Can't decide if this would make me a twat or not....

Two weeks ago we bought our dream home in a small cup de sac. It hadn't been for sale on the open market so no for sale sign.

The house has spent much of the last 10 years let continuously to short term tenants who haven't really looked after the place. The gardens especially have been left to grow a bit wild which is a shame as it's a bit of a feature in the street.

I suspect when the neighbours saw us moving in they have assumed we are another in the long line of tenants who aren't going to be here long and have left us to our own devices.

So to my point, WIBU to pop a note through the two or so houses to say 'Hi! We're ghosts and DH and we have just bought x house, we look forward to meeting you in person'

Good idea? Or twatty?

what's the centre piece of your garden? a big gypsy lion?

marants · 25/08/2018 11:39

What’s a gypsy lion? Google doesn’t help. Is it a typo?

GhostsInSnow · 25/08/2018 12:48

No gypsy lions or nude statues of Michaelangelo either unfortunately.

It is about the social aspect, with so many people coming and going relationships aren't formed and that's a shame. The street I came from everyone knew eachother and kept an eye out for each other. It would be a shame to miss out on that because people assume we'll be clearing off in 6 months time so we aren't worth getting to know.

Chatting in passing while doing yardwork has always worked for me OP, though our current house we met all 3 sets of our neighbors the day we went to view. We'd driven out there having spotted it online at a ridiculously low price. It was empty, bank owned, I got the realtor's number off the 'for sale sign' ( just a thought OP - won't the neighbors know from the for sale sign? joke!) and called to make a proper appointment only to be told there were 40 offers, offers were closing that day and she couldn't get out to show us. Her snippy 'go away' tone got my back up so I asked if there was anyone else who could show it, she gave me the number of another local realtor and said she'd give them the key box code. I called they said someone would be there in about 30 minutes.

While we stood around waiting, one of the neighbors strolled over to chat. I told him jokingly we're going to be your new neighbors. He went and got his wife who came out with iced tea for us then she went and got the 2nd set of neighbors and then the 3rd neighbor drove up in her car. It was crazy we all stood around chatting and plotting how to kill off the other bidders until the realtor arrived and they all came inside with us to view it, noseying to see what the bank had done to it. We knew we were having that house and somehow so did they.
