to give the Shopaholic series a thread of its own?

It's been mentioned on another thread but I thought it deserved a thread of its own! LIGHTHEARTED!!

The first time I read it, I loved it, but now I can't stand the main character (Becky or something?) who's a self-absorbed woman who gets herself in loads of debt, gets rich husband/parents/best friend to bail her out, sobs all over them, vows to learn from her mistakes and then repeats.

And she doesn't seem to age either! And neither does her daughter!

AIBU in wanting to burn the books? Grin

Yanbu

Read them loads when I was younger but my god they were stressful. The wedding one drove me crazy!

SilkeOvesen · 31/08/2018 11:59

I haven’t read them in years but I really enjoyed the first few.

yawning801 · 31/08/2018 12:02

If I remember rightly, her DM got a thimble collection from the Mail on Sunday! Another reason to dislike it! Grin

Why the duplicate post?

I loved these until she became a mother and her child was a spoiled brat. I had hoped motherhood would make her more self aware!

over invested

noblegiraffe · 31/08/2018 13:04

The first few were great, I loved the one with two weddings. The later ones have totally jumped the shark. There was one with a celebrity and a handbag(?) where Becky was vile.

rainbowsandsmiles · 31/08/2018 13:08

Oh, I love the Shopaholic series of books, I've read them all!
Agree though, Becky was a spoiled brat.
She was awful in Shopaholic Ties The Knot where she got married, the stringing both parents along so that they were both arranging different weddings for her - just make your bloody mind up and tell them!
Same with the one with her toddler daughter, she was teaching her to be a spoiled brat in the shops too.
Redeemed herself in the later book Shopaholic to the Rescue though, she was more nice and normal in that one.

Darkstar4855 · 31/08/2018 13:10

YANBU! I liked the earlier ones when she seemed to be learning from her mistakes and finding innovative ways to solve her own problems but in the later ones she just comes across as spoilt and self-absorbed.

distantstars · 31/08/2018 13:15

Yes! Loved these when they first came out but I was in my early 20s! Read the first pages of the Hollywood one and thought it was rubbish! Maybe it's an age thing?

Also tried reading sophine Kinsella books that are in her real? Name ... they were awful too!

Pibplob · 31/08/2018 13:15

I’ve read a couple and quite liked them. Will see if I can find any others and see if I agree with you when I’ve read the lot.

Skyejuly · 31/08/2018 13:18

I read them all. Loved first one and loved becky. Hated the last few

MidnightAura · 31/08/2018 13:19

The first few were good, the last two were garbage. Becky was a spoilt brat. Every mess she got herself into her rich Husband or parents bailed her out of. Jess was totally right about Becky!

QueenOfMyWorld · 31/08/2018 13:24

Aww I loved becky bloomwood, and in shopoholic and baby I'm glad Venitia got her comeuppance!

PinguDance · 31/08/2018 13:25

read the first ones when I was a teenager and they gave me a weird impression of adult life! Always liked them even though I was vaguely aware Becky would be a 'mare IRL - the bit I always remember from the first one is how Becky's redeeming quality is that she is resourceful and inventive, evidenced by her suggesting people should get the option of different coloured cheque books Grin. Excellent - what a woman.

I also like the film - Ilsa Fisher manages to make her seem quite nice really.

PinguDance · 31/08/2018 13:26

I also read an interview with Sophie Kinsella once and she seemed sort of mean so that put me off the books rather.

Reaa · 31/08/2018 13:27

I think in the last book I read of that series, Beckys dad had gone missing and she was living in America.

ButtonMirror · 31/08/2018 13:38

I loved these books and was so excited when the movie came out... until I realised it was American!! The books are not American so why is the movie?

rainbowsandsmiles · 31/08/2018 13:47

Yes, that's the last one of the series, don't think there's been any more after that.
He took off without telling anyone where on a mission to try and find his friend Brent to "put right a wrong" so they all tried to find out where he'd gone.

Agreed, that annoyed me too and I thought the film was utter crap!

may or may not be overinvested as well Grin

Shopaholic to the rescue was released in 2015!

The Madeleine Wickham ones? Read some of those, wasn't as keen on those ones as much.

MsOliphant · 31/08/2018 14:02

They were always far fetched but they got ridiculous. Doesn't she in one meet her half sister but dislikes her because she wears outdoorsy attire and diesht like shopping, and then goes to visit her in Lancaster or somewhere and climbs up a mountain in little heels and a designer handbag Confused

Polarbearflavour · 31/08/2018 14:08

I adore all the Sophie Kinsella books.

froomeonthebroom · 31/08/2018 14:08

The film was beyond awful. Why do producers insist on taking plots based in England and moving them to America? The Girl on the Train was a victim of this and was also terrible.

MidnightAura · 31/08/2018 14:08

@MrsOliphant That’s right! I think the wedding one was worse in terms of ridiculous plot lines. Becky was a bridezilla!
