Paying people cash in hand

stretchmarkqueenie · 08/09/2018 18:34

I've been told by the lady I use to do my ironing that she would now like cash payment rather than the usual bank transfer. It's making me feel uneasy, and personal preference I know, I don't like carrying cash on me. Just wondered others views on paying people cash in hand?

OP posts:

And why the need for a bloody reciept? Really? Who T F keeps reciepts for stuff like ironing??

JacquesHammer · 09/09/2018 16:41

And why the need for a bloody reciept?

To prove you’ve paid surely. I mean isn’t that the whole point of a receipt?!

sanssherif · 09/09/2018 16:44

Why would you need proof? To show whom? Its not like taking a top back to tesco is it!

JacquesHammer · 09/09/2018 16:46

Why would you need proof? To show whom?

I had a window cleaner who swore blind I hadn’t paid for 6 months. Fortunately because I’d taken receipts every time I was able to prove it. Turned out he was trying this on every customer.

Now I do everything online only because it gives me a record of every transaction, removing the clearly onerous task of someone providing a receipt.

(And it’s really not onerous, I generate receipts for some of my clients who want them. It takes seconds)

I haven't read the whole post but if i randomly got this request i would wonder if she was trying to nest egg her money away from dh for her own personal reasons and would pay her in cash

FlipnTwist · 09/09/2018 16:54

I think she has been caguht out with people saying they'll make a bank transfer and then not doing so.She probably prefers cash on the day and then she knows she's got it

penisbeakers · 09/09/2018 17:06

@stopfuckingshoutingatme WELL BLOODY SAID.

Iizzyb · 09/09/2018 17:17

My Cleaner's business only do cash now. Used to take bank transfers but the bookkeeper took a lot longer to reconcile all the bank payments so was going to charge more so they said they would prefer to stick to cash only and not increase prices. It is more work than a standing order for me but it's hardly the end of the world.

If you get paid monthly draw all the cash out in one go and put it in envelopes ready. I get cash once a week then I have enough for babysitter, cleaner and when the gardener comes once a fortnight.

If you really think you haven't time to go to a cashpoint once a month you need to have a bit of a rethink/reorganise tbh.

As to whether she is declaring her earnings, isn't that her business rather than yours?

I don't go to the nail bars that are staffed with Chinese girls who speak no English because I'm personally not comfortable with the idea that many of these businesses are not complying with UK employment laws etc but a self employed ironing service doesn't sound anything like that. Up to you obviously though.

Exactly what I thought and posted as well!!

PattiStanger · 09/09/2018 19:26

How would squirelling away cash work?

Unless the DH was unaware of the ironing job it doesn't matter if she's paid in cash or in the bank, he knows she's earning the money. If there was a controlling DH at home the sudden stopping of money into the bank account would be a bit of a clue something was going on and if he's not looking at her bank statements it doesn't matter how she gets paid.

I'm thinking she probably doesn't have much scope for saving any of her earnings anyway.

ruddynorah · 09/09/2018 19:35

I hope the OP is as concerned about tax dodging multinational corporations who diddle the UK out of millions in tax revenue as she is of Susan doing her ironing for her.

Bluelady · 09/09/2018 19:41

If I was getting paid for doing ironing, my husband would have no idea how much I was doing or how much I was being paid.

InertPotato · 09/09/2018 19:48

Am I the only person who's totally fine with people getting a bit of cash in hand that the Inland Revenue can't get its paws on?

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 09/09/2018 20:02

I don’t mind either!

I don’t see them as benefit cheats

But I wouldn’t be suprised if some people do some cleaning and get some tax credits in parallel . It am not casting aspersions here just being pragmatic

There are very few ways to top up a paltry income frankly and cleaning can make someone a top up

cantkeepawayforever · 09/09/2018 20:03

Inert, as someone who is paid from the public purse - teacher in an increasingly cash-strapped state education sector - I do have a vested interest in people paying tax.....

On the 'e-mail vs paper invoice' thing - I don't care which I get. Both are fine, someone who has an unhesitating answer about their normal and preferred process is fine. Some one who blinks and shuffles a bit obviously doesn't really have a process, or expect to issue proper invoices, and I'd take that into account when deciding whether they were somebody i wanted to do work for me (subcontracting for a minor piece of work from a really reliable main contractor with whom i have an established relationship - maybe. As a supplier of something large or critical or ever needing servicing / repair - no)

PersianCatLady · 09/09/2018 20:06

Unless the DH was unaware of the ironing job
All the ironing lady has to say to her DH is Mrs X doesn't want her ironing done any more.

Or ironing lady's husband could be a raging drunk who has access to her bank card.

Honestly, why should ironing lady have to justify why she wants to be paid in cash??

PersianCatLady · 09/09/2018 20:07

Exactly.

PersianCatLady · 09/09/2018 20:13

My cleaning lady and friend probably could have got away with claiming full benefits and doing cleaning on the side without declaring it.

She wanted to declare it all to HMRC for tax credits and the hoops she had to jump through to show how her cleaning business works was ridiculous.

We muddled through it together but she doesn't get much more than she would on full benefits but she is showing her DD a work ethic.

If she is not paid on time, it can cause her so many problems so her bigger (more £) clients pay by SO so this doesn't happen.

TeacupDrama · 09/09/2018 20:25

loads of small shops like newsagents have signs up saying no card payments under £5 because they bank charges are so high, if you are working on a 10% margin or less and a card payment for £5 costs you 45p ( the same bank probably only charges tesco 2p for a £5 transaction due to volume) it removes all your profit the fees for paying in and taking out small amounts are huge for small business
if you pay £10 an hour to her and her bank charges her 45p that is effectively a pay cut of 5% which on a low wage is huge so 10 X £10 each with 45p charge adds up most of us would not be happy with bank taking 4.5% of our wages just for moving the money around

NC4Now · 09/09/2018 20:30

She may be overdrawn and the money gets swallowed up before she can get it out of her bank.
Or she may just need cash.
