To think we're approaching the plastic cup problem in entirely the wrong way?

So far, the main suggestion to replace disposable plastic cups, is a slightly less disposable cup?

We invented genuinely reusable cups quite a long time ago...

We need to start slowing down and actually sitting down for a cuppa again.

Agree!

minisoksmakehardwork · 21/08/2018 16:37

Perhaps. I have China travel cups with a rubber lid. But my plastic one is very convenient when I'm at gymnastics and there are small children running around. I don't want them to accidentally break it and get scalded either.

YorkieDorkie · 21/08/2018 16:39

I have a cool stojo collapsible one that will surely last a lifetime. I'll bequeath it to my daughter when I die Grin

Bunchofdaffodils · 21/08/2018 16:44

You are not unreasonable.

CressidaEgg · 21/08/2018 16:46

i think we should just ban takeaway coffees. We managed without them til the 90s. I'm even going to go out on a limb and suggest that no one ever died of thirst for want of a flat white.

CherryPlum · 21/08/2018 16:47

I don't think we can backtrack now and slow down, same way we can't go back to doffing a hat and saying good morning to every person we pass in the street. So there needs to be a compromise for coffee on the move.

thereareflowersinmygarden · 21/08/2018 16:52

Backtrack? I'd see it as a move forward, genuine progress.

I've stopped buying them- unless I have time to sit down and drink from a proper cup.

I have a busy life, ten minutes for a cuppa is doable.

YABU to use the word 'cuppa'

Alicatz66 · 21/08/2018 16:57

I agree.. "cuppa" can go on the list with "hubby" "cosy" and "squeeeeeeeee"

thereareflowersinmygarden · 21/08/2018 16:57

Sorry, northern

Sorry for de railing the thread .... I've got a nice plastic reusable cup from Waitrose .. I lug it about to feel smug in Pret ( and get 50p off my coffee)

And the multi-billion pound coffee industry just disappears overnight? There are over 22,000 coffee shops in the UK alone, how many jobs do you think that is? Plus all the connected industry....

Butteredparsn1ps · 21/08/2018 17:01

I agree with you and I carry a refillable cup with me. But I wish coffee places would help with the washing up situation too! and I'd love a leakproof coffee cup carrier.

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 21/08/2018 17:01

I’ve never understood these people who fly around with a take away cup constantly on the go. Sit the fuck down and drink your coffee! How can you enjoy coffee whilst running around, jumping on trains, walking to work etc? You’ll survive without it until you get into work you know! Maybe they should all just get an IV set up.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/08/2018 17:06

Yes, I also think lugging a takeaway Costa about has become a thing, since gym bunny WAGs started being photographed doing it a few years back. Also the “I can’t possibly LIVE without my coffee on the way to work” attitude which is annoying as “Squee, it’s wine o’clock” trite sayings.

It’s like virtue signalling, except it’s to show how busy your life is (what, you REALLY have no time to make a coffee as you’re getting ready for work in the morning? Or make one when you get to work 20 mins later?)

they had it right on the continent, with the coffee culture there. Everyone stopping every so often for 15-20 mins at a coffee shop (on every corner), meeting a friend after work for a quick chat and a coffee in a china cup. But on holiday in Majorca this year I noticed the “takeaway lifestyle” creeping in.

JassyRadlett · 21/08/2018 17:10

I am super at multitasking. I also have an audiobook or podcast on the go. I bloody love my commute.

You’ll survive without it until you get into work you know!

But there’s not a cafe at my work. Can’t I have nice coffee and carry it in my (bamboo reusable) cup so I can drink it on the way to/at work?

On reflection, I enjoy it more when walking then when at my desk with the world and his wife wanting something the second I sit down.

Maybe they should all just get an IV set up.

Time saving but less enjoyable.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/08/2018 17:10

why is it always takeaway coffee anyway? it’s never tea, as that isn’t cool enough, according to the teens round here.

Hot drinks in a paper or plastic cup taste shite anyway. True coffee connoisseurs wouldn’t ever drink it out of a takeaway cup, slugging it down every so often as they queue for the the barrier and then again on the escalator.

butlerswharf · 21/08/2018 17:12

@JassyRadlett you pretty much took the words right out of my mouth! Plus the coffee i grab on my way to work is my daily treat and is way better than any I can make at home or get at work.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/08/2018 17:13

Do the coffee-on-the-commute people not have breakfast, out of interest?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/08/2018 17:13

At home, I mean?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/08/2018 17:14

Nonsense,,Butlers, you can get fab coffee machines for home use these days.

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 21/08/2018 17:15

I tried to have tea in a china travel mug with a silicone lid. Bought it specifically to get on the “look like a busy person” wagon Wink bleaurgh. Tea tasted rotten and then it was a just a faff carrying around the half full cup of cold tea sloshing about in it. Poured the tea down a drain but still had the bloody cup to cart around with me.

iklboo · 21/08/2018 17:16

I don't. I honestly can't face eating for at least three hours after I get up. I like my job, but I'm not going to get up at 3:30am just so I can have breakfast before I go out Grin

RiddleyW · 21/08/2018 17:17

Not sure what your point is here - is it that only “true coffee connoisseurs” should drink coffee?
