To tell them to shove their job...??

I was successfully self employed for 10 years and following a divorce, got a bit panicky and took a full time job locally,

It is a weird family company where no one ever leaves... whole family generations work for the company. It is very clique and insular. However, I went for the financial security.

The bloke who I took over from had been there for 10 years. They absolutely worshipped the ground he walked on and he worked all the hours god sent. He asked for an assistant as the job is way too much for one person and they gave him an admin assistant who is keen but, not great so, he left.

He had left by the time I started so there was no handover and no notes. Nothing was written down!! It was a complete nightmare as it was nothing like anything that I have seen before and massively over complicated. I do have a lot of experience but, no matter how hard I worked, nothing was good enough.

It was the most demoralising job that I have ever had and I started having nightmares that I was useless. After 9 months, I resigned and they have made me work the full notice period.

The bloke who had the job before had changed jobs twice in the nine months so, when I resigned they offered him his job back. They offered him £5k more money than I am on and less hours. They actually showed me his new contract!!

They have presumed that I would stay on as a contractor. It now turns out that I was part of the package.... I am expected to be his new assistant!!!

I have told them that I am leaving at the end of my notice period. They are really angry that if I don’t stay, the other bloke will leave.... again...!!!

They think that I am being unreasonable!!! WTF???

Yanbu. Tell them to stuff their job.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 23/08/2018 21:07

But you were working your notice period? Why are they confused?! And yeh bloody rude to think you’d be his assistant!

introverteccentric · 23/08/2018 21:07

Ask then to reduce your hours and increase your salary by 5k and they have a deal ;)

John4703 · 23/08/2018 21:09

If they offer you a massive salary and benefits go for it but the most important person to think of is you and your life.
Work to live, don't live to work.

Donatello68 · 23/08/2018 21:09

They made snide comments that I wouldn’t have any other work anyway as i am going back to being self employed. As it happens, I am pretty much fully booked when my notice period ends..

Just say 'yes of course I will', play along, don't sign anything and walk out of there on your last day.

If you've resigned, you've resigned.

ThistleAmore · 23/08/2018 21:17

I would take an enormous amount of pleasure in telling them to shove their f*cking job and their weird set-up.

Presumably they're also aware that it's against the law to offer a different salary to a person doing the same job on the grounds of their sex?

Donatello68 · 23/08/2018 21:17

Thanks Sunshine! That was the tack that I am taking. I just said today that I wasn’t sure about the contracting and they were really rattled!! Being made to work the full 3 months notice is bad enough...

Actually, a solicitor friend of mine said that I had a good case for constructive dismissal.... it isn’t worth the hassle!!

SuperstarDJ · 23/08/2018 21:20

Is there a reason why your path might cross again in a business context? If not, I’d just leave without working your full notice period.

MulticolourMophead · 23/08/2018 21:21

I'd tell them to shove it. WTF are they thinking of? They can't seriously believe you're being unreasonable, surely. You've handed in your notice, so what bit of that are they not getting? Confused

stillnotTheDoctor · 23/08/2018 21:22

3 months notice??!!! what the heck?!

Donatello68 · 23/08/2018 21:22

It is very tempting Superstar but, it is a small town. I am hoping to take the high moral ground... unless I punch someone!! 😂

OP posts:
Donatello68 · 23/08/2018 21:25

And are making me work every bloody day of it!!! I am hoping that the bloke that did the job before changes his mind or doesn’t stay... 😂😂😂

MrsMozart · 23/08/2018 21:25

Run and don't look back!

They're barking mad.

I hope your new job has at least a degree of normality.

stillnotTheDoctor · 23/08/2018 21:26

They're just going to look stupid aren't they?

chchchnamechanges · 23/08/2018 21:26

We’re you only there 9 months? How can you claim constructive dismissal?

3 months is crazy after 9 months.

Eliza9917 · 23/08/2018 21:28

Tell them to put you on garden leave for the rest of your notice or to let you go early or you'll take the better offer they've given the previous bloke to a tribunal.

lowtide · 23/08/2018 21:29

3 months WTAF
Go on long term sick. Fuck em

Donatello68 · 23/08/2018 21:29

The bloke who did the job before is due back in a couple of weeks.. I am hoping that I can leave then. They have asked for an extended hand over period which will bring me up to the end of my notice period. He did the job for 10 years... not sure what I can bloody hand over to him!!!

OP posts:
sayanythingelse · 23/08/2018 21:31

Yes absolutely tell them to shove it! I don't understand why they think you'd be staying Hmm
I'll never work for a family owned business again. I've worked for a couple and they were both cliquey and horribly unorganized!

lowtide · 23/08/2018 21:31

Seriously. Go now. Off on stress and then start your new life. What are they going to do. Sack you?

Donatello68 · 23/08/2018 21:34

I have definitely learnt my lesson Sayanything! I will be so glad to get out. The whole experience has destroyed my confidence. I am going to take some time off before I take anything more on!!

OP posts:
UpstartCrow · 23/08/2018 21:35

Why wouldn't you go for constructive dismissal? They sound terrible.

delphguelph · 23/08/2018 21:36

3 months, we hear you cry?

yeah, don't go in tomorrow
