To continue to use condiments that have been out of date for 4-6 months?

Red sauce and brown sauce we are talking about here. DH doesn't like them so I am the only one who uses them. Noticed today that the red sauce had a date of March and the brown sauce was May.

Used the red sauce this morning for the first time in I can't even remember. DH said it's disgusting and I should throw them out and buy new bottles.

I rarely use them, hence them being so past their prime. So I could buy new bottles but the same thing will just happen next year. I also dislike throwing things away and buying new when they are perfectly ok to use (I hope).

AIBU to continue using them until they are done or really do become unusable Grin ? Am I destined to be struck down with food poisoning? Is it really disgusting?

We still eat homemade chutney made a few years ago in a massive Kilmer jar kept in the fridge - ketchup will be fine

LoniceraJaponica · 02/09/2018 15:31

I think ketchup is use by once it is opened. I don't have an iron stomach so I would ditch it.

LongSummerDays · 02/09/2018 15:45

We're using a mustard with BBE 10/2016 at the mo - very nice it was on last nights bbq it was too!

MongerTruffle · 02/09/2018 15:52

Ketchup will last for two years after the best before date if unopened, one year after the best before date if opened and kept in the fridge, and one month after the best before date if opened and kept at room temperature.

(I'm not brave enough to test this, though.)

Cornettoninja · 02/09/2018 15:56

Ketchup gets little bubbles in when it goes off

Isn’t that fermentation rather than going off? You pay good money for that with some vegetables.

Go for it OP, condiments that are primarily vinegar only need chucking if they look noticeably wrong or taste odd. Even then it’s a demise in quality rather than a bottle of E. coli.

LemonysSnicket · 02/09/2018 16:02

If they smell ok and taste ok then I think they're ok... they both contain vinegar which is a preservative

BarbaraofSevillle · 02/09/2018 16:13

Sauce is full of sugar and vinegar, both of which are preservatives.

We too use one bottle of ketchup per blue moon and the last bottle was 2 years out of date when it was finished. It was kept in the fridge and was absolutely fine.

We use a bottle of brown sauce every month or two. That is kept at room temperature and probably goes past the 'once open use within 4 weeks' instruction, which is more to do with making people waste perfectly good food and go out and buy more of it.

LemonysSnicket · 02/09/2018 16:14

I call it tomato sauce, rather than Ketchup or red sauce ....

Anyone here call it Catsup?

BlueThursday · 02/09/2018 16:20

I’ve got cinnamon with a BBE 2013 and salt of BBE pf 2017 in my cupboards which I continue to use

Unless it looks or smells off I’d continue to use it

LoniceraJaponica · 02/09/2018 20:11

In the case of spices they won't have any flavour left, so I would ditch it.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/09/2018 21:20

Once opened they can only really be kept for a few weeks anyway

Do people really bin ketchup or brown sauce after a few weeks? What a waste - as others have said they are full of preservatives.

LoniceraJaponica · 02/09/2018 21:29

Not as full of preservatives as they used to be apparently. We keep ketchup in the fridge and throw the bottle away when it is empty Grin
(well actually we rinse and recycle)

JovialNickname · 02/09/2018 22:18

I have a bottle of HP sauce (the original recipe before they changed it) with a BBE of Dec 2015. I eat it with pride Grin
