Titled with Across in mind Wink

May all the Oaf's problems be big ones, and the events of this week at least be the beginning of the beginning of the end.

Whoever it is next to Mattis, behind the exPOTUS row, is giving BO the evils in that sweetie sharing gif. (You can't see Mattis' face, but I recognised the hair!)

He’s fine thanks, cozie, over his suspected Pox and now back to being a typical 17 month old - into absolutely everything!

mimi I can't find a clear picture of the person next to Mattis, but there's bound to be quite a few Secret Service agents in the pews. Could it be the 'eagle eye' instead of the 'evil eye'?

I wondered about Ivanka being there, too. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that her attendance was the carrot in front of Trump's ass donkey, that she could attend 'in his place'. Although I seem to remember Meaghan mentioning on the view that she and Ivanka used to be, if not friends, then 'social acquaintances' so perhaps it was for the sake of a 'friendship'.

It is just so unprecedented that a sitting president is purposefully excluded from such an occasion. At least, if it's happened before it's been smoothed over as 'due to security concerns' or 'conflicting schedule'. NEVER is it 'we told the prick to stay the fuck away'.

It makes me wonder what will happen when Scrotus dies. Hopefully conscience will trump (no pun intended) protocol and the current POTUS & former POTUSes (POTI?) will stay away. They did attend Nixon's, but although he was a crook, he was not the repugnant asshole that Scrotus is.

AcrossthePond55 · 01/09/2018 21:30

Ah! Here we go:

www.mercurynews.com/2018/09/01/why-were-ivanka-trump-and-jared-kushner-at-john-mccains-memorial-service/

New York Times White House correspondent Katie Rogers tweeted that GOP Senator Lindsey Graham had asked Ivanka Trump, a White House senior advisor, to attend when they met on Capitol Hill earlier this week and the first daughter shared her condolences. A White House official told Rogers that Graham thought it would be “a nice gesture” for her and her husband, also a White House senior advisor, to attend.

The official said that the South Carolina senator cleared it with McCain’s wife, Cindy McCain, first.

But their presence at the service was widely criticized by people on Twitter, making their names top trending topics as McCain’s family and friends and national political leaders listened to the eulogies and scripture readings. Some tweeted that Graham’s request of Cindy McCain, and Ivanka Trump’s decision to attend, lacked class and was “inappropriate".

Graham's an asshole. I'm sure he didn't 'ask' Cindy. He probably badgered her.

At least Ivanka and wet lettuce Jared were sat in the back

CanadianJohn · 01/09/2018 21:43

On Nafta:

I've just written to the Prime Minister of Canada, to add my voice to the many who are urging Canada not to give in to the bullying from the White House.

I simply cannot believe that a head of state is insulting a sovereign nation so blatantly as Trump. This afternoon, he apparently tweeted that Congress should not interfere in the Nafta negotiations - does he have no understanding at all of how the US government works.

Unfortunately, Canada is 1/10 the size of the US, and any retaliation action we take is likely to hurt us more than them. Our negotiators may - or may not - have been double-crossed by Mexico, and hood-winked by the US, but I don't envy them the task of trying to negotiate with a six-year-old.

This is an interesting exchange and the tone deaf, graceless, comment from Cuccinelli (President of Senate Conservatives Fund;Senate Conservatives Action; former Virginia Attorney General) elicits a response he should heed (but will not):

The version of the GOP that you have been part of and continue to support were publicly shamed today and that was for the good. The good of the nation ; the good of politics ; the good of decency.

Ted Davis
@TedDavisSAV
Without uttering the words Donald Trump, ⁦**@MeghanMcCain** indicts the current president:⁩ “We gather here to mourn the passing of American greatness -- the real thing, not cheap rhetoric from men who will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly." #McCainMemorial

@KenCuccinelli
@TedDavisSAV, and @MeghanMcCain

It's too bad she can't participate in a funeral instead of lobbing political hand grenades.

@PortiaMcGonagal
You are exactly the problem that was discussed today. I disagree with Meghan McCain politically but as a daughter who had to eulogize my father, a man who also stood for duty and honor and expected me to stand strong, I stand w/ her today. On a day when you have to 1/3
summon every ounce of strength you have, you get to say what you need to say. If my father had been maligned for political gain and in such a petty and truculent way as her father has been by Trump, I would have considered it my duty to address that in his eulogy. 2/3
The version of the GOP that you have been part of and continue to support were publicly shamed today and that was for the good. The good of the nation ; the good of politics ; the good of decency.

This is about yesterday but an excoriating comment on McConnell, Ryan and Pence's hypocrisy.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/opinions/wp/2018/08/31/three-men-unfit-to-eulogize-mccain/

To call McCain a hero is to recognize his heroic qualities, of which Trump has none. You can worship Trump or admire McCain; it’s metaphysically impossible to do both. Meghan McCain’s glare was an appropriate reaction to Pence’s hypocrisy.

But what does McConnell stand for? He has accommodated Trump, ignoring or rationalizing his worst behavior. McConnell personally destroyed the comity in the Senate by denying Judge Merrick Garland a hearing and then extinguishing the filibuster for Supreme Court justices. He has refused to protect the rule of law by preventing a bill protecting the special counsel from reaching the floor. In short, he too is everything McCain is not, and has presided over the very changes in the Senate that McCain despised.

Instead of the causes dear to McCain: the rule of law, simple decency, the obligation to defend the country against abuses of power — Ryan has again and again taken the road of least resistance. He is quite simply a moral coward.

I suppose having this trio speak was the trade-off for allowing McCain to lie in state. In singing his praises, however, they demonstrated just how small, how weak they are. In the shadow of a giant like McCain, they should feel a pang of shame.

I might have known Graham invited Javanka. He is a weak toad. I did wonder if his courting of Trump had an ulterior motive but I don't think he's that principled.

www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/with-batman-gone-it-seems-robin-has-taken-up-with-the-joker/2018/08/31/17ea3216-ad37-11e8-a8d7-0f63ab8b1370_story.html

No longer protected by McCain, he seems to have lost that famous McCain courage. It is difficult to avoid the impression that, since McCain’s illness, he has found a new patron. “I never did anything politically of consequence without John,” Graham acknowledged this week. “I mean all of the big stuff, campaign finance, climate change, Iraq, you name it. I was by John’s side. I was his wingman.”
Yet, now, he is serving as wingman to a president who takes the opposite view on each of those issues.

the bit of the above link made me chuckle

"with Batman gone Robin has taken up with the Joker"

Graham is a consummate toady. He picks a stronger man (like McCain) or a more powerful man (like Scrotus) and is content to slink around in their shadow. Despicable.
