Paying people cash in hand

stretchmarkqueenie · 08/09/2018 18:34

I've been told by the lady I use to do my ironing that she would now like cash payment rather than the usual bank transfer. It's making me feel uneasy, and personal preference I know, I don't like carrying cash on me. Just wondered others views on paying people cash in hand?

OP posts:

Well that not true either Nike. Plenty of rich people aren’t paying the legal amount of tax they should. People from all walks of life evade tax Hmm

I'm not saying there aren't rich people who EVADE tax, of course there are. I'm saying that you can't call someone who is paying the LEGAL amount a tax evader just because YOU think they should be paying more. It's the difference between tax EVASION (illegal) and tax AVOIDANCE (legal) which people don't seem to understand or wilfully ignore when they're slagging off Amazon and co.

glintandglide · 09/09/2018 09:47

Well I stand my my previous post but yes, fundamentally that is right. Often people who haven’t studied accounting wouldn’t know that though, so I wouldn’t get so stroppy with them.

HannahHut · 09/09/2018 09:48

I wouldn't mind but I'd want a receipt from her as I would have no other way to prove the payment was made.

pigeondujour · 09/09/2018 09:49

The vast majority of people understand the avoidance/evasion thing, it's just that "Don't complain when someone legally minimises their tax bill" is such a ridiculous conclusion to reach from that.

sanssherif · 09/09/2018 09:51

Ffs how hard is it to get cash out?

glintandglide · 09/09/2018 09:52

I agree pigeondujour

PolkerrisBeach · 09/09/2018 09:52

There are lots of reasons why the ironing person wants cash. None of that is the OP's business.

Ironing lady is self-employed and decides how she wants to work. OP can either agree to that, or choose not to use the ironing lady any more.

It is not a big deal.

LadyPenelope68 · 09/09/2018 09:54

Maybe she gets charged for each transaction that goes into her business account (my husband does), or she’s just fed up of people saying they’ll do the transfer then not doing it for a few days (again a real big bear for my husband).

JacquesHammer · 09/09/2018 09:55

Well the OP says she doesn’t live near a cash machine.

I’d simply find someone else to do my ironing OP. The whole point of employing someone to do your ironing is to lighten the load, not make more work for you.

pigeondujour · 09/09/2018 09:56

Depends where you live and what your schedule is like, obviously. Most people could plan ahead to have cash on them, yeah, but if I was paying someone to do my ironing I'd want it to be taking a task off my list, not just replacing it with a different one.

SunnyInGrimsby · 09/09/2018 09:58

I've always paid my cleaners cash. TBH, they earn so little for a hard job I don't begrudge it at all.

And i couldn't care less if they don't declare it - perhaps a little more energy needs to be spent on huge tax avoiders like Google and amazon rather than guilting those scraping by at the bottom.

If it's a drag remembering to draw out cash, just keep a small stash in a safe place. I'd find doing a bank transfer every week far more of a fag.

Bluelady · 09/09/2018 10:02

Not replacing one task that takes a couple of hours with one that takes a couple of minutes? Yeah, OK.

Bluecloudyskies · 09/09/2018 10:03

It’s just splitting hairs nike. Managing to find loop holes to avoid paying higher tax is still squeezing out of paying a fair share. LEGAL or not.

Marie0 · 09/09/2018 10:04

I’m not sure if this is about potential tax evasion or the inconvenience of having cash - but either way REALLY??? I operate a cash business and everything is above board (I have an accountant) - if my clients couldn’t be bothered to go to the cash point I’d tell them to find someone else to provide the service I do - I can’t believe some people have an issue with this!!

glintandglide · 09/09/2018 10:04

“And i couldn't care less if they don't declare it - perhaps a little more energy needs to be spent on huge tax avoiders like Google and amazon rather than guilting those scraping by at the bottoM”

As I said in a PP HMRC don’t have the skills, confidence or to be fair, backing to do. It’s easy for them to terrify the little man because they are too intimidated by the big players

JacquesHammer · 09/09/2018 10:05

It takes a couple of minutes if you happen to be near a cash machine. Substantially more if it requires a special trip.

Bluelady · 09/09/2018 10:07

Every supermarket has cash points. It's really not difficult. Even if it was, why would the cleaner find it any easier? There's no excuse.

I go to a small Aldi. No cashpoint.

And it’s not really my issue what the cleaner does with the money once I’ve paid it.

JacquesHammer · 09/09/2018 10:11

Although to be fair it’s a moot point as I do my own cleaning Grin

I’ve never paid anyone cash for anything though!

Bluelady · 09/09/2018 10:12

Some people's level of entitlement never ceases to amaze me. Never. It's just another example of how privileged women increase that privilege at the expense of other women further down the food chain. Fuck the other woman's convenience as long as my life is as easy as possible.

PolkerrisBeach · 09/09/2018 10:13

There's no excuse.

She doesn't NEED an excuse!! She is a self-employed person who sets her own terms and conditions. She is saying that if you want her services, you pay cash. She would be within her rights to demand her payment all in £5 notes, or in a pink scented envelope, or delivered with a song. As a client, it's up to you whether you choose to accept those terms.

Bluelady · 09/09/2018 10:19

That's exactly what I was saying, Polkern!

JacquesHammer · 09/09/2018 10:23

@Bluelady

Don’t be ridiculous. If you’re paying for a service you’re paying for a particular activity. It’s not entitled to want to pay in a way that doesn’t cause you more work.

Im not saying force the cleaner to accept bank payments. I’m saying I wouldn’t pay cash and therefore would choose another cleaner who would accept a bank transfer/online payment. No big deal to either party.

Clionba · 09/09/2018 10:24

Bluelady quite. Who are these people that never have the opportunity to go to a cashpoint in the course of their working/social week??
