I am about to buy some decent shoes or wellies to walk the dog in we normally do country parks and beach walks both rocky and sandy. I need something sturdy as have baby well 15month old in carrier aswell.

Whats better wellies or walking boots? Reconsiderations welcome...budget around £30 to £40
ps I love these

I wrecked my feet walking in wellies. The arches under my foot collapsed, I now have bunions, and in winter when I wore thick socks the change in the way the boot fitted gave me achilles tendonitis. I was walking at least 5 miles a day, every day though.

Spend a bit more and get some decent walking boots. You might get a bit wet or muddy, but you won't damage your feet.

GreyHare · 09/09/2018 21:53

I currently wear either trainers or my walking sandals in the dry but for wet weather and winter I have thesewww.amazon.co.uk/Toggi-Columbus-Unisex-Adults-Wellington-Copper/dp/B006KZ8IG2/ref=sr_1_1?s=shoes&keywords=toggi%2Bcolumbus&th=1&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1536526233&sr=1-1 I think I paid £90ish for them as they seem to go up and down in price on amazon, but they are comfy waterproof and are good and grippy.

adaline · 09/09/2018 21:54

I have waterproof trainers for summer, and proper boots for winter. I can't wear wellingtons as I get aching feet very quickly.

GreyHare · 09/09/2018 21:55

Oh and joules wellies look pretty but they are shit and fall apart easily and on mine the gloss coating peeled off in random patches and my feet were always frozen in the cold in them.

MrsMotherHen · 09/09/2018 21:55

Ethylred why is this a bizarre thread??

the opening post "reconsiderations" was quite clearly an auto correct from recommendations

I second country boots. I’ve got a pair of Dubarrys. They’re pricey but they last years and are so worth it. They’re like slippers, they’re so comfy. They’re pull on rather then zip up, I found that when I put a bit of weight on the bloody zips were hard to pull up! Very warm and waterproof.

Harrypotterfan1604 · 09/09/2018 22:07

I got some joules wellies for Christmas last year and honestly they’re the most uncomfortable shoes I own! I’ve walked for an hour and half in them late afternoon today and my feet are killing me 😫 I do have some decent walking boots somewhere from sports direct but couldn’t find them today. My dogs like to go in rivers and can’t come off the lead so a decent pair of wellies is a must for me otherwise of staying away from water some waterproof walking boots

Juststopit · 09/09/2018 22:10

Muck boots here. Stretchy neoprene fit my huge legs, really comfy on the feet and hose down to look like new. Got some funky new ones in the sale tonight, £25 , Bargain!

Betarocker · 09/09/2018 22:32

I wear wellies most of the year. Fed up of paying for expensive brand wellies that leak after a few months I went down to b&q for my last pair and they've done me nearly 18 months for £8. Taught me not to be swayed by big names.

Thunderpunt · 10/09/2018 07:09

Thanks @IheartCaptainHolt I think I'll take a look at some of those

Squirrel26 · 10/09/2018 07:49

I did have a pair of Ariats (can’t remember which ones), for dog walking and riding. They didn’t last long before I put my heel through the lining, and eventually they were unwearable and I had to throw them out. Has anyone else had that or was I just unlucky?

LittleBookofCalm · 10/09/2018 07:54

i dont like wellies, they are cold and uncomfortable, but occasionally necessary , walking boots have grip and are better.

in reality op you probably need both, depending on where you are going and when

RiverTam · 10/09/2018 07:55

For walking in the countryside I always wear walking boots, abd still have the same pair I bought 13 years ago to wear in Oz and NZ. They're gore tex as well.

Wellies are cold and uncomfortable.

Isentthesignal · 10/09/2018 07:56

If I was to only buy one type of shoe, it would be good quality wellies - I have a pair of Aigle Parcours, they are easy to hose down, warm and relatively easy to walk in - I still look forward to days that it's dry enough not to have to wear them.

Isentthesignal · 10/09/2018 07:58

If you are wearing walking boots you really should maintain them by removing mud and waxing - even the gortex ones need proper looking after.

HPLikecraft · 10/09/2018 08:00

I walk a big dog every day in the country.
I have a pair of army combat boots. I need the support they give for my bad foot, but also they're leather and goretex, and water, oil and bomb-proof!
£30 on eBay.
Not dainty or stylish though.

To ask what do you wear to walk the dog (or just out walking) wellies or walking boots?
CantankerousCamel · 10/09/2018 08:01

Timberland leather ankle boots

They are fully waterproof and super comfy

LakieLady · 10/09/2018 08:06

I have narrow feet, with a high instep, and I wear these www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/p/merrell-womens-siren-sport-gtx-xcr-shoe-B2222091.html?channable=e49077.MzMzNzlfMTIz&colour=123&gclid=CjwKCAjwrNjcBRA3EiwAIIOvq7V5Zg1IB1ew1LBLD9tFojzgTOeIjX7xLS_n0OHUwqezMgUuZgB-IRoC-NgQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Still waterproof after 5 years, and a bargain at that price.

I've never had wellies that are comfortable for anything longer than a short stroll. I find they rub and my feet get cold in them, even with thick, fleecy socks.

If it's really wet, I wear waterproof overtrousers, so the bottom of my trousers stay dry.

agedknees · 10/09/2018 08:08

I have ankle welly boots (joules). Wear a thick pair of socks with them. I have no problems with them. My feet stay nice and dry on very wet dog walks.

LittleBookofCalm · 10/09/2018 08:19

I like the look of those muck boots, they have velcro Grin

exexpat · 10/09/2018 08:22

I only wear wellies if I know I am going to be going through long wet grass or liquid mud, otherwise I have one pair of lightweight walking boots for summer, and a pair of much more waterproof, thermal-insulated walking boots for winter, which keep my feet really warm and dry. Wellies are just not comfortable for long walks.

Buswankeress · 10/09/2018 09:14

I wear walking boots to walk dogs/ do horses and a pair of golf waterproof trousers with the bottoms fastened and stay pretty much dry. If the field gate is armpit deep with mud from the horses then I will change into wellies - hunters are my current pair, but although expensive they're not great for support or warmth. The golf waterproof trousers are the best I've found, except motorcycle over trousers - both are much better and warmer, and don't make you sweat inside like the horsey or walking ones I've had, lasted longer and we're cheaper!

Buswankeress · 10/09/2018 09:15

*were cheaper. Stupid autocorrect.

Jeanclaudejackety · 10/09/2018 09:21

I hate wellies and find them hard to walk in. I wear either a pair of Dublin boots which are knee length and like a Dubarrys but cheaper (Google them) or in dryer weather a pair of Karrimor walking trainers they were 15 quid in sports direct and are absolutely fab so comfy and you can chuck them in the washing machine. I do have a pair of decent North face walking boots also.

Jeanclaudejackety · 10/09/2018 09:22

Also in the past have had a pair of 10 quid muck boots from a cheapy horse equipment shop and they were bloody amazing
