...or is 'No woman over 40 should have hair past her shoulders' utter bollocks?

It's something a friend of mine says a lot. She's in her fifties and lucky enough to suit short hair, is always badgering me (50) and another friend who's in her 40s to wear ours shorter, which I just ignore because I like my hair long and don't believe age should dictate how people wear their hair.

Just curious, though, as to whether anyone still buys into this idea that women should wear their hair shorter simply because they're approaching, or have reached, middle age? And if so... why???

I'm well over 40 and my hair is blue, and halfway down my back. Don't care what anyone else thinks, I like it.

treaclesoda · 09/09/2018 19:37

My hair is by far and away my best feature. It's all thick and healthy and when it's blow dried it's as shiney as anything, and I have no grey hairs. There is no way I'm cutting it shorter just because I'm in my 40s.

I'd hazard a guess that a certain type of man hates it though, because from behind I look twenty years younger than I do from the front, and that makes people angry Confused

elena7475 · 09/09/2018 19:37

I am 42 and I always had very long hair. I can even imagine to cut them.
My grand grandma who I look like had long hair too until she died in her 90s
I get so many compliments about my hair that I can't even think to cut them

Vitalogy · 09/09/2018 19:37

I just don't get it either. I've had a few comments over the years. Even when a teenager actually Confused

I still dye my hair atm but fulling intend to have long grey hair down to my arse when I'm 90! So there!

SequinsOnEverything · 09/09/2018 19:38

I can't imagine ever having short hair, however old I am. I just don't think it would suit me. I do sometimes wonder why I see so few older ladies with longish hair, it seems many reach their 40s and chop it all off. I hope the need to do this doesn't ever strike me!!

Stripyhoglets1 · 09/09/2018 19:38

Its rubbish. If you want short hair then it's all good but if you don't then why would you!

NewtScamandersNaughtyNiffler · 09/09/2018 19:38

I work in a care home. One of my residents is in her 90s and has the most beautiful long grey hair. We brush and plait it every day and I'm totally jealous!

GuyGarveysWife · 09/09/2018 19:39

I hope no one does cut their hair just because they feel they should! I’m only 25, but some women I know have beautiful hair well into their 50’s and 60’s- I even know one 77 year old with hair longer and more luxurious than mine(that’s not hard to be fair but it’s beaui hair), I don’t plan on cutting mine short until it’s so thin it looks awful, because I had short hair when I was younger and it didn’t suit me at all.

butterflysugarbaby · 09/09/2018 19:40

Yeah I agree ... Any woman over 40 MUST look like this.

If she doesn't, she is mutton dressed as lamb! Hmm

Short hair, no boobicles on show, legs covered, and so sign of your cheeky lady booty! Make sure you wear big baggy sacks.

Don't want you thinking you could POSSIBLY be attractive, sexy, or pretty at such an age as 40! Wink

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm · 09/09/2018 19:40

Well, it depends on your hairstyle obviously. One of the ladies in my office is late 50s and wears her grey hair all long and straggly (like a witch). It doesn’t do her any favours at all, and ages her terribly. I don’t think she’s bothered tbh which is fair enough. I think if she got It cut professionally it would look a lot healthier. No need to colour it if she likes the au natural look. Another woman in her mid 60s has her long hair cut/styled regularly with blonde highlights. She looks fabulous! In fact she could pass for mid-40s.

starsandstuff · 09/09/2018 19:41

I'm 42 and mine is long and grey. When I got it cut a lot shorter to get rid of the colour, and then said I was growing it long again, I was told not to by my boss because I'd look "witchy". Hmm People are CFs and women should do exactly what they bloody want with their hair. It's 2018 FFS.

I mean look how hideous and ludicrous THIS lot look here!

Awful all of them! Hmm

Over 45 and long hair! Disgraceful!!!

I am joking (obvs!)

Treacletoots · 09/09/2018 19:42

On the whole I agree with most people that it's bollocks. Although a lady I work with is almost 60 and has super long dyed hair and wears it in a style that to be brutally honest would look better on her daughter.

I think personally length isn't an issue but I get annoyed when people are expected to colour greys. I'm only just starting to go grey, at 40 and actually finding I don't mind. I'm hoping it hurries up so I can dye it a funky colour more easily ;)

EdWinchester · 09/09/2018 19:42

It's a silly throwback to the 1950s.

I am nearly 48 and have long hair. I have loose curls and it looks bloody hideous short.

PolkerrisBeach · 09/09/2018 19:43

Is your friend my mother? I have shoulder length hair and ever since I turned 30 she's been going on about how I need to have it cut.

She's weird.

SilverApples · 09/09/2018 19:44

I’ve got waist length hair, silver shading to black ( not dyed) and I’m late 50s.
I like my hair, and the only critical comments I’ve ever had about style, length, makeup, clothing and other girly stuff has been from women. All my bloody life. I found it tedious rather than shatteringly critical, but I would like to have the power to silence them for an hour every time they come out with crap like that. Along with men who catcall.
Similar problem IMO

LeftRightCentre · 09/09/2018 19:45

Tell her to lay off and that you'll do as you please with your hair the same way she does and you're sick of her carping on about your hair. I look awful with short hair. I also hate seeing hairdressers. Long hair works for me.

Vitalogy · 09/09/2018 19:46

Your hair is gorgeous starsandstuff Another nail in my hair dying coffin me thinks.

Does your hair have a natural wave?

Beamur · 09/09/2018 19:46

It's nonsense.
I'm in my 40's and 'cursed' with ridiculously thick hair. Wear your hair however you like. Sod what anyone else thinks.

theSnuffster · 09/09/2018 19:48

I'm 30 and have had long-ish hair for most of my life really, and can't imagine ever cutting it short. It's stupidly thick (I can't tie it up once it gets to a certain length as the weight gives me headaches) so even if it thins as I age it may not ever actually get 'thin'. Hoping I'll be grateful for its thickness one day!

Jeippinghmip · 09/09/2018 19:48

I dislike short hair on older ladies, it’s not flattering.

SilverApples · 09/09/2018 19:49

Magic finger silence. Point and ZAP! Voice gone. Or mouth.
