Plane Rant

Why do "special diet" people get all their food about an hour earlier than everyone ekse??

Why don't people think to put their chairs back upright at meal times??

Why do people wait until the passengers finally get moving off the plane before they start getting their shit together in the fucking aisle so nobody can get passed??

Does flying bring out the megabitch in anyone else? I spend hours boiling over with fury on a flight, surely I can't be the only one

OP posts:
nocoolnamesleft · 29/08/2018 15:11

I fly very rarely, and find alternatives where possible. But it is very discriminatory to say that because of my disability I should not fly. Stop being disablist.

Andro · 29/08/2018 15:14

So if you set your legs to jam your knees at me, I'll be quoting the disability discrimination act at you

What do you propose tall people with long legs do then? They can't block the aisle constantly and they can't shrink to fit. Extra room isn't always available at short notice, s unless you're willing to swap seats...

nocoolnamesleft · 29/08/2018 15:22

Long legs are not a disability. Mobility impairment is. Lobby for more extra legroom spaces. Or don't travel, like people are suggesting disabled people don't travel. Or be uncomfortable for a few hours - I'd be in extra pain for about a week.

nocoolnamesleft · 29/08/2018 15:23

And no, of course I won't be taking up the exit extra leg room seat. I can't. You have to be able bodied.

Coldilox · 29/08/2018 15:24

What about those with disabilities that include bad knees? Whose disability trumps the other?

And the person behind you on a plane has no duty to uphold disability discrimination legislation.

LoniceraJaponica · 29/08/2018 15:31

I think there is an argument for planes to be able to provide seating for people with disabilities. But this would come with a cost .

Helpmeyouyetti · 29/08/2018 15:31

Oh you lot would have loved flying in the 80s then. I used to fly to the former ussr a lot. They used to shove all us fuckers in like cattle. Some standing and some sitting on the isles and Off we went.
Ahh the good old days.

Andro · 29/08/2018 15:34

I'm not suggesting they are a disability, but they're also not adjustable

Lobby for more extra legroom spaces.

He has, often!

Or don't travel, like people are suggesting disabled people don't travel.

He has to travel as part of his job, he always takes extra leg room/business/first if available but at short notice not always possible. People with disabilities have as much right to travel as anyone else, I also understand the frustration with achieving even minor adjustments - I've fought more than a few mini-battles on that front myself thanks to medical issues.

Or be uncomfortable for a few hours - I'd be in extra pain for about a week.

It's not a matter of being uncomfortable; it's a geometric fact that with his legs in the space allotted for a standard seat, the seat in front will not move.

Twotailed · 29/08/2018 15:37

surely you should be quoting it at the airline...? It’s not the fault of the poor tall person sitting behind you that there’s no space for them to put their legs. They can’t exactly remove them and tuck them in an overhead locker. It’s the fault of the airline that the seats aren’t far enough apart to ensure that you can recline comfortably without meeting the knees of the person behind.

M3lon · 29/08/2018 15:56

interested that people have experienced other still getting up after a request to remain seated.

We were at the front of a plane when a request to remain seated was put out so that a sick child could be taken off the plane first. Every single person stayed in their seats, and many wished the family well as they left first.

I wonder if its because it was a package holiday plane and everyone was coming from the same place? Might have inspired some additional empathy.

CheshireChat · 29/08/2018 16:57

We're flying tomorrow, shouldn't have read this thread as it's stressing me out Grin.

I really wish people would remember that not everyone has had loads of opportunities to fly so will take longer to get their bearings.

Yep, the propeller Antonovs where the cabin used to fill with mist.
At least back in those day you could smoke on board.

And the smoking! LOL. It was like a chimney in there. My high school boyfriend was from the USSR. On one flight, none of the seats in the back row would fold down, and this was seen as a bonus because then more people could cram in standing up. I have two scars on the backs of my hands from people running into me with lit cigarettes. But then, they would give me cigarettes by way of apology. Those were the days!

Gersemi · 29/08/2018 18:08

That's not going to go well, given that the DDA is no longer in force.

MarthasGinYard · 29/08/2018 18:10

'So if you set your legs to jam your knees at me, I'll be quoting the disability discrimination act at you.'

Reads as if you'd quite enjoy that

Gersemi · 29/08/2018 18:15

The duty to make reasonable adjustments falls on the airline, not other passengers. If you choose not to ask them to do so before you travel, you can't assume that other passengers will make unreasonable adjustments to accommodate you.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/08/2018 18:30

it is very discriminatory to say that because of my disability I should not fly

Good job nobody said that then, isn't it? I believe you were asked if you "have to fly" by a PP wondering if it was to do with work, but that's hardly the same thing

OneStepSideways · 29/08/2018 18:34

So if you set your legs to jam your knees at me, I'll be quoting the disability discrimination act at you

If you have a medical need to recline, you need to tell the airline in advance. It's the airline's responsibility to make reasonable adjustments for you, like ensuring there's an empty seat behind you or upgrading you free of charge.

What if the person behind you has arthritis in their knees? Or it's a parent with a small baby on their lap? (Babies under 2 don't have their own seat, they have a harness attached to the parent). You can't recline safely with a baby or toddler behind you. And I wouldn't recommend reclining with a small child behind you as most will persistently kick the seat-back, bang the tray or bang toys around despite being told not to.

If the person behind you is very tall, they have nowhere to put their legs! You physically won't be able to recline unless they put their legs in the aisle or sit with their knees against their chest. Quoting the disability act at a fellow passenger won't magically shrink their legs to allow you to recline. I wouldn't sit with my legs in the aisle, it's a trip hazard! I also don't think tall people should have to pay extra for an extra space seat if their legs fit with the seats upright.

MeOldBamboo · 29/08/2018 18:46

On a recent flight, the loud person opposite not only jumped up immediately upon landing to faff with their bags as I sat and waited calmly, but then farted in my face. That was pleasant!

ElainaElephant · 29/08/2018 18:46

The equality act replaced the disability discrimination act (and quite a few other acts) nearly 8 years ago, so if you are of the mindset where quoting discrimination legislation is your thing, you have some catching up to do.

I somehow doubt that there is provision in the act suitable for quoting to someone whose legs are long enough that it prevents your aeroplane seat from reclining, however.

nocoolnamesleft · 30/08/2018 01:55

No, reclining is a normal function which the seats are designed to perform. If you are unable to fit in a seat behind another seat functioning normally, you need to inform the airline in advance.

MorseandLewis · 30/08/2018 02:58

I once had an elderly lady get into bed with me at 4am on a flight. She was very disorientated and was jabbing me and shouting in a language I didn’t know. It took me and 2 crew to get her settled back down.

Gersemi · 30/08/2018 06:55

That doesn't work, nocoolnames. It's the person who needs the reasonable adjustment who needs to inform the airline because, as you have pointed out, having long legs is not a disability and the airline therefore has no duty to make reasonable adjustments for people with long legs.

Veganmedic · 30/08/2018 07:11

I normally try and stay chilled, more for my own sake than anyone else. Don't mind recliners although I'm short so I'm lucky in that respect. The only time I really hated it was on a flight back from America, about ten hours I think. Man in front told crew prior to take off that he wanted to sleep for whole flight and not to wake him for the meals. All fine, he's entitled to do so. However he reclined immediately after take off, again fine. When my first meal was served I asked the flight attendant to please ask him to move the seat back up- they refused and said they couldn't as he specifically told them not to wake him. As I'm on the bigger side my table wouldn't fully come out so I had to hold my tray and drinks at every meal or snack round. Plane was full so all the crew could offer me was their seat at meal times but that didn't have a table. Miserable flight. He did indeed sleep the whole way.
