To ask if there's a language you want to learn?

Just that really. Mine is German, hopefully one day I'll be fluent in German. If you're fluent in a language or two, how did you do it?

I'm hoping living in Germany for a year or two will do Blush

I want to learn to read and write punjabi. I can speak the language fluently as I was brought up in a bilingual household but I never got around to learning how to read and write it.

sirmione16 · 02/09/2018 22:51

Sign language. It's in my maternity leave bucket list.

HappyEverIftar · 02/09/2018 22:52

Arabic. I'm in KSA and shamefully on,y know a few words. English is widely spoken but it's such an interesting language. I really have no excuses.

maZebraltov · 02/09/2018 22:53

Korean, maybe? So different from English. And it sounds nice. Supposed to be very challenging to learn, I like challenges.

Most any other tongue could be good instead, too :).

Jimdandy · 02/09/2018 22:56

Spanish

DickensianHysteric · 02/09/2018 22:56

I'd love to learn French properly. Did it at school and am now working through the Duolingo course. I've only ever been to France once but I'd love to go back and travel around and eat cheese and drink red wine.

Heute · 02/09/2018 22:58

@HappyEverIftar Yeah. Arabic is also on my list, it's a beautiful language. Since you're in KSA I'd encourage you to speak as much Arabic as you know/can, and hopefully you'll get better at it. The more you speak, the better. Speaking English all the time will just make you lazy.

I’m fluent in French and Spanish. I’d like to learn Italian properly. I can mostly read it.

I learnt proper French by living there, Spanish by association with a lot of immigrants at my school in London. They taught me loads!

Heute · 02/09/2018 23:00

@Maelstrop interesting. How long did you live in France before you became fluent?

I want German too! I try so hard to learn it, spend at least 10 minutes a day practicing but never seem to get past beginner basics.

ItsScoob · 03/09/2018 04:39

I speak English, French, Latin. I'd like to learn Arabic.

In a terribly British way, I wouldn't learn a language unless I really had to.

erinaceus · 03/09/2018 04:40

Same as @sirmione16, I've wanted to learn BSL for a long time.

toomuchtooold · 03/09/2018 06:09

I live in Germany and I do speak German fairly fluently these days but boy was it an uphill struggle. I think some people are made for language learning and I am not one of those people Smile

For German, there are tests at the B2 and C1 level of the European languages framework - there's the test DaF, and the Goethe Institut and TELC have their own too - B2 is good for jobs where you need a basic level of German (e.g. manual work, cleaning, non customer facing stuff) and the C1 is the one you need for entry to German language university/college.

Your preferred learning style will have an effect on how much you progress in classes vs going out and speaking the language but I think for German, there's so much grammar that you do need to take some classes. I also use Duolingo which is great for short daily practice.

MargaretDribble · 03/09/2018 06:19

I am learning German with Duolingo. My German neighbour is very impressed by the vocab.

Heute · 03/09/2018 07:02

@toomuchtooold how long did it take you to learn it?

OP posts:
3TresTrois · 03/09/2018 07:04

French and sign language.

Both on my to do list when kids are a bit older!

00100001 · 03/09/2018 07:04

Spanish and sign language

only know basics of each

Kewqueue · 03/09/2018 07:05

I would like to relearn French . I have a degree in French but it was so long ago that I have forgotten it. I am in France atm and as soon as I try out my rusty French people switch to English! Blush I also fancy learning Icelandic.

ismellsnow · 03/09/2018 07:06

Spanish. I also recommend Duolingo, it's a great app for learning the basics and giving you a solid base to build on.

Spudlet · 03/09/2018 07:09

Latin. I've been visiting lots of Roman ruins this week and I'd love to be able to read the inscriptions on things!

I can get by in Italian, I used to be more fluent when I lived here but that was 15 years ago. Being here with DS and FiL has definitely improved my vocabulary, somehow when I was 20 year old student, things like pushchairs, cots, nappies and at the other end of the scale, dental crown adhesive, never came up in conversation Grin I lived here for a year and was pretty confident when I left, although you do have to watch out for people wanting to practice their English on you - fair enough, but make sure you get to practice your language too!

toomuchtooold · 03/09/2018 07:09

I did it in dribs and drabs... did GCSE German at school, then weekly evening classes for 3 years, then nothing for a decade, and then an intensive 3 month course that ended with the TELC B2 test which I passed. That was three years ago, and I've been living in Germany since then - I would guess I'm probably at C1 level-ish now, although I could have got there faster if I'd done some formal learning in the meantime. I reckon if I'd been doing total Immersion/intensive classes I could have mastered the lot in about a year.

MeyMary · 03/09/2018 07:18

Guten Tag :)

I'm a native German speaker. I would however like to improve my English (I did take and pass the Cambridge advanced but would love to do the proficiency)... I would also like to improve my Russian (incredibly basic), my Swedish (very mediocre) or learn an entirely different language. (Hebrew has always interested me)

But I have decided to learn
Spanish (for practical reasons)... I already speak two similar/related languages and feel like Spanish would benefit me professionally. And it is a beautiful language. :)

Luxembourgmama · 03/09/2018 07:29

I'm married to a german which helps and living in luxembourg I'm exposed to french on a daily basis. I'm learning Luxembourgish and would like to learn to Portuguese and Irish.

MissusGeneHunt · 03/09/2018 07:33

@MeyMary your written English is amazing!

I'd love to be able to speak French and Italian fluently. I did BSL Stage 1 and loved it, but many years ago ; if you don't use it, you lose it, sadly.

paintinmyhairAgain · 03/09/2018 07:35

my dd is teaching herself japanese and is doing very well, i'm learning some so when she speaks i can understand some of it ! Smile.
