every single time we walk into that shop we argue so bad i think a divorce is on the cards. Then when we get home and have to build the crappy furniture with their sub standard instructions we have yet another row. currently sulking whilst my husband is swearing and crashing about. please tell me it’s not just us!

No, it's a marriage saver for us.We have an Ikea a couple of miles and we often go for a cheap date night! Plonk dc in playzone for an hour and sit and have adult conversation with DH over free coffee and meatballs :)

Everyoneiswingingit · 27/08/2018 20:45

Never shop on an empty stomach! Rule 1.

LexieLulu · 27/08/2018 20:46

If it wasn't for an Ikea row, I wouldn't have had my second child 😂🙈

We argued the whole way around the store as my DH changed his mind on the number of kids he wanted and I was so upset (I think it was started looking at cots).

I'm sorry his thread made me laugh and cringe at the thought of me stomping around calling my DH everything

Hidillyho · 27/08/2018 20:56

ODFOD

Ikea is the shop of gods Grin
DP won’t take me though so I have to scrounge lifts with others and then pay delivery for any large items I want.
Croydon one is near Costco. It’s like a dream

caoraich · 27/08/2018 21:00

Ha VoluptuaSneezelips a friend bought me that mug because I love Ikea so much! For balance she also got me the matching "work" mug...
Both currently in the dishwasher but available here...

We hate that place with a passion, we usually nip in for 1 thing and end up wasting our entire day buying a car full of shite that we didn't need and have nowhere to put. Last thing we bought was a load of kallax shelves (we did actually need them), building them nearly ended in divorce.

Ansumpasty · 27/08/2018 21:03

YABU. I get excited butterflies on my way to Ikea. Then meatballs. Then a hogdog for the ride home. Yes, I’m a sad bast**d but no, don’t shut IKEA down

toomuchtooold · 27/08/2018 21:20

Somebody tried to reverse over me in the Brent Cross IKEA loading bay. Despite that, I still love it Grin We just stick the kids in Smaland and then wander through the displays trying to imagine what it would be like to live in one of those show rooms and be childless and be able to buy things that don't have to be washable and then we end up buying yet another Kallax shelf. There's only three pieces of furniture in our house that aren't IKEA - one of them was in our old house when we bought it and the other two were a result of our short flirtation with Heal's when it looked like we might not be able to have kids, and we experimented with what it might be like to just have tons of disposable income and time instead. Then once we spent 3 grand on a cream carpet for upstairs, of course the IVF worked and the first thing we did was buy 2 SNIGLAR cots and a giant rug to go under them to try and protect the bloody thing from the endless puke of small babies.

Come the zombie apocalypse I'm hiding out in Ikea.

Few windows
Rooms set up for comfort
Years supply of meatballs to keep us going
Costco is across the road so I'll dig a tunnel and have all the good I'll ever need

Don't you lot go stealing my plan!

Suewiang · 27/08/2018 21:40

Most entertainment I had from ikea was going with my sister and niece and after seeing the rubbish I mean wonderful items she bought I had a joke in my mind.
I made a excuse to go back in the shop and I purchased 4 packets of the various screws dowels and gromits that are invariably missing.
Then on arriving to her home she unpacked the items in each room and put the bits into a tray ready to make each,so I had my chance and added extra to each without her seeing and sat back to wait for the puzzled and ultimate anger in not finding where the extra bits went.
She built and took apart a chest of draws 4 Times. Then my niece told tales on me lol

aperolspritzplease · 27/08/2018 21:45

I love watching arguments round ikea, it's a great way to kill a couple of hours on a rainy day!!

LemonysSnicket · 27/08/2018 21:47

We don't argue in IKEA or when building... but we both LOVE IKEA, it's a great day out

icecreamcrackers · 27/08/2018 21:49

My husband has his own business building Ikea flat pack, he is brilliant and can build their massive wardrobes by himself.

Still results in arguments between us though.

5000KallaxHoles · 27/08/2018 21:59

Think my user name states my policy on Ikea fairly clearly. I bloody love Kallax.

Having said that - avoid weekends, avoid bank holidays... go online first and get the aisle/row locations for what you're after, use the shortcuts like mad and get in and out in under 15 minutes is my current personal best (was buying 2 kallax units at the time)... get 'em in the car and get back in for a bargain breakfast... job done.

Why do you all like Ikea?
What's wrong with good quality secondhand collectable furniture?

SoupDragon · 27/08/2018 22:55

What's wrong with good quality secondhand collectable furniture?

People all like different things. That is all

StringandGlitter · 27/08/2018 22:56

I like putting up IKEA furniture! I did four Billy bookcases in one afternoon and thought it was quite fun.

Petalflowers · 27/08/2018 22:58

You can’t beat a Billy bookcase!

AnEPleaseBob · 27/08/2018 23:00

I don't want (and can't afford) good quality collectable second hand furniture. I do want and can afford good quality Ikea furniture. Whats wrong with that?

HoomanMoomin · 27/08/2018 23:07

YABFU

I always decide what I’m getting beforehand and put it all together myself. My DH is trying to create drama, but I have no time to argue, so take shit and run to the checkout.

I was on the breach of breakdown when trying to get the shelving unit into a tight space, but he wasn’t home at the time, so we didn’t divorce.

I prefer to go there with my sister. It’s almost serene experience with her. Grin

ScattyCharly · 27/08/2018 23:10

Ikea is better than good quality second hand collectible furniture for many reasons. You know exact measurements, you can decide you need something from Ikea and go pick it up immediately. No messing about, just get it and it will be very cheap. I just bought a large billy bookcase. I don’t have time to search for this mythical second hand quality stuff. Plus it isn’t flat packed and won’t go in the car. Ikea is for immediate need and items are highly practical.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 27/08/2018 23:11

Well, we love going and never argue. We don’t argue putting stuff together, either.

So I suggest you go elsewhere rather than shut it down! Grin

Well if I had money for stuff like that I’d buy it. But I don’t. And charity shops round my way just have second hand Ikea stuff anyway.

Not everyone has the time or money to go searching for the perfect item to go in their living room.

Titsywoo · 27/08/2018 23:15

I go on my own, during the week when the kids are at school. I use all the shortcuts or go through the exit if the stuff I need is at the end. Grab what I need and am in and out in under 30 mins. Anything else is madness.

Taffeta · 27/08/2018 23:17

We went this morning

It went how it always does

DH was unreasonable so I had leverage

So I went to John Lewis this afternoon and bought the armchair I’ve wanted for the last 6 months. DH capitulated through guilt

Most excellent outcome

Love Ikea Grin
