Was the violence that caused this a serious offence? Sickening. Petition by Rachel Williams on change.org asking this. @cpsuk take domestic violence seriously in courts

I am just bumping this up so more people see it.

longwayoff · 30/08/2018 21:26

Thank you. Its outrageous, infuriating and depressing.

Can't believe how few responses. Hundreds upset about Kim Woodburn, quite rightly. Ditto Liam Gallagher and partner. But not this. Not famous. Not been on tv. Just another everyday story of woman battering.

That poor woman. The 'punishment' in no way reflects the seriousness of the injuries that lady suffered.

www.change.org/p/theresa-may-mp-review-licenses-given-to-perpetrators-of-domestic-violence-so-victims-are-protected

Just signed it so thought I would post a link. It's disgusting.

FASH84 · 31/08/2018 11:02

It's disgusting, unfortunately in my line of work I see similar sentences day in day out for similar and worse DV offences. It's not the police, it's not the CPS it's the sentencers. One guy was on a dv perpetrators programme (35 two and a half hour intensive sessions that would make him confront, analyse and address his abuse,) for a violent offence against partner, he was breached by his probation officer for failing to attend and being utterly dismissive of his offending behaviour/unwilling to engage in structured work, at that time he was awaiting further sentence for harassment of the same victim and breach of non molestation order. The judge decided to tie the breach and all pending matters together revoked (essentially cancelled) the previous order and gave him 50 hours community service for all of it (sessions are seven hours long so this would've literally taken less than eight sessions), because he said he was working. The only evidence he had was his own word and some handwritten 'invoices' as he was self employed. He then failed to attend for his community service, breached again, back to court, all replaced with a £200 fine which he could easily afford. So all of that victim's trauma was only worth £200 to that magistrate, the offending behaviour was not addressed. Surprise surprise a year later back in court for another violent offence against a new partner, luckily got a judge at crown, got custody and the perpetrator programme on licence.

Aprilsinparis · 31/08/2018 11:14

My H is a CPS and says, he gets the same people, time and time again for domestic violence. It obviously isn't a deterrent. They should go straight to prison, hard labour, and not for a few months but for at least ten years.

FASH84 · 31/08/2018 11:32

@Aprilsinparis we don't have hard labour, and there's no evidence long term sentences work to reduce DV without addressing the behaviour on a cognitive level, see the US system as an example they have even higher DV rates than we do despite long custodial sentences. What does work is a combination of custody or suspended sentences with accredited perpetrator programmes, these allow for full risk assessment and true knowledge of how dangerous the perpetrator is, each victim and all new partners regardless of whether they've been victims get a support worker (if they want, they can opt out as they've done nothing wrong) , the offences are disclosed to new partners and card are managed with a multi agency information sharing approach , sometimes just probation , police and victim worker, but can also include social workers, MARAC, MAPPA, mental health team and any other agency involved. That leads to effective safeguarding. But sentencers who are fully aware of these options just go for fines and community service, they can even give all three of the want to include additional punitive measures (that's the combination I've seen work best)

longwayoff · 31/08/2018 11:39

I suggest that a ten year sentence is an excellent deterrent if only for the ten years that the offender is forcibly removed from the company of vulnerable women children and animals. Ten years saved. Worth it. With a double sentence for any subsequent offence.

My thoughts exactly longwayoff

longwayoff · 31/08/2018 12:44

These sentences are ineffective cheapest option. Prisons are overflowing powder kegs, therapeutic options are fantastically expensive and, as I expect you know FASH as you work in the field, all support services are already at breaking point. I'm old now and have seen enough over the years to make me lose the compassion I once had for some offenders. Violent crimes against the most vulnerable should receive sentences that mirror society's revulsion.

MrsMozart · 31/08/2018 12:46

Bloody hell!

CardsforKittens · 31/08/2018 13:01

It's shocking. Men who assault women should always receive prison sentences. The sentencing guidelines need to be reviewed.

Baumederose · 31/08/2018 13:06

I thought guidelines had been changed so genuine action was now being taken?

What a fucking disgrace.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 31/08/2018 13:27

That's disgraceful, wtaf?

longwayoff · 31/08/2018 13:48

The creature that did this is named Robert Jenney. The case was reported in Daily Express amongst others. I dont know how to link to report.

I'm still hoping there will be a bit more fury about this. Its Sunday. How many DV offences last night? Are women - and some men, not trying to ignore them - going to keep on living like this forever? Such an everyday occurrence its barely noticeable.

OP posts:
BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 02/09/2018 12:07

How is it more acceptable to assault your partner than assault a stranger?

iloveruby · 02/09/2018 12:18

So do these cases go before magistrates? And if so, is it the case that magistrates have limited powers or are they just not using them?

longwayoff · 02/09/2018 12:18

I dont know breakfast but it seems the way it is. I dont know whether it reflects the home lives of magistrates? I doubt it. Maybe it's more austerity, prison being expensive. How can anyone look at those injuries and put a price on them? Its utterly disgusting.

Aah. Whoops. If you try to share via the link the headline on facebook is "Please help (your name)". I copied the link in instead. Don't want my FB friends to think that my very lovely husband needs a restraining order.

ParkheadParadise · 02/09/2018 12:21

This doesn't shock me sadly
My dd's partner regularly battered her. To be fair they battered each other.
The evil bastard went on to murder her. He walked free on a NOT PROVEN verdict.

longwayoff · 02/09/2018 12:31

O parkhead, Im so sorry that this has awakened that for you, that must be beyond difficult to live with.
