It's been mentioned on another thread but I thought it deserved a thread of its own! LIGHTHEARTED!!

The first time I read it, I loved it, but now I can't stand the main character (Becky or something?) who's a self-absorbed woman who gets herself in loads of debt, gets rich husband/parents/best friend to bail her out, sobs all over them, vows to learn from her mistakes and then repeats.

And she doesn't seem to age either! And neither does her daughter!

AIBU in wanting to burn the books? Grin

Yes Becky was a nightmare. And didn't pay for any of it because she's workshy 😂

rainbowsandsmiles · 31/08/2018 14:11

and then goes to visit her in Lancaster or somewhere and climbs up a mountain in little heels and a designer handbag

Cumbria. Jess was cool. Smile I'm definitely in camp Jess when it comes to shopping, Becky would do my head in if I knew her in RL Grin

I read a couple of Madeleine Wickham books and then noticed they started being marketed as "Sophie Kinsella writes as Madeleine Wickham".

Thought it was a very strange way to present the author's name and thought perhaps they didn't sell well so publishers decided to cash in on making it more widely known that it was Sophie Kinsella. If you're going to do that, why not just stick to the one name?!

Agree that Becky in Shopaholic is infuriating and spoiled. Enjoyed the first book when I first read it but I think I then grew up and realised how irresponsible she is.

Mamabearx4 · 31/08/2018 14:19

I have all of her books. Lucky enough to have a signed copy ofher latest "suprise me"..
The flim was alfuw, but im hoping for redemption as the are fliming for "can you keep a secret"

I like the escapism, not much time to read these days, but even only for 10 mins just gives somehead space somewhere else.

elliejjtiny · 31/08/2018 14:26

I love the Sophie kinsella books, especially the shopaholic ones Blush.

Film was awful though, really different to the book. Really hope they don't ruin can you keep a secret?

sleepsleepandmoresleep · 31/08/2018 14:27

I loved the first few when I first read them ten years ago. I read a thing with the author that said Ties the Knot was intended to be the end of the series and she wrote them that way.

She should have left them there IMO. The ones that followed made most people I know who've read them really dislike Becky.

I have to say I have read them all, but the last few have been garbage.

rainbowsandsmiles · 31/08/2018 14:28

They're making Can You Keep A Secret ? into a film?! Shock
Did not know that!

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/08/2018 14:28

I remember in one of them she was convinced everything would be ok as she'd win the lottery that Saturday, and then was disappointed when she didn't.
WTF?

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/08/2018 14:30

That said I enjoyed the first two or three, then they just got stupid and frustrating.

rainbowsandsmiles · 31/08/2018 14:36

Not sure I like the idea of Can You keep a Secret? being made into a film, I love that book!
They're going to make it crap, arent' they, like the Shopaholic film?! Grin
The films never live up to the books as I've always got a completely different picture in my head of the characters.
Jack Harper in my head dark, short hair, slightly rugged, crumpled (!) face but sexy and broad with it.
The film will probably have him floppy blonde haired and weedy or something. Grin
