Just that really. Mine is German, hopefully one day I'll be fluent in German. If you're fluent in a language or two, how did you do it?

I'm hoping living in Germany for a year or two will do Blush

Too many. French. Georgian. An Arabic, not sure which, maybe Lebanese. Altai. Old English. Brythonic. Russian. German. Old Norse. Attic and koine Greek (with modern not reconstructed pronunciation).

SockEatingMonster · 03/09/2018 07:42

I would love to get fluent in French. We visit quite often (2 x 7-10 day per year) and I practice all I can, but lack the vocabulary and grammar to get beyond my present-tense only pidgin French. On the positive side, I do always get complimented on my accent.

MeyMary · 03/09/2018 07:50

@MissusGeneHunt

Thanks, I really appreciate the compliment:)

I've just responded you.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 03/09/2018 07:50

I’m fluent in German and can speak basic Russian, but would love to improve. I’ve always wanted to learn Icelandic, and Welsh.

MeyMary · 03/09/2018 07:51

I've just responded to you?

I've just sent you a response. 🙈🤔

shartsi · 03/09/2018 07:53

Turkish. I love Turkish dramas. I have picked up plenty of words.

HippyChickMama · 03/09/2018 08:06

Did French, German and Latin at school for GCSE. French is the only one I've used since and I can just about get by on holiday in France. I would love to learn Welsh, I want to move to Snowdonia and I think it would only be right to speak Welsh I also think it's a beautiful language.

confusedandemployed · 03/09/2018 08:10

I'd love to learn Portuguese. Also ancient languages like Assyrian and Aramaic. Fascinating.

I'm a fluent Welsh speaker and have always fancied having a dabble with the other Celtic languages.

Finfintytint · 03/09/2018 08:13

Welsh is on my list. I can now pronounce place names and know a few everyday phrases but would love to learn the language properly.

JillianHoltzmann · 03/09/2018 15:43

I have a german pen pal but it's hard to communicate since I can't actually read what she's written!

Maelstrop · 03/09/2018 22:35

@Heute about 6 months, but it was total immersion, the family I worked for spoke no English.

ShinyMe · 03/09/2018 22:43

I've always been good at languages (both parents speak French and my mum also speaks German and Swiss German, and we travelled a lot, and I grew up in North Wales speaking Welsh at school) but the thing that did it for me was having a boyfriend. I had a French boyfriend from age about 17-19, and then a German boyfriend when I was in my 20s, and that's what made me fluent. Spending extended periods of time in the country and being immersed in it is the best way to become fluent, imo. It's very hard to get fluent unless you're using the language in your daily life, I think. I left Wales 20 years ago and while I still understand it, my spoken Welsh is really rusty. I learnt Spanish to a decent level too, but use it so rarely that I've forgotten most of it. I rarely speak French these days either, but it got so ingrained that the fluency comes back very quickly when I go there or meet a native speaker.

WomanOfTime · 03/09/2018 22:47

Spanish and Latin.

I'm too much of a dilettante and know bits of many different languages but not enough to hold a decent conversation in any of them.

BarryManilowRocks · 03/09/2018 23:20

Welsh for me!

Lisabel · 04/09/2018 00:09

Spanish- I think it would be useful.
Scottish Gaelic- it's complex, unusual, family members use it and it's about identity/culture.

Currently know some Swedish, German and French but not fluent or even remotely close to fluent so could do with learning more of those too!

DuoLingo is good and the BBC have a Spanish learning film series, which is useful too.

NoTeaNoShadeNoPinkLemonade · 04/09/2018 00:11

I want to learn korean, mandarin and give Japanese another go.

GertrudetheFifth · 04/09/2018 00:12

I am fairly fluent in German (approx C1 level). Have been living in Germany for four years, I began with Duolingo, Babbel and Rosetta Stone before moving, then evening class twice a week. Hours and hours of reading books with dictionaries, watching German TV, practicing with people. It’s been hard work, but worth it.

It also made me really respect anyone combining study with a full time job.

Branleuse · 04/09/2018 00:18

Id love to be fluent in french.
Would also like to learn spanish

pinkunicorn20 · 04/09/2018 06:49

Sign language, it's sorely needed in my line of work to make services more accessible imo.

MrsFrankDrebin · 04/09/2018 07:27

I've been lucky enough to learn a lot of BSL because one of my best friends is Deaf. Although she lip reads well, I realised that any social interaction was just such an effort for her, and she tends to sign when she talks anyway, so I asked her to start teaching me so she wasn't the one doing all the work. My children learned too (and could then talk about me behind my back in the same room without me knowing!).

If you've got an interest in linguistics, the grammar structure of BSL is fascinating, and it's actually really easy to learn once you get going - no tenses for a start, you just establish what day/period of time you are referring to first, the location of the subject of the thing you're talking about, then you do everything in the present tense! And no small words cluttering up the phrasing a lot of the time! I'd like to be a lot better, but I can have a (slow) conversation with another Deaf person in sign language if I need to. I can highly recommend it, although it can be hard to find classes at a reasonable cost.

With regard to spoken languages, I'd like to learn Japanese.

Deathraystare · 04/09/2018 07:31

Loads! mandarin, Norwegian, Swedish, Icelandic, Finnish, German, French, Italian, Spanish.....

Deathraystare · 04/09/2018 07:32

Oh and Japanese! Love those snippets on the food channel in the adverts (Yakult)

ScottChegg · 04/09/2018 07:42

If I only could pick one and stick with it. The problem is I have no actual reason beyond personal interest to learn any language over any other so I keep starting new ones.

At the moment I'm having a stab at Mandarin.
