To be genuinely/generally annoyed? (Light hearted... sort of!!)

A person in my office keeps saying "generally" when what they mean in "genuinely" ... it drives me crazy every time!

I know, I know,I should pull them up on it but I don't want to make them feel daft , or come across as condescending, so I inwardly seethe instead!

AIBU for getting so annoyed?! Grin

What drives you mad similar to this?

I quite like stuff like that even though it's annoying Grin

FASH84 · 27/08/2018 12:23

When people use words incorrectly I like to take them at their literal meaning, and respond to that. Eg 'yes it's so frustrating when you can't pinpoint a specific thing you are annoyed at but just feel generally irritated' , watch their confusion

whiskeysourpuss · 27/08/2018 12:25

One of the guys comes into my office & says "Reference.." whenever he needs to talk to me about something it sets my teeth on edge & I have to really concentrate to keep my face under control

bluemoonchances · 29/08/2018 09:40

She just did it again ConfusedConfusedConfusedConfused biting through my tongue now!!

My teen dd does this. I correct her everytime as it drives me insane....she just rolls her eyes at me 😠

Bestseller · 29/08/2018 09:44

Persific is the one that gets me

WatchedTooMuchBrookside · 29/08/2018 09:47

My friend always uses defiantly instead of definitely.

cookiesaurus · 29/08/2018 09:49

I've recently joined some local resale sites and I had no idea people mistakenly refer to drawers as draws - it seems to be a regular occurrence!

samanthalou · 29/08/2018 09:50

WatchedTooMuchBrookside I have a friend who does this and it really irritates me.

She also says pacific instead of specific.

I just want to staple things to her forehead when she does it!

BusterTheBulldog · 29/08/2018 09:54

I have a pacific / specific saying work colleague - I feel your pain!!!

SeaViewBliss · 29/08/2018 09:56

My DH says this thing that bugs the hell out of me.

He mixes up 'gets on my nerves' and gets my goat' he says

'it gets on my goat'! It's so funny to hear but also annoying!

My MIL says Choclit which my whole family know winds me up so they all now say it on purpose.

And everyone in my house knows I am obsessed with should of would of could of and also say those things to annoy me.

Maybe I annoy them with how much these things annoy me! Grin

sazzle92 · 29/08/2018 09:56

My old manager used to constantly misuse "brought" and "bought"....
She was someone who could never take criticism, and i had a mini party when she retired..

The best bit? We worked in marketing and she prided herself on her grammar/proofreading!! HmmConfused

POPholditdown · 29/08/2018 09:57

Two people I’ve worked with/for used to say ‘genetically speaking’ instead of ‘generally’.

AglassOfWine · 29/08/2018 10:01

I know this is kind of a different thing! But my old boss used to say 'let's touch base' ALL. THE. TIME. !!! Drove me bananas!

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 29/08/2018 10:03

My husband gets been and being mixed up.

Cantrememberthistime123 · 29/08/2018 10:08

When I first read this I thought there was a possibility it could be me! 🙈😂

Luckily I’m off today so no chance it can be.

I always do this, I know the difference but but can’t help it. It just slips out wrong mid conversation.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/08/2018 10:10

I had a work colleague who had a terrible habit of finishing every single sentence with "is that okay, then?" Even when it made no sense whatsoever in the context of what she was saying. She also used to say 'myself' instead of 'me' which was just bloody odd...

Kim82 · 29/08/2018 10:14

Another with a work colleague who says Pacific instead of specific. Same colleague also says SAAP instead of ASAP. It makes me cringe every time.

Gettingbackonmyfeet · 29/08/2018 10:14

I am honestly far from being pedantic over wording

However I had a CEO who said Pacific rather than specific and oh god it gave me the rage

Intelligent accomplished woman who had done some amazing things and genuinely made the world a better place...but she sounded like a two year old when she did that !

HidingFromMyKids · 29/08/2018 10:16

Someone on my local site was selling

cariadlet · 29/08/2018 10:22

My DD always says "brought" when she means "bought". I think she's picked it up from my MIL.

I correct her every time but she still does it. This has been going on for years now. Maybe it's time to admit defeat. 😞

GreatWesternValkyrie · 29/08/2018 10:25

I work with someone who says mute point and tenderhooks - both of these make me slightly twitchy but even worse, because the person is quite senior, a couple of her team have now started copying her so they’re all muting points and tenderhooking! Argh! Grin

My favourite though is a friend of a friend who apparently kept mentioning crudites (to rhyme with Luddites) - that one has stuck!

LaContessaDiPlump · 29/08/2018 10:25

I work in a technical writing field with some very very precise people. Terms like this, when used on the writers' floor, cause mass intakes of breath and some interested subdued rage responses. We hates it, we does Grin

LaContessaDiPlump · 29/08/2018 10:26

*interesting, dammit!

HansSolo22 · 29/08/2018 10:27

It really annoys me when people say expresso instead of espresso. Especially when they work in a very well known coffee shop!!
