To think that’s if you are potty training then use a potty rather than the pavement

Saw a parent letting their little girl wee on the pavement of a Main Street in town today. Right in front of TK Maxx. What happened to taking a potty with you?
For both my kids I had one of those portable potty’s that you add a liner too- we took it everywhere when we were potty training.
If it was an adult weeing outside TK Maxx then there would be an outcry- why is it ok to let kids wee anywhere?
Aibu?

I think using a potty in the street is pretty grim too tbh but a step better than just weeing - how is that meant to teach your child how to use the toilet?

YeTalkShiteHen · 24/08/2018 14:47

Presumably the people you saw didn’t have a potty, so it wasn’t a choice was it?

Musicforthemasses18 · 24/08/2018 14:50

It’s on a Main Street in a busy town. There’s a McDonalds about 100 yards away.

So why are you banging on about a portable potty then?

DiegoMadonna · 24/08/2018 14:52

It's not ideal. But it's highly doubtful that the parent/s thought it was ideal either, tbf.

RB68 · 24/08/2018 14:54

We had a portapotty with liners which just have an absorbent pad and are inside a bag (think is a bag with handles that slips over potty - when done its no worse than a dirty nappy so into changing bag fold up potty and you are off. But we only used it for car journeys or where we knew there was no loos. Public loos are in short supply these days and then there is the issue of cleanliness. So it was there if we needed it and hand wipes after or gel these days

RB68 · 24/08/2018 14:55

Also we always found a quite corner rather than in middle of street

Ignoranceisblissforsome · 24/08/2018 14:56

I couldn’t get worked up about this. Sometimes things happen and you are caught off guard. I.e walk past public toilet, say to child do you need a wee? Reply no mummy.
Two minutes later mummy I need a wee NOW!
And when no one huffs about a dog weeing on pavement I couldn’t stress about a toddler doing it.

ParkheadParadise · 24/08/2018 14:56

It's been 20+ years since I last potty trained. About to start with Dd2.
Do people honestly carry a potty about outside?

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 24/08/2018 14:57

We've had to do that maybe twice. It was after the stage where we took a potty with us but ds was young enough that he made a mistake! It would have taken 10 mins to get to a public loo and that would have been about 8 minutes too long! What can you do? 🤷🏻‍♀️

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 24/08/2018 14:58

Hmm as much as I would have liked to carry a potty around with me and my three under three, I just didn't give a shit.

It's toddler piss. Should dog owners carry around potties too or are dogs known for their lovely smelling wee?

Missingstreetlife · 24/08/2018 14:58

People don't remind their children to go before they go out, and at regular intervals when it's convenient, they drink pop all day and then get caught short. Obviously everyone has the odd incident but it really feels like children's needs are not taken into account

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 24/08/2018 14:59

Also public toilets are fucking vile near me and where all the users go. My children have literally never been in one. Tree it is if they can't hold it in

Ignoranceisblissforsome · 24/08/2018 15:00

I’ve never done it parkhead I think the idea is a bit unhygenic carrying it round tbh.
And like I say no one ever kicks up a fuss about the hygiene aspect of a dog weeing outside on the floor.
Whenever ds has had to go I’ve always tried to make is as discrete as possible. I probably wouldn’t choose outside of primark. But maybe the child really couldn’t hold any longer.

BeautifulPossibilities · 24/08/2018 15:00

So you want someone to use a portable potty with a liner in it- which is made from plastic to stay on the earth for god knows how many years? Or a bit of toddler wee which will no doubt wash away in the rain?

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 24/08/2018 15:01

Hmm yeah, everyone else is just failing at parenting. Hmm

I don't remember the last time I saw a potty training age child with a can of pop, and I think all parent know to ask their children to go to the toilet before they leave. Tiny bladders.

TheDarkPassenger · 24/08/2018 15:01

Absolutely would not be carrying a potty around with me - sorry!

Kewqueue · 24/08/2018 15:03

I think dog owners should wash it away actually (and some responsible ones do). It stinks in the summer if it stays on pavements.

ParkheadParadise · 24/08/2018 15:03

Me too

Maybe they couldn't afford to buy anything and some shops won't let you use the toilet without a purchase.

Maybe they didn't want a fight about buying anything with their child.

Maybe 100 yards is an actually a huge distance to a toddler who is about to piss themselves.

QueenAravisOfArchenland · 24/08/2018 15:03

Do people honestly carry a potty about outside?

I did during the period between DS1 using the potty and getting over his fear of the toilet, yes. Although I always used it in the toilet if possible. I've certainly missed buses because of an emergency "mummy I need a poo" announcement.

Sometimes a "wild wee" is going to happen (we had to pull over on a country drive not so long ago) but I don't think I'd ever just go in the middle of town. Cafes and shops have always been very sympathetic to "where's your toilet, TODDLER EMERGENCY".

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 24/08/2018 15:04

I have never seen that in my life.

MrsGB2225 · 24/08/2018 15:05

What’s the difference between a child weeing in the street or a dog weeing? Dogs wee in the street all the time!

WindyWednesday · 24/08/2018 15:06

Potette. Biodegradable liners. Folds up in a bag. Perfect for emergencies.

Racecardriver · 24/08/2018 15:08

If they were in a shopping district there must have been loads of places where they could use the loo. The parent is clearly just dirty and lazy.
