Let's reclaim the five syllable word. University. It grates to read MNers talking about their DC going off to "uni" or even about their own time at "uni". Just call it what it is: university.

I work for an American company, mostly PhD scientists... I remember being perplexed the first time someone asked me about my 'school', they meant 'grad school'Grin

Shazzyj87 · 24/08/2018 17:51

Coming from someone who uses MNers and DC... hm

No

Stupomax · 24/08/2018 17:53

Can I throw it out there that if all word abbreviations are fine, then 'math' is just as valid as 'maths'?

Or should I duck and run?

Rostom · 24/08/2018 17:55

University.

'Uni' has dumbed down the meaning of rigorous in-depth learning (along with, I suspect, the level of many degree courses. I'll stand back and await the fire.....).

I went to the same college as Mr Anthony Wedgwood Benn - the senior tutor of which delighted in informing students that Mr Benn was a “commoner” (as opposed to a “scholar” - this being a joke re his denouncement of his peerage). Ho ho ho. Of course Benn went “up” to college not just “to” college.

It’s all class ridden terminology.

WoollyMollyMonkey · 24/08/2018 17:57

Math makes me cringe and want to shout ssssssssss!

TheFormidableMrsC · 24/08/2018 17:59

I say uni, indeed my daughter is starting uni in September thus I have used it quite a lot recently. I rarely hear people referring to "university" although that is fine too.

The term "preggers" though...good Lord that makes my teeth itch.

Stupomax · 24/08/2018 18:00

Math makes me cringe and want to shout ssssssssss!

And now we start to understand why uni makes others cringe and want to shout 'university'...

PrimalLass · 24/08/2018 18:01

Nope.

Uni.

Stupomax · 24/08/2018 18:03

bubblegumunicorn · 24/08/2018 18:04

When did you go to uni? The dark ages 😏

nostaples · 24/08/2018 18:04

I'm with you OP. It's one of my pet hates and I can't bring myself to say it. The only words I hate more are 'nibbles' and 'hun'.

Fowles94 · 24/08/2018 18:05

Not being funny but AIBU, YABU, etc are more anonoying

rosy71 · 24/08/2018 18:05

I went in 1989 and never heard anyone say "uni". Like pps, I only ever heard that on Australian soaps. People did say "poly" for "polytechnic" though.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 24/08/2018 18:05

Oh God, yes!! I'm totally with you, OP. Has been driving me nuts for years. Ages back, BIL advised me to give in and go with it. I tried; I really did, but the abbreviation just sticks in my throat, so I mutter "uni.... VERSITY" as I just can't do it.

itsaboojum · 24/08/2018 18:06

But "uni" isn’t short for "university".

No. It’s short for "likeunilike". Just listen to any group of undergraduates discussing their plans for the following day, and one will eventually announce "I'm like going to likeunilike."

How about we call it HE or FE if it’s not actually a real university....

NettieF · 24/08/2018 18:08

absolutely agree OP

user1483875094 · 24/08/2018 18:11

DOLLY ..... Sorry, I’d love to post a lengthy reply to this but I’m off to the gymnasium hmm .... Love, that made me laugh out LOUD !!! Thank you!!! I enjoyed that really good giggle. I bet you are such a laugh to be with - life is too short for all this nonsense, and I loved your witty response. You have given me a lovely giggle tonight, thanks for that. xx

ErrolTheDragon · 24/08/2018 18:13

'Math' sounds wrong to me too, but arguably isn't wrong - 'mathematics' is singular (mathematics is fun/hard etc)

In jest and good humour.... OP you wrote

Let's "LET US" reclaim the five syllable word. University. It grates to read MNers "MUMSNETTERS" talking about their DC "DARLING CHILDREN" going off to "uni" or even about their own time at "uni". Just call it what it is: university.
