asking to borrow - cheeky fuckery?

We are getting our kitchen replaced in a couple of months. It's a big job, involves knocking a wall down and it will be at least 2 weeks without full use of a kitchen.

We have a microwave and can plug fridge and freezer in elsewhere in the house. I won't have use of anything else apart from a toaster and a kettle though. Was planning on asking on Facebook whether anyone could lend us any cooking equipment like a george foreman grill, a plug in hob, toastie maker etc etc etc.

DH thinks this is cheeky fuckery and we should just buy stuff. My point is that it's wasteful to buy stuff for using over a very short period only and that we're usually more than happy to lend heaters when someone's boiler breaks down.

I agree, it’s sensible not cheeky. We had this a few years ago plus no heating. I asked around and got lots of offers of stand alone heaters that people weren’t using.

One of the best gadgets for cooking was a steamer that doubled up as a big electric frying pan. We also borrowed a big camping stove from a friend.

underoverunder · 05/09/2018 10:59

I don't think that is cheeky at all. I have asked to borrow electric heaters from friends in this way when our boiler was waiting to be fixed.

PolkerrisBeach · 05/09/2018 10:59

I do like the idea of an official kitchen opening with me in a Queen mask. Grin

We did similar last year. I found a George Foreman grill at a car boot for £5. Also a sandwich toaster. We ate out quite a bit too and got a take away a couple of times.

We bloody glad when we got the kitchen back though. Ours was just over 2 weeks.

Loonoon · 05/09/2018 11:06

We had similar when having the kitchen redone by my dear FIL some years ago. He and his labourer took the old kitchen out one week leaving us with a sink propped up on a trestle and a dishwasher. We had a spare fridge/freezer in an outhouse. The new kitchen was delivered in boxes and fitting was due to start on Monday.

dear FILs mum was taken seriously ill overseas that weekend so FIL had to fly out to her for a few days. He then had to fly back to sort out a care home and almost immediately after that she died so back again to sort out funeral and selling the old home.

In all we lived with that situation and 3 young children for about 2 months. We ate a lot of pizza and visited the Harvester a lot! But the best thing we bought was a two ring induction hob and we already had a ££30 halogen oven from Costco. With those, the microwave and a bit of practice I learned to knock up a roast dinner for 6.

If I saw it posted, I'd assume you were smart and careful, not a cf!

loubluee · 05/09/2018 11:10

I don’t think it’s cheeky I think it’s saving the environment! By the way if you are near me I have a brand new George foreman still in the box if you want to borrow it!

loubluee · 05/09/2018 11:11

Oh just seen you are in Glasgow- but too far!

ToadOfSadness · 05/09/2018 11:20

I have a toastie maker to give away if you are near me, nothing to lend though as I use what I have due to not having a working oven.

ToadOfSadness · 05/09/2018 11:21

Ahh, you are not near me.

viques · 05/09/2018 11:22

OP that's not CF borrowing.

CF borrowing is what happened to a friend of a friend. Their neighbour called round just before Christmas one year and asked what time they were planning on eating their Christmas lunch . When asked why the neighbour admitted they were hoping to borrow fof's dining table and chairs for their own meal !

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 05/09/2018 11:23

Have a look on Freecycle to see if there are slowcookers etc on offer, then re freecycle it when you've done.

Get one of those suitcase camping stoves. They are really good. My sister used a larger on for about 6 months after her insurance company wouldn't pay out for a broken cooker.

eggsandwich · 05/09/2018 11:23

Ask away whats the worst that can happen.

PenelopeFlintstone · 05/09/2018 11:27

Not cheeky, and a cake or some biscuits made by you in your new kitchen would be enough to say thanks, I think.
I wouldn't want you to buy anything for me when small appliances are quite cheap nowadays and it would feel disproportionate.

TheClitterati · 05/09/2018 11:32

YABNU or cheeky.
Borrowing for the short term is a great idea. Ask your H to think of the planet!!

AltheaorDonna · 05/09/2018 11:40

I would be happy lending my slow cooker, toastie machine etc, everything apart from my air fryer and Thermomix really. I can’t live without them. In fact if you can’t borrow one, I highly recommend buying an Airfryer anyway in your situation.

Agentornika · 05/09/2018 11:44

We used our gas BBQ for pretty much everything when we couldn't use our kitchen, it's one of those with the side burners too so came in very useful

Peaspleaselouise · 05/09/2018 11:45

We did exactly the same and people were very forthcoming. Hot plate was especially useful.

noenergy · 05/09/2018 11:54

Another idea is a camping stove, only £10 in Halfords. Great for cooking. I have one because I hate my electric cooker and landlord would not let us change it to gas.

fifig87 · 05/09/2018 12:08

That's not being a c.f. I'd happily loan mine, they are only used every now and again. My oven wouldn't heat the other day as I was making dinner and baking. Used the neighbours oven(they got cake in exhange). Isn't that what good neighbours and friends are for?
A steamer would be another good option for you, you can do veg, fish etc in it!
If your not going to have access to a dishwasher/sink properly I'd buy a load of paper plates, cutlery etc to keep washing to a minimum

SendYouUpInFlames · 05/09/2018 12:12

Yes all you need is a halogen cooker. They're eletric and work great. Mine has 2 tiers so you can put food on top and underneath.
Has a timer and you can change heat from 110° to 280°

If you're close to wakefield i will lend you mine.

PurpleTigerLove · 05/09/2018 12:17

It’s fine .

clarrylove · 05/09/2018 16:47

Of course, it is fine. I would probably go one step further and ask people to let me know when I can come round for dinner so I could draw up a rota! 😂

overnightangel · 05/09/2018 16:51

Try freecycle then give to charity shop afterwards???
