Cancel the Notting Hill Carnival!

AIBU. This year police have confiscated 49 knives and 70 offensive weapons total, including ACID and stun guns plus one stabbing. Over 400 people were arrested, up from 313 last year and I am starting to wonder when enough will be enough.

The streets are left in a state after the event and the cost to taxpayer is astronomical. I feel like the Notting hill carnival has lost its way and turned into a breeding ground for opportunistic thugs. The thought that someone was wondering round with ACID, willing to throw it into a crowd and scar however many tens of people it sprayed on is beyond sick. We are quite happy to say terrorists are a major threat to Londoners but these groups are a MUCH worse threat to our daily lives and it's just too risky to have this event when we know it's going to attract these nasty individuals and gangs.

I'm totally not a fuddy duddy and appreciate that things like rubbish being left and dirty streets are always going to happen with big public festivals (like Brighton Pride) but Notting hill is just seeming to get more sinister each year.

Time to cancel the festival for 1 year, sit down and re think how this could be made into a ticketed festival in 2020. The price of the ticket will help pay for the extra policing and security, fencing and security around the cordoned off area and contribute towards charities the festival supports. Think Hyde park concerts in the park type event, we need to keep people safe.

" white people who knew it happened when they moved into the gentrified properties which were the slums considered only fit to rip off black tenants 50 years ago. "

Spot on.
Interesting documentary on Secret History of our Streets about this on YT.
They done the same in Deptford (once the Oxford Street of South London I kid you not) and the planners and architects got very rich and the working class were dispersed . Same with Notting Hill , You who moved in there, you wouldn't have been seen in such areas once upon a time .

Before Grenfell..............A Hidden History is a good watch as well.

Leesa65 · 28/08/2018 14:44

Thanks Helena Dove not seen that one .

HermioneWeasley · 28/08/2018 14:49

I’m old enough to remember when the area was much more mixed (real no go areas and heroin/ crack dens) and carnival was dangerous. Then early 90s there was a real combined effort between community and police and it go a lot better

Carnival has been going on for decades- long before most residents of the area. It’s important

IrmaFayLear · 28/08/2018 14:59

White people are hardly colonising a "black" area. Those properties were built in Georgian times.

People can live where they like.

Leesa65 · 28/08/2018 15:05

Nobody SAID they were colonising a "black" area but along came money

How many mega rich black people , originally from the area, do you know in million pound PLUS houses there now ???

Leesa65 · 28/08/2018 15:07

Don't take my word for it !
MONEY changed the area and now some of you are whining ? Typical .,

JillCrewesmum · 28/08/2018 15:08

What made it 'trendy' originally was largely Carnival

I'm pretty sure this isn't the case. I remember when it started to become fashionable - good restaurants opening there (not Caribbean) had a lot to do with it. It was Boho from the 80s onwards and now its full of Americans.

serbska · 28/08/2018 15:09

@picklepost do you know where can I watch secret history of out streets? It’s not on I player any more

argentino · 28/08/2018 15:10

My poor parents have to board up their beautiful home and pay someone to housesit. They went to Paris for the weekend and were anxious the entire time.

Leesa65 · 28/08/2018 15:18

Bluelady · 28/08/2018 15:21

my heart bleeds for them

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 28/08/2018 15:35

I went down there in the mid 80s once or twice to score a bit of hash..:)

you just stood on the corner and after a short while someone would come along and sell you hash...
it seemed a v random kind of a place - once we were sitting in a shop doorway and this chap pulled in in a car and gave us all an Erasure single...

argentino · 28/08/2018 15:37

Bluelady not sure why you're being facetious. I don't think two people (in their seventies) fearing for their property is exactly a laughing matter.

CarolDanvers · 28/08/2018 15:38

I have to say @argentino, I did wonder if you were taking the piss.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 28/08/2018 15:39

So did I.

serbska · 28/08/2018 15:39

@Leesa65 thanks! I pasted the wrong username!

Will watch on you tube :-)

Leesa65 · 28/08/2018 15:42

Most welcome serbska

argentino · 28/08/2018 15:50

My parents were incredibly stressed that their property was going to be damaged in some way (two years ago their bedroom window was smashed for absolutely no reason). The intimidation and anti-social behaviour they have been subjected to in previous years meant that they felt it necessary to vacate the property and visit my sister for the weekend. What is so unbelievable about that?

Maybe if I uploaded the photo my mother sent me this morning of the pavement in front of her house you'd all be a bit more sympathetic.

wafflyversatile · 28/08/2018 15:55

Track any million people over 48 hours and at least one of them will be dead, many will have knives, loads will have smoked weed, played music too loud and pissed in a doorway.

Ticketing is an especially crap idea.

Ihavethepower · 28/08/2018 15:56

I doubt it.

Ihavethepower · 28/08/2018 15:57

That was to argentino.

argentino · 28/08/2018 16:03

Ihavethepower

What do you doubt?
