Poor ds aged 2.5 laceration to forehead about 3 inches across which has been glued. It just awful akin to once of those gory fake injuries people put on at halloween at the minute poor baby.
everyone keeps saying it will be ok. But how long to heal?
I can’t imagine it will fade to nothing it’s far too big all my friends comparisons are to their dcs that had little nicks here and there.
Surgeon said we could look at revising it once ds is older if needed but that’s so far away 😢
I’m really panicking for him

Be patient, little ones heal significantly. Foreheads are not the worst places to have scars

SneakyGremlins · 22/08/2018 20:29

I cant speak for facial injuries but I cut all the way along my arm flying into barbed wire off my bike at about 6 - elbow to wrist - this is all that's left now.

I'm sure he'll be fine SmileFlowers

I really hope so it looked horrific when it happened and they said once dressed it would be much better but still looked awful. Poor baby.

I’d imagine it will heal/settle a lot better than expected, once the actual wound has healed you could try bio oil or a silicon scar sheet to reduce scarring if you’re still worried?

CarbieDoll · 22/08/2018 20:39

I have seen bio oil mentioned online as a possible treatment I could do once it starts healing not sure if anyone has successfully tried anything else?

My toddler had an accident where he got burned. It was horrendous and his skin look terrible (large area) that was nearly 3 years ago and all he has left is a small patch that looks like a burn scar about an inch in size, considering half his torso was scalded, it's amazing. Still cry about it everytime I think about it.

CarbieDoll · 22/08/2018 20:40

Cross post! Will look into the silicon

DD had a few scrapes as a small child, but the scars that won't go are her chicken pox scars. She had it twice. The first time too mildly to make her immune. The second time aged 9, and she was very poorly.

ILoveMyDressingGown · 22/08/2018 20:42

Can you see the line on my forehead? That's a scar, and there's another really feint one next to it. They're from when I was about 3 and my sister either hit me with something or pushed me and I fell into one of those huge 3' glass whisky bottles. It cut my head open and I needed stitches. I never had the scar revised or anything and now, 34 years later, it's barely visible.

Oh I also had an accident when I was younger (16) tripped and fell but had things in my hands and didn't stop my face hitting the ground, scarred a small area of my face but the doctor prescribed me ointment they gave to people with scarring after eye surgery. It took the red scar away withing days, I couldn't believe it. Have no idea what it was called though sorry.

Katescurios · 22/08/2018 20:43

Silicon sheet is great, i had a surgery on my hand last year and the scar was very bumpy. Could see the difference after just a few days with the silicone sheet.

OublietteBravo · 22/08/2018 20:44

DD ended up with a huge gash in her forehead (she put her head through a panel on a glass door aged 14 months).

This is how it looks now (she’s 13).

Long term, you could grow his hair over it? Scars are ok, they add character and they fade loads.. My dd2 (8) has a scar over her eyebrow after splitting her brow quite nastily age 3. There's still a visible scar but it is tiny now. Foreheads bleed loads don't they?

ILoveMyDressingGown · 22/08/2018 20:45

Also, one of my children fell off the step outside with their scooter and bashed their chin on the concrete. It made a right mess and needed those paper stitches. Several years later there is no visible scar at all.

I used to be a nurse in a clinic for wounds and scars a few years ago. I only worked there for a few months before I moved on so not claiming to be a total expert, but the work was fairly repetitive in terms of advice we gave. The advice was along the lines of - there's nothing wrong with bio-oil but its expensive and its actually the motion of massaging the scar, rather than the bio oil itself that made the scar flatter. We encouraged a lot of massage - like several times a day for a few minutes at a time - maybe 5-10 (cant quite remember), but that was for more severe scars. Massage down the line of the scar, not round in circles, as that may cause the scar to spread outwards. They used glue so it must have been fairly superficial? - in which case it is less likely to be a significant scar. I remember E45 was a big no no for scars for some reason (can't remember why). I think vitamin E makes them bigger? Please wait until the scar is fully healed before starting any of this though. The other thing we preached was high factor suncream - scars are like baby skin and burn more easily. If they get sun burnt the scar is more likely to remain. Don't let anyone tell you a bit of sun will be good for it. Hope this helps. It doesn't sound too bad and like it will last but it can't be nice to see your little one with a wound like this.

Ds2 has a similar cut when he was about 2. It is now a silver line. He likes his Harry potter star though

Lavri · 22/08/2018 20:50

My son also had a deep long cut to his forehead when he was 3 and he has just turned 5. It's now faded to a silvery skin colour and is barely noticeable (although quite indented). He loves Harry Potter so thinks it's very cool. But for the first year it was red and noticeable. You have my sympathy it was terrifying to see that much blood and he passed out from the shock so that was scary too. I was really upset about the scarring for ages so I totally get that. There are creams you can get to minimise the scarring, we used one that was recommended by the dermatologist but on holidays at moment and can't remember the name, sorry!

scuttlemama · 22/08/2018 20:52

I have a bad scar (not always visible) that I got as a teenager. Doctors injected it with steroids which really reduced redness and the bumpiness. Hopefully it will heal well on us own but there are definitely options to help if not.

CoolCarrie · 22/08/2018 20:52

My ds had a ceiling fan fall on his head last year. It was at school and fell at an angle so the cut was on his forehead and it’s faded a lot, he quite likes it as it’s very Harry Potter, but I was raging. We used a silicone patch on it, which was excellent.

ScattyCharly · 22/08/2018 20:52

Don’t worry about it op. People have scars. I have one from a glass cut, similar to your ds’s on my face. Aged about 3 when it happened. If you look closely you can see it. Most people don’t notice it.

CoolCarrie · 22/08/2018 20:53

Your wee one will be fine, it will heal, just give it time.

donkeysandzebras · 22/08/2018 21:03

DD was a similar age when she had a horrible gash to her forehead which had to be unstuck, re-opened, cleaned and re-glued 24hrs after originally being glued (when I decided to return to A&E and ask why they hadn't cleaned it when I could see grit/dirt in it with the naked eye).
We're now 6yrs on and her forehead has grown but the scar has remained the same size so it appears a lot smaller. I think it is really noticeable - although say otherwise to DD - but am amazed at the number of people who have genuinely never noticed it. When I refer to her scar and people look blank (and these are generally observant people who see her regularly) and then say to me later "oh yes, I see what you mean but I'd never noticed it". DD got a boost recently when a girl who'd been at school for a year and is a great friend of hers just hadn't noticed as then she realised what I said about people not noticing was true.
When it happened, I was amazed at the number of my friends who pointed out scars that they had which I just hadn't ever noticed.

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 22/08/2018 21:07

Ds2 has burn injury scars, we used a ScarSil gel cream which was £44 per 30ml at the time, Ds2 used 8 tubes per week, we're fortunate enough it was prescribed on the NHS, as he needed it for 3 years+

Ds also had silicone injections by GA every 2 weeks for 12 weeks (6 treatments) before a 8 week break then treatment started again for the same duration, again for 3 years.

The gel is expensive, however it does minimalise scars dramatically.

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 22/08/2018 21:11

However I should also advise Ds2 burns would also have reduced in appearance as he grew, Ds1 had a split in his head when he hit his head on a corner table in a cafe, 8 years later its barely visible.
