Let's reclaim the five syllable word. University. It grates to read MNers talking about their DC going off to "uni" or even about their own time at "uni". Just call it what it is: university.

OP posts:
derxa · 24/08/2018 21:31

It was Uni when I was there - 1970's No no no no no I'll scream and and and scream until I'm sick.

waterfeature · 24/08/2018 21:31

Haven’t RTFT but TOTALLY agree. Am I the only one?

manicmij · 24/08/2018 21:33

Hope you do not require to use the omnibus to travel to your place of higher education.

DiegoMadonna · 24/08/2018 21:35

GrannyHaddock

If you're conflating using the words uni and guy with eating balsamic vinegar and sun-dried tomato paste (and quinoa), then I think you're a little confused.

GrannyHaddock · 24/08/2018 21:40

Possibly.

neveracceptpoortrading · 24/08/2018 21:41

Will all parents stop boasting about their kids (sorry children) - another example of the Harry Enfield sketch "We are better than thou"

mumknowsbest47 · 24/08/2018 21:44

The most pointless post ever! YABU

ArthuriaAugustaDarcy · 24/08/2018 21:49

I say television and telephone, too. I would never, ever, ever say "uni". I can't describe how much I hate it. OP, you are being more than reasonable, and anyone who thinks otherwise is quite mad.

bubblegumunicorn · 24/08/2018 21:51

There is so much miss information in this thread its unreal people bashing clearing is crazy say you got AAB in your A levels Oxbridge wanted AAA and so did your second choice so you face clearing should you not go to uni? You’re clearly smart enough to go! I went to uni in the 10s and things have changed a lot my university has turned 10 this year it’s new and that’s great because new unis are as good as the old red bricks I know ex polys that are higher ranked than some red bricks! It’s a brilliant that people from different backgrounds get to get an education my DH is the first person in his whole family to get a degree! Stop saying it’s lower class or people who go to polys because honestly polys went before I was even born so get over it. Also trust me as I know from my job exams are not easier now they are harder than ever. So op I’m sorry you don’t like the word Uni that’s fine but people shouldn’t stop using it! I hate the word hubby it makes me think of my English teacher and that just creeps me out but people shouldn’t stop using it!

BitOutOfPractice · 24/08/2018 22:04

Erm yes, yes they should stop using hubby.

Saraho79 · 24/08/2018 22:18

How about adults been able to say the words son, daughter, husband rather than the dd, ds and bloody dh.
REALLY?????

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 24/08/2018 22:20

@bubble ah but this is Mumsnet where HE snobbery is rife! Unless you went to Oxbridge ( or at a push a RG uni) you needn't have bothered....despite the majority of people not having a clue what it all means in reality.
I've worked in schools and universities my entire career but MN is the only place where people talk about ex-polys because, as you rightly point out, nobody cares anymore! Labels such as RG, ex-poly etc in no way denote the quality of education and teaching you will receive....as the relatively recent TEF results demonstrated.

Londonmamabychance · 24/08/2018 22:24

At 11 Post Meridiem I am much too tired to think about why this would bother you.

AttilaTheMusical · 24/08/2018 22:36

I get you OP - I can't explain why, but it just makes me cringe just a tiny little bit. It's the same sort of unwelcome frisson that I get when someone says 'panties' or 'mini beasts'. Ugh.

Goonerdaddy82 · 24/08/2018 22:38

Well.... now I wish I could reclaim those last few minutes of my life back because this thread you started is absolute rubbish.

Shewhomustbeobeyed1 · 24/08/2018 23:10

It’s a no from me

RoseWhiteTips · 24/08/2018 23:24

Much rather have gone to an ex poly than to one of the Ancients. If only I had set my sights much lower.

RoseWhiteTips · 24/08/2018 23:27

bubblegumunicorn

You do know full stops are pretty much essential, no?

Karen49 · 24/08/2018 23:30

spot on

HidingFromDD · 24/08/2018 23:37

I went to Uni in early 80s, some of my friends went to Poly. Neighbours hadn't been aired then.

BTW, I also have a Mom, not Mum, and no, that doesn't come from American tv either, we didn't have a tv in those days!!

gingergenius · 24/08/2018 23:58

I can't wait to get back to uni in sept.
I'm 49
Zero shits given.

In fact that's crap....there are lots of shits given. Can I go back now because I'm soooooo not the cool student. And I'm annoyed that my kids are still at home and I have shit to do in order to organise my ridiculous life and get back into academia?...
Like get my degree and not actually care how someone chooses to refer to it?

Shednik · 25/08/2018 00:15

Uni uni uni uni uni uni uni

mostdays · 25/08/2018 00:38

My class teacher described it as uni when I was at junior school in the 80s.

1forAll74 · 25/08/2018 02:15

My late husband went to university in the 1960's era,, but my two offspring went to uni in the 1980's era. but I have never watched Neighbours ! and as for me, I went out to work when I left school aged 15 !!

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 25/08/2018 02:26

Nah.
