Dressing my kid up in this...

My 10 year old son wants to go as a ‘scary snowman’ for his schools Halloween monster disco. I’m up for the challenge as I love doing special fx makeup, but is it too sinister for a ks2 Halloween party?

It would have to be a v tame version. Scary snowman is fine, scary killer snowman isn’t.

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 31/08/2018 22:07

It’s the mouth which is too much.

Lalliella · 31/08/2018 22:07

Go for it! Halloween is meant to be scary. Snowman meets snowflakes....

RevealTheHiddenBeach · 31/08/2018 22:08

That new version is much better. More cartoony as you say and less bloodthirsty!

Canshopwillshop · 31/08/2018 22:09

I think the scary snowman character is fine if toned down. Yes to carrot for the nose (how do you do that?) and channelling nightmare before Christmas.

upsideup · 31/08/2018 22:09

That new photo is basically every other child at any kids halloween parties we've been to. Its just black and white face paint, let him have a bit of fake blood as well.

AnnieAnoniMoose · 31/08/2018 22:10

Are you buying special effects make up, or just using face paint? Fine using face paint (not latex etc).

The thing is, people are looking at professionally made up adults, not a home done 10 year old. Huge difference.

WhatsUpPussycat123 · 31/08/2018 22:11

To be honest OP I hate the idea and I’d be really fucked off if my 7 year old was exposed to something like that. Snowmen are meant to be innocent and magical.

Toomanydecisions · 31/08/2018 22:12

Definitely not the first two. It scared the shit out of me....and I'm not 7

cricketmum84 · 31/08/2018 22:15

At 9 my son would have LOVED this!!!

My 9 year old daughter however would have nightmares for weeks!

Maybe one for a family party/trick or treating rather than the school party?

thegreatbeyond · 31/08/2018 22:17

I agree, Whatsup.

Purpleartichoke · 31/08/2018 22:18

It’s how far the makeup takes the concept. A kid with that particular makeup would not be admitted to our school Halloween event.

I can envision a child appropriate version that some kids might still find scary, but isn’t so viscerally terrifying.

cricketmum84 · 31/08/2018 22:20

Just RTFT - 2nd picture is much better. It's the mouth that I think was too much. Much prefer the nightmare before Christmas vibe to it.

TooMinty · 31/08/2018 22:21

These are all too scary for me and I'm nearly 40!

Hushabyelullaby · 31/08/2018 22:27

Whoah that'd scare the shit out of me, let alone a child. My DD is 11, HATES clowns and finds them creepy/scary. There are other kids her age that we know feel the same. I don't think it's a good idea personally.

KickAssAngel · 31/08/2018 22:56

OP - Would you rather upset loads of 7 year olds, or say no to your son?

Because it seems you need to do one or the other, and you are being pretty persistent with dressing your son like this, even when told that it will upset the younger kids. Can you say no to him for the school disco but do it another time?

smallchanceofrain · 31/08/2018 23:03

In DS2's last year of primary the school banned all costumes other than witches and wizards because of the number of complaints they'd had about masks and special effects type make up.

In this case I'd say it's okay for trick or treating but not for a KS2 disco.

scarysnowman · 31/08/2018 23:07

@KickAssAngel the pictures you’ve seen isn’t my version of the costume, it’s a ‘scary snowman’ that just looks a bit like a skeleton on a 10 year old. I have a 7 year old myself and I don’t think her or any of her friends would really be petrified of what I am planning to create. No fake blood will be involved and it will be very cartoonlike, I am sticking with this snowman costume as I don’t think children will really be THAT scared of it as people are making out.

If children would be scared of a cartoon skeleton snowman thing (I really don’t know what to call it), then they shouldn’t be going to the disco at all considering there will be a handful of kids dressed in clown costumes and full face makeup, zombies with special fx cuts, dolls with creepy makeup etc so I assume they must be scared of that type of costumes too. Halloween is supposed to be scary!

OP posts:
Amanduh · 31/08/2018 23:12

Halloween isn’t supposed to be scary for 7 year olds. They’re all totally inappropriate for a disco with Year 3!

Duskqueen · 31/08/2018 23:17

I personally think that is awesome, but you may want to tone it down just a little. There could be some children that are of a more nervous disposition at the school.

TheHollowLeggedGoat · 31/08/2018 23:19

... and in any case, if the school deem it too scary and make him go home / wash / take it off (quite likely, in my view), it will ruin his night and make him feel silly. Stick to something a LOT tamer, I would.

Hogtini · 31/08/2018 23:21

That would have given me nightmares for weeks at that age.

scarysnowman · 31/08/2018 23:22

My son won’t be walking around in a scary snowman character he’ll be joking around with his friends, having a laugh. The behaviour of someone in a costume is what really scares a child, well for my kids at least.

OP posts:
Toomanydecisions · 31/08/2018 23:26

Most of the posters have said the photos you posted were inappropriate. You said that that's not what you were going to do anyway and you're going to stick with your plan.

I think whatever anyone said you'd just do whatever it is you were going to anyway?

LeighaJ · 31/08/2018 23:40

THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A PICTURE WARNING IN TITLE!!! Shock Fucking frightening and not appropriate for that age bracket unless you want to scare the shit out of a bunch of kids.
