Someone just called me 'ghetto'...

I'm mixed race black and Caucasian, have afro hair pulled in to a bun and a head wrap on (pretty much my go to style), small gold hoop earrings and am wearing a black knee length pencil skirt with a plain black hoodie and silver pumps.

Walked by 2 women on the stairs at the train station and heard one clearly direct at me "she's a bit 'ghetto' looking for " and they both laughed and walked off.

I may have got this completely wrong, but before I jump to conclusions, why on earth would they think I looked 'ghetto'?

AIBU to be sensing a racist undertone? Or is that my paranoia kicking in?

Never been called ghetto before...

They were definitely jealous. When people are mean and spiteful about someone, it's usually because they are secretly jealous and resentful.

And look at the amount of (white) women who try to emulate the features of black and mixed race ladies... getting collagen to make their lips 'fuller,' trying to make their bum look a bit bigger/curvier, and getting spray tans.

Obviously jealous, and wish they look like the OP. That is why they put her down, to try and knock her confidence.

One time (a couple of years ago,) me and my daughter (both white,) were on a train that was packed, and we had seats. Two youngish black women were standing up in the aisle struggling with a number of shopping bags. Me and DD asked them if they wanted our seats, as we were getting off in 10 minutes anyway, and they looked like they were going to fall over! They both looked wide-eyed and shocked, and said' how kind of you, thank you!' I thought it was because they were chuffed to be offered a seat, but it was more than likely because it was a white person offering it, as they are more used to behaviour like the OP has suffered.

Like a few others have said @Parmina I am sorry you suffered this. How nasty. No suggestions though sorry, as I know you cannot ignore such comments so easily. But we sympathise with you on here, and think these bitches were horrid racists twats.

NCasIknowMNetters · 22/08/2018 09:16

I'm so jealous of people who can wear material in their hair with style.

Absolutely it was a racist comment. Undeniably. However it says nothing about you and a lot about the type of person they are.

I've noticed that racist twats are getting their attitudes and words back out to use freely against anything and everyone since the whole Brexit thing. On the plus side I've been able to clear out a lot of dead-wood in my FB account as they announce themselves online; on the negative is that my mouth is going to get me into trouble.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 22/08/2018 09:17

What is a head wrap?

keefthebeef · 22/08/2018 09:18

Well you’d better make sure you give your baby a ‘proper middle class English’ Name op, because I am in a similar financial and professional status to you but MN and the playground bitches said my dcs names are ‘chavy’ by which they mean traditional in my West Indian culture. Racism is everywhere.

LokiBear · 22/08/2018 09:20

I did. To my knowledge he wasnt sacked. I recieved a response telling me that they had previous problems with school groups stealing and the security guards were just being 'hyper vigilant'. And that the security guard was referring to my pupil being a school kid not a black kid. It was bollocks. My pupil was stood on his own, dithering between two items, yes. But he wasn't looking to steal. There were other kids doing the same. Non of the kids were being loud or poorly behaved so there was no need for the security guards to be panicking anyway. Plus, we supervised them. It happened two years ago and still makes me angry. Ive been the head of year for there kids since they were 10 and im very protective of them.

Parmina · 22/08/2018 09:21

@MilkTrayLimeBarrel that isn't me btw. Just some other ghetto girl I found on google.

Someone just called me 'ghetto'...

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 22/08/2018 09:31

Wow - it looks very intricate! How do you stop it unravelling??

DontCallMeCharlotte · 22/08/2018 09:33

your outfit sounds very cool and Lauryn Hill to me.... if that reference doesn’t age me horribly

Took the words right out of my mouth!

parklives · 22/08/2018 09:39

You did a great thing Loki and so did all the kids who supported you and their classmate by not buying anything, fantastic kids!
Shame you got the corporate speak response from the gift shop, but you tried and you never know what impact it had.

Stephisaur · 22/08/2018 09:42

In my head, you look fabulous!

Just outside Birmingham? You must be nearish me then. I can't think how anyone would even bat an eye.

I did like your comment about the ghetto house and baby Grin

apriljune12 · 22/08/2018 09:44

It is indeed but there are twats everywhere you ignore them love ignorant idiots.

apriljune12 · 22/08/2018 09:45

I love that scarf! So pretty. Smile

Birdsgottafly · 22/08/2018 09:45

""not a stealth boast, I couldn't give two hoots what people earn""

Yet you had to include your earnings and were you live, in this thread?

Why is what you earn anymore relevant than your skin colour?

apriljune12 · 22/08/2018 09:45

You must be nearish me too Smile

LARLARLAND · 22/08/2018 09:46

How awful and yes, it was racist to say that.

apriljune12 · 22/08/2018 09:47

Because when you feel someone has tried to belittle you Birds you think fuck you no I have done well. Pretty normal reaction

SnugglySnerd · 22/08/2018 09:47

I'm a Brummie and I am really shocked at this. I can't imagine anyone in or around the city would bat an eyelid at your dress.

Sorry this happened to you Flowers

bringincrazyback · 22/08/2018 09:51

Breathtakingly rude and racist. Don't even give them the power to hurt you with their idiot comment.

Dollymixture22 · 22/08/2018 09:52

That is horrible. You should not have to experience this. They are clearly very pathetic, low class individuals. Not worth a second thought.

You sound like a very stylish confident lady. They sound like comparable idiots.

Elephant14 · 22/08/2018 09:55

If they'd said that to someone in London they'd soon know ghetto innit.

ToadOfSadness · 22/08/2018 09:59

*""not a stealth boast, I couldn't give two hoots what people earn""

Yet you had to include your earnings and were you live, in this thread?

Why is what you earn anymore relevant than your skin colour?*

People who had to live in a ghetto were forced to do so and had very little money or belongings, or work.

I believe that the word is now applied to other races because of poverty or heaven forbid, groups of people with dark skin living in a certain area, often a poorer area.

I love to see the traditional clothing and head wraps, the bright colours, it makes me smile.

Parmina · 22/08/2018 10:01

@Birdsgottafly because someone made a point of saying that they probably thought I was poor.

Because I came from a council flat in Hackney in the 90s and my family had fuck all and I've ensured I don't remain in that environment, which isn't always the easiest thing to do as a black teenager born in to poverty.

Because I was just called 'ghetto' by a racist piece of shit.

Because I worked so damn hard my whole life to not remain in poverty and to actually make a life for myself, and my child.

Because I'm damn proud of the fact that I earn 42k a year - proudly boasting now and not even stealthily.
