eBay prices! 🤔

AbeautifulBeast · 04/09/2018 12:36

Just looking for some autumn/winter jumpers on eBay.
The prices for 'used' jumpers is astronomical....I'm talking about Primark sweaters with a starting price of £13-£15 🤨
Clearly I don't have to buy them (and believe me I won't be) but aibu to think people are just greedy?
What happened to the £0.99 starting bid that most people used to use for cheaper items of clothing?

Coats and jumpers always sell for loads at this time of year

OutPinked · 04/09/2018 12:40

Lots of people make a business out of selling on eBay. They will buy things in places like Primark, Poundland, home bargains etc and sell them on eBay for 3x+ the amount. They actually do sell as well.

Andtheresaw · 04/09/2018 12:40

ebay isn't a good place to sell cheaper items of clothing any more because you have to post tracked as so many CFs deny receipt that then 99p t shirt ends up costing £5 and no-one will buy it.
If it's on at £13-15 I'd expect it to be BNWT/WOT and for postage to be included if it's a primark item.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 04/09/2018 12:44

Why is it greedy to charge so much? You said yourself most seem to be priced the same? It is September so obviously jumpers and jackets are going to be more expensive than if you had looked in May and June.

Also if people like the design of something it doesn't matter if its a Primark jumper. I assume you can longer buy it in Primark so I would pay what they were asking if I liked it enough.

2018Already · 04/09/2018 12:46

Once you’ve factored in eBay and PayPal costs and time packing and taking stuff to the post office, £13-15 is barely worth a seller’s time.

As a buyer, you could drive / take public transport to Primark (costs money) and then cost up your time for the hour of your life spent looking for a new jumper. I think I’d prefer to buy on eBay.

AbeautifulBeast · 04/09/2018 12:53

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone it matters to me because I don't want to pay almost full price for an item that has been worn.
I will also point out most of the ones I've seen are not bnwt at all, definitely used!

OP posts:
OutPinked · 04/09/2018 12:55

If they’re used then that’s completely different and you’re most definitely being ripped off.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 04/09/2018 12:57

it matters to me because I don't want to pay almost full price for an item that has been worn.

So go and buy a new one then? Like others have said after factoring in Paypal fees and postage why would someone sell it for 99p. They might as well give it to a charity shop, its less stressful and time consuming and the charity will benefit.

At the end of the day if people want to buy it for that price they will and if not it will sit on Ebay unsold. Though the chances are if most are listed for £13 then that's because people know they will sell for £13.

WhiteCoyote · 04/09/2018 12:59

I’ve bought a few expensive branded jumpers on eBay for £5 each. They’ll last me years. I don’t bother with primark ones cause they’ll fade/bobble/look shit by next year. If primark jumpers are that much on eBay, why not just go to primark and buy them?

Only time I’ve paid rrp for a used jumper was when my absolute favourite got ruined by dp tumble drying it and it was from a few years ago so wasn’t in shops anymore. Maybe that’s what the sellers are hoping for 🤷‍♀️

AbeautifulBeast · 04/09/2018 12:59

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone do you struggle to read an op? I clearly stated I wouldn't be buying them at that price... I am more than well aware I can buy them new for less.

OP posts:
KatieMarieJ · 04/09/2018 13:01

That's why Shpock and Facebook are better these days. Unless the item was something I seriously loved and couldn't get by going to Primary today (because it was last years or had sold really well) I personally wouldn't pay that much for it.

Littlemissdaredevil · 04/09/2018 13:01

I don’t buy low value items on EBay any more as I find once you factor in the postage it isn’t worth it

AbeautifulBeast · 04/09/2018 13:04

Littlemissdaredevil exactly, not only are they trying to sell them for £13-15 they are charging £3-4 postage.
I do wonder who actually buys them, they are being ripped off!

OP posts:
HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 04/09/2018 13:04

No I don't but equally you seem unable to understand that selling an item for 99p is simply no longer worth it on Ebay. I don't understand why you would start this thread if you have no intention of listening to peoples reasoning as to why you are unlikely to find cheap clothes listed.

You called the people listing them greedy but they are simply selling an item to raise money which will likely be brought by someone even if you don't buy it. I just don't understand why you are so hostile towards these sellers?

sleepismysuperpower1 · 04/09/2018 13:06

you could try gumtree or preloved instead. you may have better luck on there. everything5pounds is also another option x

GabsAlot · 04/09/2018 13:12

used stuff no way brand new maybe if it was something i couldnt get anyhmore on the high street

AbeautifulBeast · 04/09/2018 13:13

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone hardly hostile, you must be very sensitive if you think that is hostile (or you are on of the sellers ripping people off! 🤔)
sleepismysuperpower1 thanks for the recommendation, I'll take a look!

OP posts:
2018Already · 04/09/2018 13:18

It’s not a rip off if the buyer is willing to pay the price quoted! That’s what’s known as a ‘deal’.
If you’re getting a jumper for 99p, someone else is missing out. (That’s before you even take into consideration the exploitative Primark manufacturing costs which are probably the reason people expect something for nothing in the first place and the topic for a whole other thread...)

Piffle11 · 04/09/2018 13:19

I do agree with you that stuff on eBay is no longer the bargain it used to be! Selling used clothes from shops such as Primark never used to be worth your while unless you sold as a bulk buy. I guess it's fine to charge/ask what you want, as people aren't under obligation to buy, and I think eBay is great for selling stuff that you would usually have given away, or had to advertise in a local paper. I wouldn't necessarily say sellers are greedy, but I think in some instances they are delusional.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 04/09/2018 13:19

hardly hostile, you must be very sensitive if you think that is hostile (or you are on of the sellers ripping people off!

Ok I see I have annoyed you in some way and that was not my intention. Lots of parents use Ebay to make extra money especially towards Christmas to provide nice things for their children. Maybe I over reacted but I don't think its fair for people to claim they are greedy or ripping people off just because they are trying to make a little extra money, they are not forcing you to buy the item.

Currently on Ebay if you search women jumpers for 99p there are 2084 matches so hopefully if you readjust your search criteria you might find something that fits the bill for the price you are looking to spend.

AbeautifulBeast · 04/09/2018 13:24

Also I never stated I only intended to spend £0.99 just that the usual starting bid was that value....
I have bought plenty off eBay for around a fiver or a little more, usually new look or river island etc. I just can't get my head around people paying almost full price for something that has already been worn.
I appreciate people are trying to make money for all sorts of reasons, I just didn't realize people were happy to pay those prices!

Yippeeeeee · 04/09/2018 13:30

A seller friend told me the Disney/Harry Potter/licensed stuff from Primark is big with overseas buyers and she marks up her prices accordingly.

LeighaJ · 04/09/2018 13:32

You get much better deals on jumpers and coats if you buy them in the early summer. That's how I got all of my beautiful coats for a bargain.

There are still loads of good deals if you're patient as well.

We bought a bundle of Purflo stuff for our daughter that would have cost £400 new but was only a fiver gently used on eBay.

I got lots of cheap second-hand and bnwt maternity wear for very little as well.

LeighaJ · 04/09/2018 13:35

I will pay retail price on eBay if the item is something I'm desperate to have But sold out in stores before I could get it. Also for things I want from the US that I can't get here.

AbeautifulBeast · 04/09/2018 13:36

Mmmm I may carry on looking, I think there are still reasonably priced items just that the Primark jumpers took me by surprise!
