone number on your receipt and explain the problem. Ask if the driver can call you rather than just arrive on the doorstep.

Also - if you refused a couple of the deliveries, and told him to come back at the arranged time, he might get the message. Grin

A friend of mine is a delivery driver. Last week they delivered a stackload of ice at about 6.05 (in the 6-7pm slot). The homeowner asked if they could come back later because they had no freezer space and their party wasn't starting till later!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/09/2018 11:39

They’d also show up late sometimes too and i’d be even more pissed off as they’d never apologise

My Sainsbury drivers have only once been late - when there was a huge and unexpected snowfall and the roads were blocked. I got a complimentary bottle of wine Grin.

Do you know how ridiculous you sound?

It doesn't sound ridiculous at all.

Why does it sound ridiculous?

theunsure · 10/09/2018 11:46

That would annoy me OP.

Ocado are sometimes early and always ask if they can come - if you say no they are perfectly happy to wait. We live rurally so they often have a big gap between drops so they are just trying to use the time well and not waste fuel. If we are home then we don't mind it being early - but if I was working it'd drive me nuts.

I'd complain and then not answer the door if they come early! But you shouldn't have to do that.

ForalltheSaints · 10/09/2018 11:48

YANBU. Not that I have ever experienced this, and my mum who really depends on these has not either.

SoyDora · 10/09/2018 11:49

Yes it would annoy me too.
We have Morrisons delivery and they always call me if they’re early. Sometimes I say it’s not convenient (if I’m not actually at home yet) and they wait.
Morrisons has far fewer substitutions than Sainsburys and fresher fruit and veg too!

MarcieBluebell · 10/09/2018 11:52

Ynbu.

Racecardriver · 10/09/2018 11:52

Just use a different supermarket. This would really puss me off. Ocado are great ime.

JellyBaby666 · 10/09/2018 11:53

I'd complain. You work from home that day so you're around for an early delivery which is great but others may not be. Tesco send you a text with their estimation of when they'll arrive which is good, so I might book for 6-8pm and then just before 6 usually I get an automated text which says it'll be with you between 6.10 & 7.10, for example. What would your driver do if you weren't home? Come back? Or have it as a failed delivery and you'd have to rebook?

MissMooMoo · 10/09/2018 12:06

The OP does not sound ridiculous, this would really annoy me.
I would complain to sainsburys.
I would also not answer the door if it was not convenient for me

Gingerivy · 10/09/2018 12:24

Tesco has delivered my groceries early a few times, but they always ring and ask first.

Try putting something in the delivery instructions saying I cannot accept delivery earlier than my scheduled delivery time. See if that helps.

Andie179 · 15/12/2019 12:28

As a delivery driver, I’m always happy if I make up time and get to a customer early, it’s very rare, but nice when it happens. If I’m early, I will knock and ask if it’s convenient to make the delivery early. Most customers are happy with that. If Iarrive early and there is no one home, I will wait until the allotted time. If it’s an 11-12 delivery slot and it’s 11:05 and there is no one home then I will try and contact the customer again, but if there is no response then I will leave.

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 15/12/2019 12:58

Ocado always ring if they're going to be early. If I'm not at home they assure me that's fine and arrive when the delivery is booked.

minionsrule · 15/12/2019 13:33

I get Ocado and always get Saturday deliveries. We used to do mornings around 11 till 12 but they ALWAYS turned up around 45 mins early. I was always at DS's football and wouldn't hear my phone ringing but they would just turn up anyway. Once they called me twice and texted.... i book a slot for a reason guys!
Now switched to evenings and they are always bang on the end if the slot and NEVER early or at start of slot

Bumblebee2302 · 15/12/2019 14:05

Always seems to happen to me with my Asda Christmas deliveries. A few years ago, it was a Saturday 8am-9am slot and they turned up before 7.30am without notice - I wasn't even up yet! No apology and just a bit of a grunt when I mentioned he was very early.

The next year, I booked the very last Christmas slot, maybe 10pm-11pm, as I was out for the night and planned to be home 15 mins before the slot. I actually got home about 30 mins before - and the driver was already at the door! I asked him what would've happened if I hadn't arrived home just now, bearing in mind he came before the slot, and he said he would've just come back, but who knows - he already had all the crates with him at the door!

Fair enough if they ring in advance, but it's not right when they don't.
