To think that Quorn doesn’t agree with me

DD asked if we could eat more vegetarian meals. This was fine with me and I’ve happily been buying and testing lots of new stuff. I’ve been fine with everything except Quorn mince. Both times I’ve used it to make a bolognese I’ve felt incredibly sick afterwards. Nobody else is ill so I don’t think it’s my cooking!
Does Quorn affect anyone else like this? I feel so ill, I want to cry Sad

Yeah, same here. Shame, as it’s cheap and low cal. Stomach cramps and diarrhoea. Probably had it three - four times (didn’t really work out the correlation) and last time I came out in hives as well. I’d completely avoid it if I were you, OP, as the reaction can get worse each time you have it.

Notquiteagandt · 04/09/2018 21:08

Same only ever ate it twice. Didnt make conection 1st time. Worse stomach cramps ive ever had. Wiped me out with a day spent on loo nursing a bucket. Sad

CloudCaptain · 04/09/2018 21:17

Yep both me and dh had stomach cramps and diarrhoea the one time we tried it. (We were sucked in by Mo Farrah)

Ilovehamabeads · 04/09/2018 21:19

The warning just says that in rare cases there have been allergic reactions to mycoprotein and that the high protein and fibre content can cause intolerance in some people. That’s not word for word, I haven’t fished it out the bin again!
I wonder why the other Quorn things like ‘chicken’ nuggets and sausages haven’t made me ill.
Not sure what TVP is but I’ll look out for it and try that instead. Thanks Smile

Quorn - last time I had it it looked like I’d swallowed a balloon, and I farted vile stinks for 10 hours solidly. I’ll never eat that bloody fungus again.

Needahairbrush · 04/09/2018 21:27

O yes, then it turned into the shits the next day. Urgh.

Albatross26 · 04/09/2018 21:30

It's made from a mould growing in the ground. I have an allergy to it - I accidentally ate a piece around the size of a 5p recently and was violently sick for around five hours, shaking, sweating, felt like I was going to die! Hideous stuff.

EyUpOurKid · 04/09/2018 21:40

Exactly the same reaction as Needahairbrush had. I actually made DH retch. Twas like the stench of a thousand rotten nappies left out in a warm day.

susurration · 04/09/2018 21:42

Yep, it gives me what can only be likened to gastroenteritis. Makes me very poorly.

Hoppinggreen · 04/09/2018 21:45

My dd gets a tingly mouth and a tight throat from eating Quorn.
She is ok with Tofu though
She is mainly veggie but not eating Quorn can make it harder

maddening · 04/09/2018 21:46

I am veggie and totally allergic to quorn, this coupled with my ibs make dining anywhere so fun 😤😣😒

Rebecca36 · 04/09/2018 21:48

Quorn gives me diarrhoea so I don't use it any more.

PerditaNitt · 04/09/2018 21:49

My digestive system doesn’t tolerate it when pregnant (made me windy and gave me cramps) and it definitely affected my baby when i has it when breastfeeding (again, windiness and bloating), but I’m fine the rest of the time. Soya pieces from Holland and Barrett (the ones you rehydrate before using) are a good alternative and suited me better.

walkalongsmiling · 04/09/2018 21:51

Yes I know of a few people that have this with quorn. We use green lentils for chilli etc.

babbscrabbs · 04/09/2018 21:51

Yes havent eaten it for almost 20 years, awful stuff.

Best to use less processed stuff like lentils and nuts.

Scientistic · 04/09/2018 21:52

Violent reaction here (next morning usually)

Ds says it makes his throat hurt and tingle.

Airaforce · 04/09/2018 21:58

I get diarrhoea if I eat too much quorn. Try the Cauldron range of vegetarian meals, they use vegetables and pulses rather than soya/mushroom based protein.

Foslady · 04/09/2018 21:58

Another one who is violently ill after eating it - never again!

SaucyJack · 04/09/2018 22:01

Have a Google of the manufacturing process, and you’ll probably be happy to avoid it.

It isn’t food. Strange stuff indeed.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 04/09/2018 22:03

Honestly you can make such lovely veggie dishes without ever needing to use the vile stuff that is quorn.

SaucyJack · 04/09/2018 22:03

PS: if you can get to a Chinese supermarket, you can buy something called wheat/gluten meat in tins which is a much nicer meat substitute.

Lemoncurd · 04/09/2018 22:03

Interesting to read this as we've had quorn and other meat alternative products a few times recently and my mouth and throat have felt odd afterwards and I've had a burning, indigestion type feeling.

Might stick to lentils!

InspectorIkmen · 04/09/2018 22:04

Makes me fart like a bison

Grin Grin Grin

I love this!

Littlepond · 04/09/2018 22:04

Quorn gives me the shits. Every time.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 04/09/2018 22:04

Well it’s processed mould which probably isn’t the best option for health
