To be genuinely/generally annoyed? (Light hearted... sort of!!)

A person in my office keeps saying "generally" when what they mean in "genuinely" ... it drives me crazy every time!

I know, I know,I should pull them up on it but I don't want to make them feel daft , or come across as condescending, so I inwardly seethe instead!

AIBU for getting so annoyed?! Grin

What drives you mad similar to this?

I see time and time again on selling sites "Foot Stall" instead of Footstool. Confused

I also know a few people who type "his" instead of "he's", eg, "His watching TV at the moment". Really gets on my nerves! Grin

itssquidstella · 29/08/2018 10:33

DP mixes up 'relish' and 'revel in' and talks about 'relishing in' something. I correct him every time!

I've heard this elsewhere, I don't think it's just him, but it winds me up!

PrincessAvaR · 29/08/2018 10:34

Rest bite instead of Respite!

MereDintofPandiculation · 29/08/2018 10:36

Painting "Muriels" on walls.

codenameduchess · 29/08/2018 10:52

I worked with a girl once who constantly said ' well obviously...' she worked in complaints too, it's of was obvious you wouldn't have to say it!!

My dh says 'ever rest' instead of Everest, usually not an issue but DD is obsessed with paw patrol so it comes up often.

You could casually use it correctly?

RestingBitchFaced · 29/08/2018 11:24

I used to work with someone that always said 'Indeed' after someone else had spoken. Used to really annoy me.

Also she used to answer the phone like this 'Hello, good morning/afternoon speaking, how can I help? Repeat whole sentence in Welsh ' before she let the other person get a word in. Used to make me laugh when it was one of those recorded messages or someone enquiring about the electric company 😂

SeaViewBliss · 29/08/2018 15:12

I've just thought of another one slightly sideways of topic.

I have worked with 2 different people who say the last word or two of your sentence a millisecond after you say it.

It's as if they want to make sure you know they know what you are talking about or something?

Nikephorus · 29/08/2018 15:18

She also says pacific instead of specific.
Now I'd have to indulge myself and ask ocean-related questions as if I genuinely (or generally!) thought she was referring to the pacific ocean. Oh the fun you can have Grin

bluemoonchances · 29/08/2018 15:38

@HansSolo22 that's my DH pet hate!

The specific/Pacific thing annoys me too. Glad I'm not alone! Grin

We have these little china people scattered around my house. My husbabd calls them ‘ordaments’. I think normal people call them ‘ornaments’. He doesn’t like to be corrected!

Oh and to him, ‘drawers’ are ‘draw-ers’, with the emphasis on the ‘ers’ bit. Weirdo.

Bloodybridget · 29/08/2018 15:45

People who say/write I when it should be me - presumably because they think it sounds correct. E.g. "She took my friend and I out for lunch". Journalists, radio broadcasters, novelists, they all do it, the utterly infuriating, ignorant nitwits.

HaveSomeGrace · 29/08/2018 15:46

@HidingFromMyKids

Oh that’s so funny!!!!! 😂

crenellations · 29/08/2018 15:49

His led down on that sofa which is for sell.

I think that covers my worst ones!

BlackrockMum · 29/08/2018 15:50

I had a colleague who always said pacifically speaking, I tried for years to get him to say specifically but I couldn't

Whatsthisbear · 29/08/2018 15:59

Someone at work who always writes/says “could of” instead of could have.
I was offered a bag el once instead of a bagel Confused and a waitress repeated my order back to me to confirm I wanted the fageetas when I ordered fajitas Grin

rebelrosie12 · 29/08/2018 16:00

Yeah, 'led down' is the worst and people where I live seem to be convinced it's correct.
Also, 'myself' when it should be 'me' makes me rage. Usually someone trying to sound smarter than they are and failing.

TinoBeans · 29/08/2018 16:14

@PrincessAvaR I see the opposite!

e.g, little Tommy loves playing with he's cars

Apostrophe and everything! Gives me the rage!!!!

LikeLemondrops · 29/08/2018 16:16

Someone I know posted about how they were fed up with 'been made a escape goat' - I had to bite my tongue pretty hard at that!

PrincessAvaR · 29/08/2018 16:16

@TinoBeans GrinGrinGrin Yeah I've seen that too!

PrincessAvaR · 29/08/2018 16:18

My DP says psketti for spaghetti! Really annoys me and have to correct him all the time. Even my DC have never said psketti!! Grin

GreatWesternValkyrie · 29/08/2018 16:21

'been made an escape goat'

That’s marvellous - I want to use that Grin

Tinkerbellisnotafairy · 29/08/2018 16:28

@Seaviewbliss - Yes, sentence repeaters! It's so annoying! I know what I want to say, I don't need help thank you!

People writing "ect" instead of "etc" gives me the rage too.

And mixing up "formerly" and "formally".

Oh, and people pronouncing "misCHEEVEEous" instead of "MISchievous".

gobbynorthernbird · 29/08/2018 16:32

I know far too many people who want just a slither of (eg) cake

n0ne · 29/08/2018 17:42

I know it shouldn't bug me because their English is far FAR better than my Dutch, but it winds me up when the Dutchies I work with say upstairs and downstairs instead of up and down, whatsoever instead of whatever and REport instead of rePORT. But I dread to think what atrocities I come out with in their language!

Earslaps · 29/08/2018 20:12

Where I grew up people are utterly insistent that the past of show is shew- "he shew me that".

Always drove me slightly bonkers. I remember telling a friend it wasn't a real word and she was adamant it was. So I asked her how to spell it and she couldn't tell me as she'd never seen it written down. Funny that Hmm

Judging by Facebook groups there are many people with very little knowledge of spelling and grammar- long spiels with no punctuation, incorrect use of tenses ("I seen him") and getting similar sounding words mixed up ("I said I wouldn't except that"). To be fair to them most people were not taught any grammar at school and some people never read newspapers or books to have an idea of how to write.

I do think the level of grammar we are expecting children to know at primary level is crazy (bloody fronted adverbials!!) but I do agree with them learning parts of speech.
