To cancel the BBQ?

Blatantly posting here for traffic.
DD has threadworm. My first experience of it and not one I want to repeat.

We’ve treated the whole household as a precaution, and changed bedding/towels, hoovered, disinfected floors etc.

But... we can’t be sure it’s fully out the house. I mean... what if we didn’t know for ages? What if we’ve been spreading little critter eggs for ages. What if they’re on toys? I have hoovered toys in beds but not them all. Should I?

Now comes the crunch.

We’re due to have a BBQ this weekend. About 40 people, loads of children including young ones that still put things in their mouth. No problem I thought. Everyone will be outside. We’ll be prepping the food and will be taking all usual hygiene precautions as you would when you prep food.

But... it’s due to piss it down. That might mean everyone coming inside. Children crawling around everywhere putting things in mouths. Is that safe? What if I give one of them worms! Am I being hysterical? Honestly would you want to still come round? Should I warn everyone, and/or say nothing and/or cancel?

What would you want if you were coming here and AIBU to panic and cancel?

Yabh
Work that out!!

HortenseTheHousecat · 23/08/2018 16:25

Oh I’ve never had threadworm... dunno. I know my lovely neighbours had it when I was due to babysit for them. I was pregnant at the time so they cancelled me babysitting. I didn’t think it was weird or ott of them to cancel, but then I’ve never had threadworms!

Busybusybust · 23/08/2018 16:27

Sounds like you want to cancel it. If so the. The thread worms sounds like a good excuse! But, really, you are being a little over dramatic😀

INeedMoreCakeInMyLife · 23/08/2018 16:29

Bit over dramatic..
When there's a case in schools they don't go round scrubbing every item

purpleme12 · 23/08/2018 16:30

Loads of children get threadworm. It's more common than you think. But in my experience you can easily get rid of it. I think ybu

Dilemmacentral · 23/08/2018 16:32

100%. Wouldn’t Cancel!

We have had twice. No big deal at all. Take the tablet. Fixed.

Dilemmacentral · 23/08/2018 16:32

Would a school close if a child has it? Don’t be daft

YeTalkShiteHen · 23/08/2018 16:33

April is it that word beginning with H designed to shut women up when they’re worried about something and dismiss them?

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 23/08/2018 16:33

Your mistake was to arrange a BBQ for a bank holiday. You should have known it would rain.

Whocansay · 23/08/2018 16:35

Threadworms can live for up to 2 weeks outside the human body. How long have the family been clear?

If you've cleaned towels, sheets, etc, and are all clear, I suspect you won't have an issue. However, if you are worried you could always mention it to your guests beforehand and give them the choice.

You have my sympathies. We've had them. They were horrible.

FaFoutis · 23/08/2018 16:35

Don't tell anyone about the worms if you do have the BBQ.

Aprilshowersinaugust · 23/08/2018 16:36

You are being hysterical as you suspected op!!

Amanduh · 23/08/2018 16:38

Yes you are being ridiculous!

serbska · 23/08/2018 16:40

No big deal at all. Take the tablet. Fixed.

This

OutPinked · 23/08/2018 16:42

I would cancel for the weather alone in all honesty. I don’t know anything about threadworms, never known anyone to have them but I wouldn’t want to risk a BBQ in shit weather.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 23/08/2018 16:43

FWIW my middle ds had this a couple of times when he was younger and nobody else in the family got it.

I wouldn't cancel because of that, but I might consider rearranging for better weather, unless you have a mansion. 40 people inside doesn't sound like much fun, tbh.

EdisonLightBulb · 23/08/2018 16:49

Yes, don't cancel. If the bedding and sheets are all fresh and you have all been wormed you will be fine. DD had them, twice when she was about 5 and 7. No one else caught them in this house.

A BBQ in the rain however, unless you have a gazebo, sounds grim.

yikesanotherbooboo · 23/08/2018 16:52

Threadworms are harmless. Some of your guests are likely to be harbouring them any way. They are in no way a reason to cancel . Bad weather is a better reason.

PineapplePen07 · 23/08/2018 16:54

I'm in the minority but I wouldn't want to come.

At least tell your guests so they can make an informed decision.

Jaxhog · 23/08/2018 16:55

Yikes. I'd cancel.

DH and I had them many, many years ago, and they weren't that easy to get rid of. We caught them from a London restaurant that has now close, I'm glad to say.

actualpuffins · 23/08/2018 16:56

Don't cancel. It honestly isn't a big deal and people can pick up worms from anywhere.

PuppyMonkey · 23/08/2018 16:58

Cancel bbq due to crap weather and don’t even mention a minor problem that millions of other kids cope with very easily and quickly.

Citylivingwithdogs · 23/08/2018 16:58

Around 40% of children 10 and under will have had threadworms. You would be cancelling a lot events if threadworms was a problem. I bet included in your guests, there will be another child with worms.

jarhead123 · 23/08/2018 17:00

We have had in about 4-5 times! Wouldnt cancel, but you sound like you want to so maybe a good excuse x

newmumwithquestions · 23/08/2018 17:05

Ok Thankyou. I am being hysterical. That makes me feel a lot better :-) I’ve got a family member telling me that I could infect everyone and it’s irresponsible to go ahead which was what set me off!

I think I’m a little scarred with seeing what I saw when I discovered them.

And DD has been really uncomfortable with them (screaming at night etc).

To answer a previous question at the time of the BBQ it’ll be a week after treatment - so it’ll have safely had the few days to work (no screaming at night last night so hopefully it’s worked). But within the 2 weeks that the eggs live for.

Some of the people attending do know so I didn’t know whether to give everyone the option of cancelling.
