To continue to use condiments that have been out of date for 4-6 months?

Red sauce and brown sauce we are talking about here. DH doesn't like them so I am the only one who uses them. Noticed today that the red sauce had a date of March and the brown sauce was May.

Used the red sauce this morning for the first time in I can't even remember. DH said it's disgusting and I should throw them out and buy new bottles.

I rarely use them, hence them being so past their prime. So I could buy new bottles but the same thing will just happen next year. I also dislike throwing things away and buying new when they are perfectly ok to use (I hope).

AIBU to continue using them until they are done or really do become unusable Grin ? Am I destined to be struck down with food poisoning? Is it really disgusting?

Think I'd bin them and buy very small bottles in future.

Lethaldrizzle · 02/09/2018 14:37

I'd use them but then I ignore alot of use by dates.

thenightsky · 02/09/2018 14:38

I'd throw them away and get new, much smaller ones.

noblegiraffe · 02/09/2018 14:38

It’s Best Before, not Use By. If the sauce tastes fine, then it is fine.

IKillEveryBloodyThreadIPostOn · 02/09/2018 14:40

llangennith- Hmm now there's an idea.

Lethaldrizzle- So do I- haven't died yet Grin DH is the opposite though and if it weren't for me stopping him he would throw everything away that went out of date at the stroke of midnight Hmm

noblegiraffe- you indeed a noble giraffe and have much more common sense than my DH Grin

If it looks, smells and tastes.ok then its ok.

DramaAlpaca · 02/09/2018 14:42

I'd continue to use them if they've been kept in the fridge. They are so full of preservatives that they'll last for ages.

If it bothers you, throw them out & like someone else said above replace them with smaller bottles.

1HitWonder · 02/09/2018 14:44

Eh, ive never really paid much attention to use by dates, I've not once had food poisoning.

The only one I might watch out for would be mayo because of the eggs, but ketchup etc is fine I think.

TroubledLichen · 02/09/2018 14:44

They’re cheap enough to replace, just buy new ones. And smaller bottles in future. I doubt it will kill you though.

Haberpop · 02/09/2018 14:46

They both contain enough vinegar to sink a small army, you will be fine.

CoughLaughFart · 02/09/2018 14:47

I recently spotted a jar of chutney I’ve been using for ages had a use by date of 2015 Shock I’m not dead yet!

You ARE unreasonable for calling ketchup ‘red sauce’ though.

sonjadog · 02/09/2018 14:49

I have condiments that are five years old in my fridge. Still taste the same. No way would I throw them out for just being months past the best before date.

Whatsthisbear · 02/09/2018 14:55

I wouldn’t. If it’s Heinz ketchup the back of the bottle says use within 8 weeks of opening & they have really long use by dates so you must have had it a fair while for it to have gone out of date Grin

IKillEveryBloodyThreadIPostOn · 02/09/2018 14:59

Excellent, glad to see I am not a, for a lack of a better word, minger [grim]

CoughLaughFart- I must dispute this. Pretty standard term from where I'm from. Has the 3 year old chutney gone to your head? Grin

Whatsthisbear- I think you are right. I have no idea if I even bought it in 2017- could very well have been before Blush Grin

Ha, love the way the smiley face failed and I got 'grim' instead of 'grin'. My computer clearly thinks I'm unreasonable Grin How ironic.

Foodylicious · 02/09/2018 15:04

I don't keep ours in the fridge as I can't stand cold ketchup on my chips.

Definitely just use it till it's all gone unless it tastes bad.

I say it's a 'best before' date, not 'poisonous after' Grin

Kool4katz · 02/09/2018 15:04

I have several homemade chutneys and some jam in my fridge from last summer that I'm still using up. It doesn't have a use by date obviously. I remember my grandma pickling veg and storing it on the pantry for years. I really hate all this unnecessary food waste and reliance on plastic.
If it smells ok and doesn't have mould growing on it, I'll happily eat it.

buttermilkwaffles · 02/09/2018 15:06

Second biggest ingredient of HP Brown Sauce is vinegar, so that should preserve it pretty well.

Ingredients: Tomatoes, Malt Vinegar (from Barley), Molasses, Glucose-Fructose Syrup, Spirit Vinegar, Sugar, Dates, Modified Cornflour, Rye Flour, Salt Spices, Flavourings, Tamarind.

P.S. Didn't know it was made in the Netherlands.

RavenLG · 02/09/2018 15:07

As others have said it's best before, not use by, and if it smells ok and tastes ok it's fine. So much waste by people chucking out food that is perfectly edible.

Jammiebammie · 02/09/2018 15:07

Chuck them! Once opened they can only really be kept for a few weeks anyway.
Can you not collect some little packets from restaurants/cafes if you don’t use that much?

Ginkypig · 02/09/2018 15:08

It's red sauce where I'm from too. So il disagree with cough on that one and say that It's completely reasonable to call it that.

I don't think red or brown sauce really goes off/bad as such but it might not taste the best or the texture may become odd.

CoughLaughFart · 02/09/2018 15:11

The term makes me wince.

Blubellesmum · 02/09/2018 15:19

Ketchup gets little bubbles in when it goes off.

I used to waitress way back when and we didn't refrigerate the stuff. Nothing worse then when it gets the little bubbles and explodes all over the place!😮

Keeping them in the fridge they stay good forever.
