...or is 'No woman over 40 should have hair past her shoulders' utter bollocks?

It's something a friend of mine says a lot. She's in her fifties and lucky enough to suit short hair, is always badgering me (50) and another friend who's in her 40s to wear ours shorter, which I just ignore because I like my hair long and don't believe age should dictate how people wear their hair.

Just curious, though, as to whether anyone still buys into this idea that women should wear their hair shorter simply because they're approaching, or have reached, middle age? And if so... why???

Absolute bollocks. I don't have a massive amount of hair, but I love the hair that I have ... and it's long ...

AFistfulofDolores1 · 09/09/2018 22:47

I'm 47.

GeezAJammyPeece · 09/09/2018 22:47

Your friend would be Shock at mine then ...
It's down to the back of my 42year old knees Wink

crazydoglady6867 · 09/09/2018 22:48

I really want my hair short now I am in my fifties but my DH loves my long hair and would be sad if I had it cut off, but I think a woman my age looks better with short hair.

MenaMecca · 09/09/2018 22:50

My mom's 62 and her hair is down to her lower back. It suits her.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 09/09/2018 22:50

Am I the only one who finds the current obsession with long hair a bit depressing. Long hair seems to be the only style in town. So samey.

Nope. Me too, as per my comment upthread

Washedwithrain · 09/09/2018 22:53

I dislike short hair on older ladies, it’s not flattering.

I dislike ridiculous generalisations. Do 'older ladies' all look the same or something?

Eliza9917 · 09/09/2018 22:54

I'm 27 and have very long blonde hair, I always get compliments but as I'm almost 30 I feel like I should have it cut shorter, I do love it long but never see anyone older than 30 with really long hair so I'd be interested to see what people think too!

That's nonsense, I'm 37 and mine is probably to or just below my bra strap. Same for the friends I was at school with. Most have hair past their shoulders.

Ihateclowns457 · 09/09/2018 22:55

Tell them to fuck off. I’m 47, my hair is dark but greying (although I dye it) and it’s waist length. I’m blessed with thick hair although it’s thinner now than when I was younger and I have absolutely no plans to cut it at all. I like my hair long and it’s staying long x

cherish123 · 09/09/2018 23:00

Depends on your hair. One poster is right about hair thinning as you get older so, for some, it may be better to wear it short. Others suit it long, regardless of age.

Fartootiredtobeawake · 09/09/2018 23:05

I’m 46; with Bum length dark hair. Just starting to see some grey. It is still thick and not thinning at all. I’m planning to have long luscious grey locks. And why shouldn’t I?
I don’t care if people don’t think it age appropriate, none of their business how I want to look.

CSIblonde · 09/09/2018 23:06

I'm 50 & hair (Lob) just below collarbone. It was thinning but I got some Biotin on friends advice & 2months in its noticeably thicker. (I did 2 a day tho bottle says 1). Stopping blow drying in the hot weather also massively helped re shine & dry bits.

MidniteScribbler · 09/09/2018 23:15

I'm 40 with waist length hair, currently bright red. I have no plans on cutting it (other than a trim). I look awful with short hair, and the shorter it is, the curlier it gets. I've got a round face, and bobs and fringes don't suit me at all. I'm getting fed up with the grey regrowth though, so I'm thinking of going silver soon. It's my hair, and I'll damn well do whatever I want with it.

Redboxonwheels · 09/09/2018 23:18

My mum is early 60s and has lovely just below shoulder length straight hair.

It really suits her, so this supposed age thing is bollocks.

She is lucky that it grows really fast and she is just coming up to making her third hair donation to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that makes real hair wigs for children suffering from cancer and other illnesses. (You need to supply a min of 7 inches per donation).

No one has ever implied she’s too old for long hair. Why would they?

sanssherif · 09/09/2018 23:21

Long hair makes older women look younger if in good condition.

PickAChew · 09/09/2018 23:23

I've had really short short hair most of my adult life. Having reached my very late forties, I've developed jowls and the short short hair doesn't suit me any more. So, I'm currently growing it. It's natural colour - very dark and very fairand the only dye that would suit me is so cool toned that it might as well be my natural dark with silver highlights.

And, rather than the thick, coarse not straight frizz it used to be, it's actually soft and quite curly!

Had these pictures in recent marketing emails.

Aspenfrost · 09/09/2018 23:23

If the hair is long and grey and in a girlish style like Mary Beard’s, it does look incongruous. She has it dyed a sort of grey blonde now and it still looks wrong. It must be due to the length rather than the dye or lack of it.

Mummaloves · 09/09/2018 23:24

I'm 44 and have my hair long - to my bra strap length. It's thick and shiny chestnut coloured and I regularly get components on my hair, so I intend to keep it long !

Mummaloves · 09/09/2018 23:25

*compliments - bloody auto correct !

MervynBunter · 09/09/2018 23:25

It's all subjective of course. Have it long by all means but wear it up. There are very few women over 40 who long hair suits IMO.

AnnabelleLecter · 09/09/2018 23:25

Of course it's utter bollocks.
I'm 50 with long thick hair in good condition.
DH 53 said I looked hot as fuck today, which can't possibly be true given my age.
Saying ludicrous things like that obviously means he's going senile or new glasses.
Or not.

seventhgonickname · 09/09/2018 23:27

I had shirt hair when younger but have grown it in my fifties. It is still reasonably thick and I wear it twisted up.You have to have a less saggy face than mine to suit short hair.
I have just left the colour to sort it's self out as I cannot stand the gray parting of regrowth on coloured hair.

goose1964 · 09/09/2018 23:28

I'm mid 50s and have bra strap length hair, it's still really thick though

nocoolnamesleft · 09/09/2018 23:29

I was wondering about getting my hair cut. Having heard that I must, that's decided it: I definitely won't.
