What has happened? Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon? Dogs suddenly seen to be allowed into shops, cafes, service station...I am not talking assistance animaks, just general dogs.
Now I am not adverse to dogs, but if a wet nose drew back the curtain as I was getting changed in a shop changing room, I would be miffed ( saw it happen!) And I don't see how dogs in cafes is hygienic. Dogs can be off putting to sacred of dog people. But I don't want to get into the why not...I just really want to know wh at I missed that resulted in this happening

I think it’s revolting that cafes and restaurants are starting to let them in 🤮

There’s no escape!

AmateurSwami · 30/08/2018 00:05

Yeah I think it’s all part of the hipster trend. Pugs wherever you turn. They’re cute and all, but so odd when you’re sat in a restaurant.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 30/08/2018 00:06

Can’t say I’ve noticed it myself but YANBU.

I love my dog very much but she’s an absolute dribbly minger who has no business being inside cafes and shops.

SemperIdem · 30/08/2018 00:08

I think it feeling sudden depends on where you live.

It is, and always has been, pretty normal in the countryside small towns. Less so in cities. I don’t see a particular issue with it, as long as the dogs are well behaved.

Chottie · 30/08/2018 00:08

I just hate it too. :(

IAmLordVoldemort · 30/08/2018 00:09

I agree.

I’m not a dog lover. Nor am I a dog hater. I leave them alone and prefer that they leave me alone.

I don’t like the trend of them being allowed everywhere. Not everyone likes dogs and not everyone wants to be around them.

SneakyGremlins · 30/08/2018 00:10

I don't like dogs but the only place I'm really fussed about them is in eateries. Gross.

Shops/parks/in town, eh, whatever.

NeepNeepNeep · 30/08/2018 00:10

Yes! This is definitely a thing I have noticed out shopping. Years ago the only dogs I saw in city centres were service dogs and even that was not very common. Now there are dogs everywhere. Has the rate of dog ownership gone up? Is this the effect of social media i.e. get a dog so I can post pictures of it??

SomethingOnce · 30/08/2018 00:11

They’re everywhere, and many more people who haven’t got a clue how to train dogs properly seem to own them. So you have dogs off the lead that jump up, lick faces (it’s not cute, it’s gross), snatch food and, worst of all, don’t have reliable recall.

And my god, do these people take offence if you don’t find their badly behaved pet as adorable as they do.

Liquoricelake · 30/08/2018 00:34

Here we go again. MN is never happier when it's moaning about dogs.

No I haven't noticed this phenomenon unfortunately, but I do love when I go on holiday and dogs are welcome. I don't tend to go on holiday with my two but I am still more likely to go into a business that advertises that it is because I enjoy seeing the dogs that are in there and I want to support dog friendly businesses.

Liquoricelake · 30/08/2018 00:42

I don't think that every café. restaurant. store should allow them because people with allergies or dog phobias need to shop and eat too, but so long as they are well behaved I don't see the problem with there being dog friendly shops and cafes. If they aren't well behaved then they and the owner should be made to leave.

Personally I am much more troubled by parents allowing their children to behave badly in restaurants e.g running around shrieking in restaurants and not even attempting to control them.

Stalmida · 30/08/2018 00:43

I love it when I can take my dog into a shop, pub or café. It means I can stop off on a walk and don't have to leave him outside, risking him being stolen. And as for unhygienic, it's not like he's sat on the table and his paws are no dirtier than people's shoes. He is obedient though and doesn't foist himself on everyone so I can understand the annoyance at badly behaved dogs.

Ariela · 30/08/2018 01:17

I also dislike the trend for not being able to recall your dog. If you can't, it should be on a lead.
Likewise if you are on a road your dog should also be on a lead.

bluemoonchances · 30/08/2018 01:20

Yes I noticed this at Cheshire oaks outlet centre, loads of dogs and people taking their dogs in the shops with them! My mum who is very allergic to dogs was not amused!

fattyboomboomboom · 30/08/2018 01:50

I've never noticed this. I have 2 dogs and only go to eat at very doggy places ie outdoor cafes in big rambling parks. Do you mean places like this too?

Pieceofpurplesky · 30/08/2018 02:10

The only time I have taken my dog shopping was to cheshire oaks blue - but only for 5not minutes as we called in for something on the way to Wales! Not to pick up crispy creme donuts of course
Other than a pub garden I would not take ddog to a pub/cafe etc however I live in the countryside and it's always happened - it's just pubs have changed to more food than just drinks

Sibsmum · 30/08/2018 09:13

I am wondering if it's a policy change by shops and cafes rather than an actual law or something.
Guess it might mean that sales increase because people do seem to like to take their dogs out rather than leave them at home or in the car, so now they can shop too. I suppose the dog prefers that too.
I am still not convinced about the hygiene aspect of dogs in food outlets though. Yes their paws are no dirtier than shoes, but they do shake, sending hair, dander and dirt into the air, and a lot do like to say a nosey hello leaving wet on your trousers and for deposits. I guess the owners have to be responsible for their dog's behaviour.

Why is it unhygienic to let dogs sit in cafes? Every time I’ve seen a dog in a cafe it’s just sitting there under the table. They’re hardly assisting with meal prep.

Is it therefore unhygienic to have a dog in your home at all? So ridiculous.

NameChangingParanoid · 30/08/2018 09:20

I love taking my dogs out with me & do so at every opportunity - don’t think it’s a “trend” though.

The four nearest pubs to me all accept dogs & serve food which means I don’t have to leave my dogs behind if I haven’t see them all day. They sit under the table & most people don’t notice they’re there but they prefer to be with me & means I’m not rushing home for them.

SerenDippitty · 30/08/2018 09:21

I’m a dog owner and I really can’t say that I have noticed a sudden increase in dog friendly places where I live.

marmaladecats · 30/08/2018 09:25

This made me laugh because I was in a v fancy cafe in central london not long ago when I suddenly got a waft of doggy breath/pedigree chum. I looked over to the next table and sitting on the bench doagnolly opposite me was a panting spaniel and it's owner. Not even on the floor! I don't effing want dog breath in my face when I'm having my morning earl grey...

IrianOfW · 30/08/2018 09:29

I have noticed it and as a dog owner I appreciate it. I can understand that some people don't like it but you can always vote with your feet. There are plenty of places that don't allow dogs. I believe Wetherspoons has just banned them (not that i ever took my dog in a Wetherspoons).

And I guess that if you own a pub or cafe the bottom line is what matters and when more and more people own dogs it makes sense to accommodate them.

SerenDippitty · 30/08/2018 09:31

My local Wetherspoons has never allowed dogs, not even in the outside areas.

Imamouseduh · 30/08/2018 09:31

I think it’s a decision based on good business sense actually, particularly in shops as opposed to cafes. Go to a rich area, dogs are allowed everywhere. Go to a deprived area, dogs allowed in hardly anywhere. People with the kind of (usually smallish) dogs that they take everywhere with them probably have more disposable income, so it makes sense to allow them in to boutiques, independent shops, etc. As a dog owner I patronise the stores that allow him in over the ones that don’t.

Cafes are different issue. I wouldn’t take mine in. I’d sit outside with him, but not inside because I understand others may not like it. Pubs I do take him in though.

Whatjusthappenedthere · 30/08/2018 09:32

You are just not properly dressed without taking your dog into Stamford these days. Grin
