To ask if anyone has had blood clots in the lung treated (hand hold)

Have just been told I have multiple blood clots in my lungs and am getting moved to a respiratory ward. Bricking it a bit and need a serious hand hold and some positive stories Smile

My mum did.

She was put on epixoban and is fine.

Well, she isn't, but her not-fineness is nothing to do with the clots.

Good luck, you're in the right place.

My mum had it after a big op. They gave her a nuclear x-ray and moved her to the coronary care unit to monitor her, and she was referred to a specialist who came to see her. She was given blood thinners, and referred to an anti coagulant clinic for six months, it was all ok. Try not to worry - they've caught it and you will be fine.

Justaboutawake · 27/08/2018 15:29

I did! Multiple clots in both lungs and pneumonia when I was 24. Was kept in for a week, had loading dose of clexane for 2 weeks and was then on warfarin for a year.

Had some help breathing from a nebuliser for the first 3 days but didn’t need it once the clexane kicked in.

However, the recovery felt like it took forever. Stairs were an absolute bitch and so was any great change of weather.

You are in the best place and I’m sure you will be fine. Pretty easy to sort once they have found the problem and sorted drug dosage etc

SadTrombone · 27/08/2018 16:48

My Mam did - hospital treatment sorted it.

I did when I was pregnant with DD. They had me on enoxiparin and was on ventilation for a few days. All was good after a week or so.

Thanks for the success stories, not going to lie, a little bit scared and this helps.

Had 2 injections so far in my tummy, not sure what they are!

They're Clexane. Good stuff.

thefirstmrsdewinter · 27/08/2018 20:07

My mum had multiple clots in her lungs and legs from her bc chemo. She was in hospital for a while, then had daily self-injections, then was moved onto a blood thinner. She's fine now and they found no reason for it other than the chemo. Sorry you're going through this op, I hope your treatment is swift and effective. Flowers

Probably dalteparin. Just ask if you don’t know.

Rachie1986 · 27/08/2018 20:08

Yep my dad had 2 last year. Got on thinners and is doing just fine.

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 27/08/2018 20:08

Probablyfragmin injections.
Was treated for same thing age 34, now 39 and all fine. Had 5 major surgeries in past 2 years (totally unrelated to blood clots!) and just had to inject fragmin or heparin in the lead up and for couple of weeks after surgery.
I hope all goes well, if they have caught it now then you should be ok, try not to panic and just relax. Make sure you are ready to inject yourself as that will get you home quicker. Also get the details of sharps box removals or you will end up with the damn things everywhere! Thanks

JagerPlease · 27/08/2018 20:10

Not on the lungs but on the brain, as others have said, clexane injections in the stomach and then blood thinners longer term as well as visiting the clinic regularly for check ups. You can do this!

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/08/2018 23:17

Yes. 10yrs ago. I had a clot IN my leg which travelled to my lung and collapsed it Xmas day - and spent 2w In hospital including new year

Heperain and warafin sorted me out

Was told I was lucky as if hadn’t been treated I would have died as clot would have gone to my brain and would have been dead by nye

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/08/2018 23:19

You will bleed more due to medication so careful shaving

And certain foods will react - brocolli for one. Don’t eat too much

StormTreader · 28/08/2018 14:12

Had this twice - you'll be in the ward for about a week while your body breaks the clots down, and then be on bloodthinners for about 6 months probably.
Try and take it as easy as you can while on the ward and you should be fine. Expect to feel a bit wheezy and tired for a good year afterwards in my experience, it takes it out of you. You also might worry a bit when you get a cold that its something more sinister, it probably wont be - I was very alert to any feeling of wheeziness or reduced lung capacity but it was all normal colds etc and resolved in a few days.

What reaction?! Just seen this and had a huge plate of brocolli for tea!

Google the answers.

Scoogle · 28/08/2018 19:21

My husband had one. It was very serious, but like yours his was caught in time. Blood thinners for life and you will be knackered after. I had no idea about avoiding certain foods though . Is that because of the medication or the condition itself?

knockknockknock · 28/08/2018 19:23

@Scoogle I think the avoiding certain foods etc only applies to people on warfarin as my mum had to stay clear of stuff but now she's on Apixaban she can have anything.

knockknockknock · 28/08/2018 19:24

@zigzagbetty Do you know what's caused them??

Sammy867 · 28/08/2018 19:31

I had one in January aged 29. Right lung clot with infarct (it was an end so part of the lung died off)
I was given rivaoxaban on a higher dose for 3 weeks then on it life long at maintenance dose. Had all of the genetic testing and just appears to potentially have been the combined pill as all clotting and tests came back normal but my gp recently swapped my combined pill for a different brand as it was cheaper (was on microgynon for 10 years previous to this with no problems)
My symptoms were back pain and my Fitbit was reading my heart rate at 140 and the gp sent me for a scan. I was treated as an outpatient and saw the haematologist only as follow up for testing. I tracked my heart rate lowering over the next few weeks with my Fitbit and it was really interesting obviously as the clot dissolved and my heart didn’t need to work as hard.
Long term treatment is fine for me; one pill once a day and no long term risks of repeated clots (most prevalent in first year), can eat and drink whatever I want and bar some slight bruising if I get hit too hard and some heavier periods I’ve had no other problems

starfishmummy · 28/08/2018 19:40

The green veg thing will be OK on some blood thinners.

But even on warfarin as long as you are consistent with them and have your regular blood tests they can take them into account. The thing is not to suddenly start having more or less.

Numberofthemouse · 28/08/2018 20:00

Lots of confusing info here. OP, please speak to your nurses/ doctors as there's a lot of not quite right medical info here.
Clexane/ frragmin /dalteparin are all types of low molecular weight heparin (anticoagulation). They are injected under the skin.
Warfarin is now quite old fashioned, however if you take it your intake of green leafy vegetables needs to be consistent (as the vit k in them antagonises it).
Rivaroxiban, apixiban, dabigatran are newer oral anticoagulants and more likely what you will be offered.

You need to speak to your medical team about further investigations and duration of anticoagulation.
