To think that actually Sporty Spice was pretty damn beautiful and to wonder why she was always overlooked

Just got a 90's music channel on in the background and they have played a couple of spice girl songs. I was a teenager when they were big and people often had a favourite and it was never her. But with my older eyes I can see how lovely she was and still is now. So why was she so overlooked? She had the best voice too Confused

Rudgie yep she definitely had an attitude when she was older. Bloody unbearable after getting a part in a soap but she was ok in school.

Feeling so nostalgic reading this thread! I had the inflatables too, forgot they even existed until I saw the pic MissionItsPossible posted! I also had the silly platform trainers which I think I wore twice, despite insisting to my mum I would wear them constantly..

The Spice Girls were very ‘set’ in their personas weren’t they. Not allowed to do anything to throw off their specific image, which is why poor Sporty was always stuck in her trackies! It seems so dated now, I can’t imagine little mix like that. But the 90s were a different time!

Mel C’s voice really carried them a lot of the time. I’m glad she did well in her solo career, still love that song she did with Bryan Adams.

PositiveVibez · 02/09/2018 17:37

I still love the Spice Girls, but Mel C's voice is like nails on a blackboard.

It is somehow sounds nasally AND tight throated at the same time.

And while she is in no way ugly whatsoever, she certainly wasn't the best looking out the group.

BitOfFun · 02/09/2018 17:39

She's a really lovely and genuine unaffected person- I think she's great, and much more attractive than how she was portrayed.

MobMoll · 02/09/2018 17:40

I always thought Sporty was the prettiest and the other ones looked a bit grubby. The styling on all of them was terrible though!

Annabelle4 · 02/09/2018 17:42

I've just looked through some google images of them now, it's interesting to look at them through adult eyes now.

I feel a bit uncomfortable about the styling of 'baby spice' - she's babyish/sweet/innocent/pretty, but there's an obvious sexual element to her image too

Batteriesallgone · 02/09/2018 17:45

I thought the whole point was that she was pretty Confused

Telling girls that if you are beautiful but would rather be into sports thats fine, you do you, don’t focus on wafting around being pretty because that’s what society expects from pretty girls.

Was that not part of the whole ‘girl power’ message?

  • scary was willing to ‘take up space’
  • posh didn’t smile (as girls are expected to)
  • sporty didn’t care about ‘looking pretty’
  • ginger wore skimpy outfits and didn’t care about dressing like a ‘naice’ girl, refused to be ‘slut shamed’
  • baby fulfilled the stereotypical girly role but overdid it to the point of nauseating on purpose

I wonder if I’ve overanalysed it Grin

No her singing voice was awful, sorry and she always seems to put on her speaking voice even now.

I loved Baby Spice's 60s vibe and her solo stuff was excellent. She was the real talent IMO.

witchofzog · 02/09/2018 17:57

I used to like Ali G but I don't remember that interview. From what was written at least Victoria stood up for her. I have heard Victoria is far from po faced in every day life and I imagine she would require good fun. Ditto to Emma B. I can't stand Mel B though- she comes across as very aggressive and just not that nice

I imagine Victoria would be not require Blush

I loved the spice girls but I really don't think any of them can sing .. hold a note yes but properly sing , definitely not . Mel c has a awful grate to her voice . 🤷‍♀️

hendricksy · 02/09/2018 18:06

But I do think she has aged well along with all of them really . Mel b seems to be mucking around with her face !!
I think the reason she was overlooked is because she wasn't sexy as such , she wore tracksuits whilst the others wore tight dresses .

PrincessScarlett · 02/09/2018 18:13

Batteries all gone, yes that was the girl power message about being pretty and sporty etc but the media and "comedians" still called her ugly all the time when compared to the others.

SuperSuperSuper · 02/09/2018 18:18

My flatmate loved her. He also liked Jet from Gladiators. And Angelina in Tomb Raider. He definitely had a type!

I loved Victoria's glossy bob.

I remember Victoria saying that Mel C got loads of freebies sent to her from sports companies - she received more free stuff than the other four, she said.

RavenLG · 02/09/2018 18:24

Sporty was definitely one of the most popular I remember among friends
Same here, I did gymnastics so always wanted to 'be' Sporty when we 'played' Spice Girls. Problem was most of my friends we're sporty and I was short and a little chubby so always got made to be Baby or Geri lol.

picklemepopcorn · 02/09/2018 18:28

I was too old to have a favourite spice girl. But Mel C would have been it!

Chickenwings85 · 02/09/2018 18:35

I was a child/young teen when they were around and sporty was my absolute favourite! I loved everything about her and just wanted to be her so badly.

Elderflower14 · 02/09/2018 19:18

I love her
The dress suits her and she sings beautifully.

Beelin · 02/09/2018 20:46

Who can forget the deep meaning behind lyrics like:

I can't live without my phone
And you don't even have a home

A+

SusanChurchouse · 02/09/2018 20:54

I love Mel C. Actually went to see her live when she toured her solo album. I always had a soft spot for Geri too. Even when she was being a bit of a daftie.

There was a fun article in the Grauniad about the guy who'd interviewed all the Spice Girls and said Mel C was the least affected famous person ever. That she was the only interviewee who'd made him a cup of tea!
