Given too much change...

So, went to a shop tonight to purchase a few bits and bobs. Came to £19, handed over £20, the lady gave me change which I shoved in purse but once I left I realised that she has given me £17.50 change.

I'm going to go back and return it tomorrow as I feel awful that the store person might be in bother for their till being short but wondered what others would do?

This is more of a WWYD as opposed to AIBU but wanted to know what other would do. When I was younger I wouldn't have thought anything of keeping it but now I must have a conscience 😂

I'd certainly take it back. If I was at home and noticed I'd been given about 20p I'd keep it but that's a substantial amount!

RayRayBidet · 23/08/2018 18:23

If it was a couple of quid I'd leave it but £17.50 I would go back.

PurpleFlower1983 · 23/08/2018 18:24

I would definitely take it back as the till will be down and the cashier will be in trouble.

PositiveVibez · 23/08/2018 18:25

Agree, I would take it back.

ilovesooty · 23/08/2018 18:26

Yes take it back.

ArmySal · 23/08/2018 18:27

Definitely take it back.

BertrandRussell · 23/08/2018 18:30

Of course take it back. It will come out of her wages otherwise.

How come you didn’t notice that you were being given 17.50 instead of a pound?

Tiredtomybones · 23/08/2018 18:31

Definitely take it back - you're doing the right thing. I'm just trying to fathom how the cashier came to £17.50 for your change, must have been one of those days for her.

Melliegrantfirstlady · 23/08/2018 18:32

Id keep it

HollowTalk · 23/08/2018 18:33

I would phone now, though, to say you'll return it, as the till will be down tonight and someone will be in trouble for it.

Onemorefortheroad · 23/08/2018 18:34

I have no idea how I didn't notice, I was too busy chatting and think it's been one of those days for her and I! I just feel so bad tonight as I'm not able to go back in until tomorrow.

OP posts:
Racecardriver · 23/08/2018 18:36

Obviously give it back but the cashier will get in trouble regardless because she made a mistake and 9 times out of ten the business would not get the money back.

MsHopey · 23/08/2018 18:37

In the places I've worked more than £10 down and it needs investigating. I'd take it back, she'll probably get in trouble for making the mistake. But better that then being labelled a thief.

Witchend · 23/08/2018 18:42

How on earth can yo not notice £17.50 rater than £1?
That presumably had 2 notes it when you expected none.
The way I see it is if you would go back if you'd been overcharged by that amount then you go back if you're undercharged.

Lazypuppy · 23/08/2018 18:47

I'd keep it

Thesearmsofmine · 23/08/2018 18:51

That much I would take back but she will probably get a telling off anyway.

Thatssomebadhatharry · 23/08/2018 18:55

No way! Your expecting a pound and you get either a massive amount of change or at least two notes.
If this happened unless the change was wrapped in the receipt I’d assume there was money in my purse before.
Plus the till tells the change, how could she be THAT wrong.
Sorry op I don’t believe you.

Onemorefortheroad · 23/08/2018 19:09

Oh well, I wasn't asking if anyone believes me or not, I was just interested as to what others would do, not to help me decide what to do as I am taking it back!

I wasn't thinking "oh i'm expecting to get a pound change" when I was at the tills, I wasn't thinking anything (well except the million and one things us Mums usually are!) and just put the change in purse and walked off. I only had a £20 in my purse and the receipt says £1 change but that obviously wasn't what I was given!

WhiteCoyote · 23/08/2018 19:27

I’d definitely take it back, she would certainly get into trouble for that.

Changedmynametoolikeyou · 23/08/2018 19:31

I could easily have not noticed, I’ve had it happen the other way round and not noticed I’ve been shortchanged by a tenner. Give them a call or just take it back.

MiddleClassPerm · 23/08/2018 19:36

In our job if there's a difference of £3 it needs reporting.

I remember serving a woman once and just as I handed her her change I had a suspicion it was the wrong amount. I'd had to change a note for fivers and accidentally given her one of the fivers with her change. I saw her look at the change and then stuff it in her pocket and run out. It was too late for me to say anything.

Then a few weeks ago I was chatting to a customer as I served her, and again (I AM good at my job, honest Grin) i gave her too much change. She noticed and immediately gave it back. It was so unexpected and nice I actually got a bit teary Blush

Well done for doing the right thing, OP, it'll make you feel good about yourself too Smile

You're saying you can't tell the difference between one pound, and either 2 to 2 paper notes and at least 3 coins, or a large handful of heavy coins?
I'd be concerned about that.

TheHobbitMum · 23/08/2018 19:39

On behalf of retail staff thank you for being so honest Flowers The shop worker undoubtedly will be in trouble when cashing up after her till, is there anyway to call tonight to let them know? Obviously only if they are open late as it would help but they will be very grateful when you return tomorrow. Well done!

Hilda40 · 23/08/2018 19:44

I returned £2 at the chippy yesterday. I hesitated for about 2 seconds, but I'm happy I did the right thing. The guy was very grateful.

user1491678180 · 23/08/2018 19:45

@OneMoreForTheRoad

And you didn't notice?
