Dressing my kid up in this...

My 10 year old son wants to go as a ‘scary snowman’ for his schools Halloween monster disco. I’m up for the challenge as I love doing special fx makeup, but is it too sinister for a ks2 Halloween party?

Shit, no way!

pictish · 31/08/2018 21:14

Someone I know sent their 9 yr to the school Halloween party in a similar looking Pennywise the clown mask. Honestly it was way too much for a kids’ event. So inappropriate. Don’t do it.

upsideup · 31/08/2018 21:20

Oh come on its a bloody costume! Let him, I'm sure he'll look great and if he ends up looking really scary well thats kind the point of dressing up for halloween. If your kids is too scared of face paint then dont send them to a halloween disco, they're not ready for it.

pictish · 31/08/2018 21:22

Don’t be a nob Upsideup.

Do you let your seven year old watch horror movies?
Yeah you probably do.

Rebecca36 · 31/08/2018 21:24

Gross!

RevealTheHiddenBeach · 31/08/2018 21:26

I teach 9-10yos and if a child arrived in that I'm afraid I wouldn't let them into the disco. That is adult-level scary and some children are significantly more sensitive than others.

upsideup · 31/08/2018 21:29

Do you let your seven year old watch horror movies?

I let my 7 year old watch horror movies rated PG.

Dogatemyhomework666 · 31/08/2018 21:30

No...just NO!!! Not for a school disco where there are 7yr olds.

My 7yr old likes zombies and vampires so not against all things frightening but she would have nightmares of that!!!

recklessruby · 31/08/2018 21:30

No no just no. That mouth is freaky as hell. It's marvellous special effects but you're going to scare a lot of the younger ones witless.
If my dd had seen that at that age we would not have been getting any sleep that night (or for many nights).

RevealTheHiddenBeach · 31/08/2018 21:31

That mask would not be in a PG film and I think I would probably also be doing a concern form wondering what the child was watching at home to choose that as a Halloween costume. I'm not saying that you in particular are creating a CP issue OP, but that would definitely be my reaction.

KMoKMo · 31/08/2018 21:34

No. Inappropriate.

donquixotedelamancha · 31/08/2018 21:37

My (then) 2 YO went to her first halloween as Chucky. She looked so cute with scars on her face, carrying a blood stained machete.

I'd love to see that outfit at a party, though I will admit that I may not be a great barometer of the average parent.

PaddingtonBearHardStare · 31/08/2018 21:38

My just turned 7 year old starts KS2 next week. He would never go back if he saw that at school

Also YABU already organising Halloween in August HmmGrin

FluffyMcCloud · 31/08/2018 21:40

Awful. No way.

NotTakenUsername · 31/08/2018 21:43

YABU. Slow down, you have all the teen years for that sort of thing.

upsideup · 31/08/2018 21:43

What do all of your kids dress up as for halloween if this is so nightmare inducing?
My kids have almost always had white faces, black eyes and fake blood round their mouths as have most of their friends, its obviously dressing up and only face paint.

ineedabagformyhippo · 31/08/2018 21:46

Totally inappropriate, I doubt they'd be allowed in

ReanimatedSGB · 31/08/2018 21:50

I think that's a bit too effectively scary for that age. Couldn't you do a softer version - snowman with cartoonish fangs or something?

PhilomenaButterfly · 31/08/2018 21:51

upside DD's going as Bonnie from Five Nights at Freddy's this year. So basically a human sized purple mechanical rabbit.

Whatsthisbear · 31/08/2018 21:56

Pretty sure that if you managed to do it so he looked a gruesome as that the school would be calling you to collect him.

Canshopwillshop · 31/08/2018 21:56

A bit of face paint and fake blood is ok but I don’t think it’s appropriate if you can create the professional v scary look in the photo you’ve posted as you say you can.

scarysnowman · 31/08/2018 21:57

The makeup obviously wouldn’t look like this, it would be my adaptation of it. Is it the makeup that people say is inappropriate or the idea itself of a ‘scary killer snowman’.

Years gone by,kids have turned up dressed as Anne Boykin beheaded, and Freddie Krueger, still got in.

Hufflefloof · 31/08/2018 21:57

Our school has had to ban Halloween discos because the parents were going more and more extreme with the make up and effects, resulting in some of the younger kids having nightmares after the last one! There’s a big gap between the youngest year 3s and the already 11 yr old year 6 kids, and what they can cope with. I’d go with that for trick or treating, and tone it down for the disco

Booboostwo · 31/08/2018 22:00

It is very scary but it is scary because the make up in the photo is so well done and so realistic. If you effectively botch up the make up you will make it look fake and immediately less scary.

scarysnowman · 31/08/2018 22:03

Obviously not with the hair, and add a ‘carrot’ to the nose, but what about this version? To me this is a zombie snowman which I think is appropriate and more cartoon like. Gives me the nightmare before Christmas vibes.
