Let's reclaim the five syllable word. University. It grates to read MNers talking about their DC going off to "uni" or even about their own time at "uni". Just call it what it is: university.

Someone has a lot of time on their hands lol...

pictish · 24/08/2018 19:34

Uni! Uni! Uni!

BertrandRussell · 24/08/2018 19:37

I remember my father being outraged by "uni" in about 1970 when my cousin came tonsray from Australia-she was at Monash.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 24/08/2018 19:45

Chippy? Hmm I won't say where I went to university.*

*I don't, as I said, use 'uni' myself. Never have. But I can cope with others using it without it 'grating', and without feeling the need to feel superior to them.

MrBennOfFestiveRoad · 24/08/2018 19:45

Not read the whole thread but I think that it came from the TV show Neighbours in a he late 80s. I remember thinking that it sounded strange but soon everyone (including me) was using it!

BikingBeatrix · 24/08/2018 19:46

I call hypocrisy. MNetters instead of Mumsnetters. Shock, horror. Grin

mathanxiety · 24/08/2018 19:46

It's a ridiculous word.

When I was a student it was called college, and it still is in the part of the world I live in now.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 24/08/2018 19:50

Holibobs.......aaaaarghghghhg

GabsAlot · 24/08/2018 19:52

Goldilocks3Bears · 24/08/2018 20:07

U ok hun?!

Yabu - if this is the sort of shite you have time to worry about, study Shakespearean English and see how you get on with that.
Language evolves and this sort of daily-mail-reader outrage and criticism of language is a sign that maybe you’re lagging behind....

ktp100 · 24/08/2018 20:07

Who can be arsed to say that university when uni will do?

Just no.

StoneofDestiny · 24/08/2018 20:07

MrBenn
No - Uni was in use well before the 1980's and Neighbours!

StoneofDestiny · 24/08/2018 20:08

It was Uni when I was there - 1970's

Faith7777 · 24/08/2018 20:17

Hastag. First. World. Problems.

AnnieAnoniMoose · 24/08/2018 20:26

Uni. Nothing wrong with it at all. This thread has been done many times since the one in 2007 🤣 at a minimum, annually, around this time. It’s not the only annual ‘stick up your arse thread’, but it’s the most notable. I agree with a PP who said it’s dated and aging to call it University.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 24/08/2018 20:28

of course it’s uni, every one I know calls it uni.or if they’re posh younee

StorminaTCut · 24/08/2018 20:28

Ruby Ruby Ruby

purplevamp · 24/08/2018 20:56

Maybe we should all start calling our prams, perambulators again?

Or say we're using our telephones or watching television. Wink

AmandaGWilliamson · 24/08/2018 21:18

sigh seriously feel bad for people who are so irritated by something so inconsequential as this that they have to post it on here.

TooManyPaws · 24/08/2018 21:23

I was at uni in the late 70s, again in Scotland. Never watched Neighbours in my life. I remember it grating on me when my aunt referred to it as Varsity and telling her to use uni or university instead. College was where I went to do a post grad secretarial course yonks later. Or when referring to the different parts of the uni.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 24/08/2018 21:28

Or say we're using our telephones or watching television.

I still say television. Blush God forbid that I should say "telly." Shock

Which reminds me..... HATE HATE HATE "belly."

Headfullofdreams · 24/08/2018 21:28

Yes YABU

MyOtherProfile · 24/08/2018 21:28

Or say we're using our telephones or watching television
Actually I do say television. That has probably totally outed me as the only person under 80 to use the full word. Grin

Lalala2018 · 24/08/2018 21:29

These replies are so savage 😂

GrannyHaddock · 24/08/2018 21:30

I can't say "uni" or "guy". Just too trendy. I've only just started using balsamic vinegar and sun-dried tomato paste. In ten or twenty years I'll try quinoa.
