To think that actually Sporty Spice was pretty damn beautiful and to wonder why she was always overlooked

Just got a 90's music channel on in the background and they have played a couple of spice girl songs. I was a teenager when they were big and people often had a favourite and it was never her. But with my older eyes I can see how lovely she was and still is now. So why was she so overlooked? She had the best voice too Confused

I never understood how Victoria was deemed the boring or stand-offish one, I thought (and still do) she has a sense of humour from interviews and the official spice girl video I had and used to watch every day Blush

I also had the tatoo transfers from TOTP magazine Grin

I had the inflatables (I know how it sounds but see picture!) from TOTP magazine!

I think she is a lovely young woman with a very good voice. Wasn't aware she was overlooked, she was an integral part of the Spice Girls in their day, can't imagine them without her. She shouts her private life less than the others but I think that's a good thing.

Mel C was anorexic and emaciated for most of her time in the Spice Girls, which is no doubt part of the reason she was kept in tracksuits -- to hide quite how thin she really was.

Lovemelikeimfabulous · 02/09/2018 16:48

I met Mel C in a pub about 20 years ago. She was lovely and was happy to sign an autograph for my daughter. My friend approached her not me, I didn’t dare but she was very friendly

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 02/09/2018 16:51

Posh was always my favourite blush

Mine too. Sporty was never beautiful, fairly pretty at a push. I alway found her affected and as if she was trying to get away from her roots/accent. Nice enough though. Scary was my least favourite - rough as toast!

MakeYourOwnFuckingTea · 02/09/2018 16:52

I was friends and in the same year as Danielle (Mel B's younger sister) and even then she was seen as a bit of a bully.

@Medea13

Mel C emaciated and anorexic? Confused

She never looked like that!

Did you mean to say Victoria?!

MrsSchadenfreude · 02/09/2018 16:59

DD1 was at school with, and friends with, Mel B's eldest daughter. She had quite a loud personality as well! Before she came to the school, the girls in the dorm were all told that she was coming and that her mother was really famous, but they were to treat her like everyone else. Most of the girls in the school had never heard of Mel B, which I thought was quite funny.

SockMatchmaker · 02/09/2018 16:59

I really don’t like her voice, just always really grated but they weren’t really singers let’s be honest but I did like the group. I never got the posh hate either, I always thought she had a good sense of humour too. (Not so sure now days though)

tillytoodles1 · 02/09/2018 17:02

A woman I know worked in a bridal shop and Sporty came in with the bride, she was a bridesmaid. The woman said she was really attractive, with gorgeous gorgeous skin, and looked so different in normal clothes and her hair down.

tillytoodles1 · 02/09/2018 17:03

Sorry, put gorgeous twice!

MissionItsPossible · 02/09/2018 17:04

I read this (was it from her autobiography?) but I think she said she was bulimic, not anorexic or emaciated and she was not always in tracksuits either, mostly vest tops and clearly never anorexic in photos or videos from her Spice Girls days.

ElspethFlashman · 02/09/2018 17:06

I do remember bulimia, I definitely think she's talked about disordered eating.

But half that group had disordered eating. In the 90s people had to be teeny tiny, like baby birds. All those belly tops, ugh.

MouseholeCat · 02/09/2018 17:07

I was a child in the 90s and Sporty spice was my favourite. She could sing the best and did lots of cool kicks and stuff.

letsgomaths · 02/09/2018 17:07

Aww, all this is making me want to watch Spiceworld the Movie for nostalgia, which I rushed out to buy the day it was released; it was on a lime green video cassette. I still have a VCR to play it on! I'll have to see if she looked anorexic in that scene when she dressed up as Posh.

In Jools Holland's words, it was... "perfect, without actually being any good". Mel C's thing in it was that she would roll her eyes every time Geri made some learned comment. "Don't worry, I know all about home delivery (of babies)".

ElspethFlashman · 02/09/2018 17:13

She was pretty flipping thin without those trackies on, but who knows what was going on there. She looks really great these days, that's for sure.

It always made me laugh how the rest of them did the low throaty bit at the start of the lyric and then she'd be wheeled on to do the high note at the end cos she was the only one who could.

Mel B:, "dur dur dur dur durrrrr....." Mel C: "......... AGAAAAAAIIIIINNNN!"

MakeYourOwnFuckingTea Its interesting you say that about Danielle, my friend used to work in a bar that Danielle frequented and she said she was really horrible and nasty.

Bahhhhhumbug · 02/09/2018 17:15

I always thought she was the best looking and e eryone used to say 'baby' spice was the prettiest /girliest but she has no top lip look and big teeth draw attention to this.

Bahhhhhumbug · 02/09/2018 17:17

don't know what that random 'look' was in there for.

Methe · 02/09/2018 17:18

I’ve never been able to stand her speaking or singing voice and turn off the radio if she comes on. Sure she can sing in tune but her voice is so nasally and harsh sounding, it isn’t nice to listen to. I don’t think any of them had decent voices tbh!

DinoGreen · 02/09/2018 17:24

Well as a fairly tomboyish 11 year old in 1998 at the height of the Spice Girls’ fame, Sporty Spice was always my favourite and I used to proudly dress in my trackies (the ones with the poppers down the side) and the highest of high ponytails I could manage. My sister was a redhead so naturally she was Ginger whenever we played Spice Girls.

DinoGreen · 02/09/2018 17:26

Also, I still like her Bryan Adams duet.

PrincessScarlett · 02/09/2018 17:29

Mel C was definitely thin in the spice girls. Victoria didn't get really thin until the end of the spice girls. I remember watching an interview with Mel C where she talked about her eating disorder. She said she always felt the ugly one (and Ali G's sketch mentioned above was not the only time she was compared to the others and called ugly). She said the only thing she could control was being the thinest so that's what she did. So sad as she was definitely the most talented.

Bad teeth
Terrible Adidas joggers

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 02/09/2018 17:31

Her speaking voice used to grate on me too, she was probably the best singer though and mosy talented. Emma Bunton is the prettiest.b
