So I really don't think I'm being unreasonable, but apparently the person who said this does. This is about a particular upcoming movie (Captain Marvel), but you dont need to be interested in this stuff to give your opinion.

If you don't know, Captain Marvel will be the first solo female lead superhero movie in the Marvel franchise since they started producing films in 2008. I went onto a site talking about it, and found this comment -

Just like feminist stood up to have women be stronger im standing up for men, its one thing to be equal and another thing to now have women seem stronger then men in everything. First they take Ghost Busters now they want to take Oceans 11, The Incredibles, and now the Marvel Universe I will not watch this. Keep things fair or else the rolls will not be equal but instead reversed.

This pisses me off so much. I'm not what you would call an "active feminist" or anything, but I don't know a woman alive who wouldn't want to be treated the same as men. I completely disagree with whoever the dipshit that posted this comment was. Apparently all male leads are totally fine, but a couple of all female lead movies is apparently "unfair". It's the same to an extent with Doctor Who.

I will agree that Ghostbusters was shit though. It was. Stop basing everything that has a female lead with fucking Ghostbusters. AIBU to be this mad? Until a while ago, I had no idea some people felt this way and I think it's making me pretty cynical (Well, more so). Would love your opinions on this.

Seriously? Why would you give a tiny shit what some random on the Internet said about a movie.

Really get a hobby or something.

maxthemartian · 23/08/2018 11:43

Male leads are totally normalised. Female leads are so unusual that it's a "thing".
I remember a bunch of sadcase men also got their knickers in a bunch about the most recent Mad Max film being too feminist supposedly.
Also tell him it's "roles" not "rolls".

JacquesHammer · 23/08/2018 11:46

I will not watch this

The poor flower. Doesn't he realise that he could have just typed the above?

If only if weren't compulsory for him to watch movies Grin

UpstartCrow · 23/08/2018 11:46

OK I'll bite.
Aliens was groundbreaking and not shit. Ripley didn't have to be 'stronger' than anyone or 'equal' to anyone to be a strong female lead.

Instead of remaking old films, with or without with female leads, companies should focus on making good films.

Brambleboo · 23/08/2018 11:46

That man is an idiot. Don't get mad at him, laugh at him instead. He's clueless.

Coldilox · 23/08/2018 11:48

misses the point wnrirely I actually liked the female Ghostbusters!

Coldilox · 23/08/2018 11:49

*entirely

4GreenApples · 23/08/2018 11:49
Hmm

The poor little flower Hmm

I’ll bet there’s still stacks more films with male leads than female despite these few high profile examples listed.

AlyTab · 23/08/2018 11:49

@Bluntness100 This was just an example. I used this comment in particular because it baffled me the most.

And I actually have many hobbies. I took maybe 10 minutes out of my day to ask a question to hear people's opinions. Maybe you should get a hobby babe.

4GreenApples · 23/08/2018 11:50

Pretty sure Captain Marvel isn’t a remake BTW.

AlyTab · 23/08/2018 11:52

Oh shit I forgot to put quotations around the quote. Hope everyone gets it anyway!

OP posts:
BonfiresOfInsanity · 23/08/2018 11:52

Coldilox, I really like it too. Much prefer it to the original one.

4GreenApples · 23/08/2018 11:54

Men also get more dialogue in films than women as a general rule (including films with female leads), according to this analysis of films someone’s done:

pudding.cool/2017/03/film-dialogue/

BonfiresOfInsanity · 23/08/2018 11:54

I'm quite enjoying my DSs growing up keen to watch films which have either male or female leads without getting hung up on it. Your internet person is a twat.

Sennendream · 23/08/2018 11:55

I don't agree with his comment, but in the grand scheme of inequality that women face I think his comment is a minor issue.

toomanychilder · 23/08/2018 11:56

yabu to be enraged by what one predictable knobjockey on the internet said.

BonfiresOfInsanity · 23/08/2018 11:57

4GreenApples that's a really interesting site.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 23/08/2018 12:02

Why would you care about the opinion of someone whose standard of written English is that appalling?

AlyTab · 23/08/2018 12:02

@4GreenApples That's actually interesting. Doesn't surprise me though now that I think about it and all the films I've seen lately.

OP posts:
worridmum · 23/08/2018 12:06

Captain marvel has always been female what gets my goat was the last jedi changed all the men from competent to blundering idiots while at the same time make every single female in the film better then all the men.

For gods sake watch force awakens then watch the last jedi to differnce is glaring.

Whipsmart · 23/08/2018 12:15

It's so weird when men think a handful of female-led movies mean feminism has gone "too far" and beyond simple equality. To have equality we woudl have to make as many female-led films as there are male-led. That's a LOT of films. To go beyond equality they would have to actually outnumber the male-centred films. Can't see that happening any time soon.

noblegiraffe · 23/08/2018 12:15

Because women will have one Marvel film they’re stronger than men who have all the rest?

How entitled is he that he thinks men should have them all?

flamingnoravera · 23/08/2018 12:19

If you are on facebook have a look at the "man who has it all" page- there are some interesting twists of looking at the world from the other perspective there. Perhaps something useful you could use as a cutting response (if you feel you have to respond at all).

DieAntword · 23/08/2018 12:21

I guess it depends if you enjoy being enraged. If you do like the energy a bit of anger gives you (plenty of people do, it’s why Julie Birchills column in the guardian did so well) then go for it. On the other hand I’d you don’t enjoy it and it makes your life less pleasant I would say it’s really not worth getting upset about - water off a ducks back is the best approach then imo.

daffodillament · 23/08/2018 12:22

Ha ha ha ha !
