So I really don't think I'm being unreasonable, but apparently the person who said this does. This is about a particular upcoming movie (Captain Marvel), but you dont need to be interested in this stuff to give your opinion.

If you don't know, Captain Marvel will be the first solo female lead superhero movie in the Marvel franchise since they started producing films in 2008. I went onto a site talking about it, and found this comment -

Just like feminist stood up to have women be stronger im standing up for men, its one thing to be equal and another thing to now have women seem stronger then men in everything. First they take Ghost Busters now they want to take Oceans 11, The Incredibles, and now the Marvel Universe I will not watch this. Keep things fair or else the rolls will not be equal but instead reversed.

This pisses me off so much. I'm not what you would call an "active feminist" or anything, but I don't know a woman alive who wouldn't want to be treated the same as men. I completely disagree with whoever the dipshit that posted this comment was. Apparently all male leads are totally fine, but a couple of all female lead movies is apparently "unfair". It's the same to an extent with Doctor Who.

I will agree that Ghostbusters was shit though. It was. Stop basing everything that has a female lead with fucking Ghostbusters. AIBU to be this mad? Until a while ago, I had no idea some people felt this way and I think it's making me pretty cynical (Well, more so). Would love your opinions on this.

honestly though Doctor Who shouldn't have been a woman, same as James Bond can't be a man.

Its just as sexist to give the role to a woman just because she is a woman.

Ps Oceans 11 was amazing, Ghostbusters was shit.

redexpat · 23/08/2018 12:26

People who make those sort of comment never seem to think hey another male lead - the patriarchy has gone too far. When youre used to priveledge, equality feels like opression (Is what I read on mn the other day).

imnotreally · 23/08/2018 12:29

My favourite thing about the Marvel films is that the girls are the only ones who don't need super powers to kick ass.

The people who wrote that are probably the same people who complained about Black Panther being, well, black.

Permaexhaustion · 23/08/2018 12:33

"When you're used to privilege, equality feels like oppression. "

Tiny 🎻 out for all men suffering.

OliviaStabler · 23/08/2018 12:34

Any remake of Ghostbusters would have been a crime. Male or female leads.

There are lots of people on the internet who talk a lot of bollocks. You need to let go.

PrincessWire · 23/08/2018 12:35

Re Doctor Who. The Doctor is neither a man nor a woman. The Doctor is a Timelord. Nowhere in the entire 50 plus year narrative does it mention Timelords' genitals, or how they reproduce. There is no reason why The Doctor shouldn't have the outward appearance of a human female instead of a human male.

I liked the new Ghostbusters and I liked Ocean's Eight. What these MRAs don't seem to comprehend is that the existence of the new films doesn't delete the existence of the old ones. If you love the old Ghostbusters but you don't like the idea of the new one then watch the old one and don't watch the new one. It's not hard. Personally I love them both!

argumentativefeminist · 23/08/2018 12:36

Can't believe the amount of posters saying "ignore it" or "get over yourself and move on". What's the boundary for engaging with and challenging misogyny? When is it "worth it" and when is it not?

Aeroflotgirl · 23/08/2018 12:39

Some stupid random on the internet, ignore.

This is hilarious (and relevant, i’m not posting random crap).

I didn’t know that karyatide, I despair!

HoomanMoomin · 23/08/2018 15:36

YABU to be enraged by some idiot’s opinion, but not by his spelling.
“Rolls reversed”? Sounds like something with pork, that you would serve with Christmas dinner. Grin

Also, to be more enraged, go to Doctor Who Facebook page and read some comments. Many many gentle flowers and sexist snowflakes there.

Sparklesocks · 23/08/2018 15:45

The internet is great in many ways, but it’s also a shield for racists/sexists/bigots and general arseholes to feel emboldened by anonymity and spout off their small minded views.

Its quite distressing to read some of their bile but I think in some cases it’s best to ignore, not feed their need for attention and leave them to their misery.

cariadlet · 23/08/2018 15:56

I loved the new Ghostbusters. After we'd seen it I bought a dvd of the original one to show my dd. I'd loved watching it when it first came out and was looking forward to seeing it again. It was crap! Not nearly as funny as I'd remembered and there were some awful sleazy scenes with Bill Murray.

BoneyBackJefferson · 23/08/2018 16:00

PrincessWire

My issue with Dr Who is not that the Dr will be femail its that they don't seem to be able to write a decent male companion.

All of them to date have been muppets with the exception of Cpt Jack and he was a prick till he came out.

Even the 1st Dr episode had him being sexist, and making stupid comments when the original Dr didn't.

TufVoyaging · 23/08/2018 16:00

I'mnotreally - me too. I always point out that BlackWidow keeps up with the men, without super powers, usually without impressive tech such as repulsor beams or vibranium, and she does it in heels. Can't wait for Captain Marvel

Celebelly · 23/08/2018 16:18

I mean it's absurd because in the comics, she is one of the strongest superheroes around. They haven't meddled with anything purely to make a film with a strong female lead - she has literally been a strong female lead for decades and one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel universe. But there's no point arguing with idiots.

Marvel actually has a lot of strong female characters in the comics, once you get past the 60s/70s.

midgesforever · 23/08/2018 16:19

We liked the new ghostbusters, my DS having seem them all liked it the best.
We are all doctor who fans in our house and looking forward to the change, the same can't be said of every doctor who fan but it's not a surprise that misogyny is alive and well.

Stephisaur · 23/08/2018 16:19

Ah the fragile male ego.

YANBU to think the poster is being ridiculous (especially given Captain Marvel's impressive comic history) but YABU to get this worked up about it I think.

Helpmeyouyetti · 23/08/2018 16:23

Why do they keep re making stuff ? I don’t care whose the lead as long as the movies are re done well and non of them are unfortunately.

GooodMythicalMorning · 23/08/2018 16:26

I loved the new ghost busters film.

Poloshot · 23/08/2018 16:31

Hope you're ok now and not too upset

cdtaylornats · 23/08/2018 16:32

The trouble with the female heroes in Marvel is the interesting ones are far too powerful.

Pheonix - ate a star killing billions on its planets

Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel/Binary - star-powered energy weapon

Scarlet Witch - remade reality

imnotreally · 23/08/2018 16:56

@cdtaylornats I disagree. Black widow, shuri, gamora, okoye - all strong women with no super powers. Even Nebula, although she's not exactly a hero. I also love that Shuri is cleverer than stark and banner with all their PhDs
