To burn the entire house down? Threadworms and TMI

LifesTooShortForMatchingSocks · 04/09/2018 17:51

Honestly not sure how as I have health related OCD and permanently wash bedding, never use a towel twice and the house is permanently cleaned but we keep getting bloody threadworms Angry
Ds is a nailbiting nose picker (he's 5) so I'm blaming him Grin
How on earth am I going to get rid of them? This must be at least the third time this year! Has anyone successfully gotten rid for good?

I managed to get rid of them, and as far as I'm aware they didn't spread past DC. Over, Washed bedding everyday, hoovered everyday, washed DC bum and nails in the morning, constantly wiping (inc light switches, door handles). Pants and pajamas to bed. They gave me the creeps! Could it be going around DC school or nursery or friends? Sounds like you're getting rid of it and then possibly picking it up again?

Lavalamped · 04/09/2018 17:54

Ovex I meant, not over!

BifsWif · 04/09/2018 17:56

My DD has them earlier this year. Treated with Ovex and cleaned the whole house. Boil washed all bedding and towels, steamed mattresses and pillows. Disinfected skirting boards, door handles, light switches. Steamed and hoovered carpets every day for a week. Repeated Ovex and thankfully haven’t had them since.

I was like a woman possessed.

MrsSarahSiddons · 04/09/2018 17:56

Nah, burn down the house and spray the remains with one hundred gallons of Zoflora.

LifesTooShortForMatchingSocks · 04/09/2018 17:56

I did think it was school however ds has been on school holidays. He's been still paying with friends over holidays though and I think play centres are probably rife with them. I think ds constantly having his fingers in his mouth is most likely the cause. I constantly remind him at home but trying to get him to stop isn't easy.

We went through this a few times - only ds2
got them though. I ended up not being convinced that all the washing etc did anything at all, and he grew out of them at about 10. Ovex definitely works though.

LifesTooShortForMatchingSocks · 04/09/2018 17:59

I've done everything every time we've had them but nothing seems to help! He must be picking them up somewhere. Going to ovex the entire family tonight and boil wash bedding etc tomorrow. They could literally be on everything though I might just burn it all down Grin

Oh god I can't make it to 10! Another 5 years. I might try the bitter nail stuff for ds.

It sounds like he keeps getting reinfected. You need to make sure he’s red hot on hand washing and keeping his hands out of his mouth as far as possible.

ScottishInSwitzerland · 04/09/2018 18:05

We had them. Washed the sheets once on a 39 degree wash, gave the tablets, made them wear pants to bed and kept their nails clean for about a week. And they went away. That was a year ago and (touch wood, fingers crossed etc etc etc) the horrid little creatures haven’t returned.

So I think it sounds like you’re just unlucky and he keeps getting them at school. Probably some other child sticking their eggy fingernails in the play doh 🤢

PandaPieForTea · 04/09/2018 18:05

Have you repeated Ovex or only once you’ve established reinfection?

Grizistheshiz · 04/09/2018 18:06

How can you tell is you have threadworms? Is it obvious?

We’ve dodged this so far (or maybe we all have them and don’t realise?)

LifesTooShortForMatchingSocks · 04/09/2018 18:09

Yes have been repeating ovex after 2 weeks.
I have seen them Grizi. Dd had said her underneath was a bit sore so I went in during the night armed with a torch and checked. They tend to come out during the night to lay eggs.

Get the disgusting stuff for the nails.
We had them before but thankfully managed to get rid of them pretty easily. But it was only DD that had them.
We did clean the house and did a lot of hand washing but not as much as we probably should have.
Also wash his bum and scrub his nails 1st thing in the morning before he touches anything. And of course pants to bed.

Grizistheshiz · 04/09/2018 18:13

Thanks, I will check my little one later as he has eczema and often scratches his bottom, so we always just assume it is the eczema.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 04/09/2018 18:19

Dd had them repeatedly and in the end (after lots of googling) we tried eating tons of pineapple and pumpkin seeds and that sorted it out!!

hettie · 04/09/2018 18:48

Does school or playgroup have play dough? Magic stuff for harbouring eggs🤤

Believeitornot · 04/09/2018 18:56

You could break the cycle by smearing Vaseline around his bottom and every one else then giving a good clean in the morning. This will catch any eggs laid on him in the night (alongside any washing etc).

HerbNotErb · 04/09/2018 19:05

I ovex my nose picking nail biters every three months.
This is following a year of treating having to treat regularly after seeing the little buggers. I think some kids /adults can live with their parasites with minimal symptoms so its not always obvious.
Reduce sugar in the diet & pumpkin seeds helps.

LifesTooShortForMatchingSocks · 04/09/2018 19:08

Thanks I will try the Vaseline and pumpkin seeds. I'll try anything at this point. I've also heard a low sugar diet helps.

ShowOfHands · 04/09/2018 19:11

40% of primary age have them at any given time, most without symptoms. We had a year where ds kept getting them despite our obsessive efforts and now we just dose the family every few months with Ovex. We stopped 6 months ago and ds ended up with them again so we're back to 3 monthly Ovex.

HerbNotErb · 04/09/2018 19:18

I wish it wasn't so pricey & a bottle that markets itself as family size (with a picture of four people on the front) should have enough for 8 doses rather than 6

HerbNotErb · 04/09/2018 19:22

Grrr meant to to add this to my last post
2 doses needed for each of the 4 people yet the bottle has 6
I need to tweet ovex to complain,.
As an aside if I ever mention threadworms to my friends they all swear their kids have never had them.

ThirdChildFourthPile · 04/09/2018 19:26

I worm my children every 3 months.

Keeps them at bay.

LifesTooShortForMatchingSocks · 04/09/2018 19:28

I usually use the ovex tablets but They only come in 4s. I suppose it's all a money making thing like everything else!
