To think using the kitchen sink for this is revolting.

Essential a kitchen sink is a food prep area. It is for washing food, hands and plates. Maybe sluicing off things that are fairly clean (e.g. getting rid of the water from a flower vase) and filing water containers or attaching a hose.

I think the following are revolting -

  • washing babies (at some level you are washing off poo and wee)
  • washing pets (same as above)
  • brushing teeth (spitting in a food prep area)
  • emptying mop buckets (pour it down the toilet)
  • washing/dying/cutting hair in the kitchen- hair in food prep area
  • washing clothes and shoes in a food prep area.

My stbxh used to use the kitchen sink (and toilet with the seat down) to blow his nose over. Nothing to make you boak like trying to clean off dried hardened snot, then the water softening to make it slimy again. That was reason enough to get shot of him. MIL used to complain to the children about my parenting...one should not throw stones at glass houses...

BitOutOfPractice · 23/08/2018 16:05

Most of this “absolutely disgusting appallingly rank and skanky” things never even cross my mind. And I think I have a pretty clean and tidy house. I’m with @pictish. Too much over thinking.

GerdaLovesLili · 23/08/2018 16:20

The average home probably didn't have a washing machine 50 years ago either.

I've lived without a washing machine: the giant laundry trough was really' useful then! (I did wish I had a mangle though).

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 23/08/2018 16:23

Am I the only one that thinks sinks are gross? Bits of food plus wet environment = loads of germs. If you wash your hands after handling chicken or something the chicken juice can splash everywhere.

I wash my baby off in the sink...but clean it first!

wink1970 · 23/08/2018 16:28

We got rid of our utility room sink, we never used it __and now we can fit a wine cooler in there instead-- so mop buckets, etc all get the kitchen sink treatment. Nobody dead yet....

Powerless · 23/08/2018 16:32

@LRDtheFeministDragon Well said! Grin

This is like when some people find a hair off their partner's head in the bed and start retching!?! Despite having no qualms about running their fingers through their partner's hair......🤷🏼‍♀️

Hideandgo · 23/08/2018 16:37

Do you know what’s disgusting? Life. We should all just give up now. Some people even put penises in their mouth!!!!! And how dare dogs put their bum holes on the couch. So. Gross. I’ve even seen some people take their shoe off with their hand and then touch a door handle!

constantlywingingit · 23/08/2018 16:40
Blush Sometimes I brush my teeth at the kitchen sink. I have braces and very limited time without them in. With two toddlers I just brush them where I can.

I'd never really thought about it, I guess I just thought if I'm cleaning my cups that I've had my mouth on it wouldn't make a difference 🤷🏼‍♀️

yikesanotherbooboo · 23/08/2018 16:43

Well...
Washing babies : no problem
Washing pets: outside hose or bathroom
Brushing teeth : bathroom but I don't really see the problem apart from aesthetics
Emptying mop bucket: loo or possibly outside drain
Washing / cutting hair: I don't but I can't see the problem if the larger sink makes it more convenient
Disclaimer: no futility but I do have an outside tap

constantlywingingit · 23/08/2018 16:44

@Hideandgo
Penises 😂

yikesanotherbooboo · 23/08/2018 16:44

Ps:
Washing clothes: again no problem at all but I would probably not wash shoes on the kitchen sink

pictish · 23/08/2018 16:58

“I’ve even seen some people take their shoe off with their hand and then touch a door handle!”

Fuck sake though. Too much time, too much privilege, not enough to worry about.

imnotreally · 23/08/2018 17:04

What a strange thread. I thought it was going to be about peeing in the sink 🤢

sashh · 23/08/2018 17:05

That's why you have a sink and a washing up bowl.

serbska · 23/08/2018 17:16

'd never really thought about it, I guess I just thought if I'm cleaning my cups that I've had my mouth on it wouldn't make a difference

EWWWWW YOU CLEAN THINGS YOU HAVE PUT IN YOUR MOUTH IN THE SINK?!?!?!

suzy2b · 23/08/2018 17:51

I'v done all those things in the kitchen sink

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 23/08/2018 17:58

It's funny how you can clean all the mud/potential poo off your potatos and carrots well enough to eat them in the sink but yet you can't possibly clean the sink Hmm

Plates/cutlery are covered in saliva, chopping boards and knives are covered in meat juices, the food you're actually washing in the sink is covered in mud, potentially even animal wee or poo. The sink is filled with warm water and germs. A washing up bowl of warm water is like germ soup. Honestly a sink is pretty disgusting that's why we clean it. But if you clean a baby in there or a shoe those germs aren't going to stay around forever, just like all the germs listed above don't. You clean the sink regularly. The saliva from cleaning your teeth is no different to the saliva the baby you just cleaned dribbled all over their bowl.

MN is so competitive. It's like how ridiculously clean can I appear today, but there's no common sense, very minor things suddenly become disgusting. I often wonder what word people of MN would use if someone came on and said "I bathe in dog shite and eat rotten meat out of bins" because we've already used disgusting for "I used the same towel 2 days running"

MerryDeath · 23/08/2018 18:13

babe do you chop raw veg, meat etc in your sink? cos... that's not what sinks are for

I chuck my mop bucket water down there, and have spat toothpaste in it when wandering around whilst brushing.

I'm just glad my mother isn't emptying her catheter bag down there any more. Even if you clean it after, stuff grows in the pipes.

toomanychilder · 23/08/2018 19:06

As for litter trays - if you live in a flat/house with a cat and no other sink or outside tap, how would you clean it?

We clean it outside using a kettle of boiling water

No, they aren't nuts Hmm

First world problems.
Humans are designed to cope with germs.

Senac32 · 23/08/2018 19:37

Another good thing about washing babies in the kitchen sink (which I used to do) is that it's at a sensible height for lifting baby in and out.
And easy to empty, compared with a heavy baby bath.
It was recommended in my days as a young mother, especially for young babies.
