So, went to a shop tonight to purchase a few bits and bobs. Came to £19, handed over £20, the lady gave me change which I shoved in purse but once I left I realised that she has given me £17.50 change.

I'm going to go back and return it tomorrow as I feel awful that the store person might be in bother for their till being short but wondered what others would do?

This is more of a WWYD as opposed to AIBU but wanted to know what other would do. When I was younger I wouldn't have thought anything of keeping it but now I must have a conscience 😂

I can have the weight of the world on my shoulders but if someone hands you £17.50 instead of a quid then you’d notice it.
Glad you returned it

I totally buy it. I often don't notice how much a few bits in the supermarket come to. As I've looked at the price of individual items. I don't pay in cash much but 2hen I do I never check my change.

OK so take it back if you feel that's the right thing to do (I would too and have done in the past) however to clear up some misconceptions... I work on retail.... If a persons float is short, it does not come out of their wages... It used to but it is now illegal for a company to do that.
The cashier would really only get into serious trouble if it was a regular occurrence. being out by €1/2 is not a big deal. Up or down 5/10/20 just needs to be monitored a bit. Most retailers realise that mistakes happen and cashiers are only human.... Doubt she will get into trouble unless it's a regular thing

If it's Tesco, she wouldn't of got into trouble. If it was a small newsagents, maybe.

I didn't think it would necessarily come out her wages or anything but it just felt wrong if she ended up being stressed about it etc etc although in Tesco I'm not sure if they have their own 'float' as such as you always see them swapping over but who knows. All is well now Grin

All those saying how could I not notice, as I've said above, it was a busy shop, I was chatting away, wasn't thinking too much about what it came to, what I had handed over (although obviously subconsciously realised a £20 was enough and didn't have to use card) what was given back, just stuffed receipts and change into purse while trying to stuff shopping into bag. Why would I make this up? 😂 🤨
