I seem to be really struggling to find something; I'm looking for a Research / Lab Management Role, or Data Analyst / Scientist Role in London.

A lot advertised, but zero responses to any applications I have submitted.

I graduated with my post grad and wanted to work with a specific company. I applied for a few graduate jobs with them and got the one I wanted. For me, it was pretty streamlined, fortunately.

Put my CV up on Reed, was contacted independently about a brand new role by a recruitment agent.

MargaretCabbage · 20/08/2018 19:29

I was promoted to my current role after originally starting in an entry level position that was advertised on a jobs website, I applied with a CV and had an interview. I’m the only person in the company who was employed in this way though, it’s a split between people who knew the director and experienced people who walked in with a CV and impressed him - most of them were working on a casual basis before getting the full time role.

Jobs.ac.uk is your best bet. Or check the uni jobs pages. Universities have very standardised recruitment procedures so using recruitment agencies wouldn't be successful usually.

WeAreGoingOnAJobHunt · 20/08/2018 19:38

I haven't actually tried a recruiter; so I will look for one in my field. I've been using the likes of CV Library and Indeed, but I had forgotten about jobs.ac.uk - thank you.

I'm going to see the careers service at my University as well shortly, takes a while to get an appointment. I'm told my writing is excellent and I always have cover letters proof read and match up experience with the criteria in the jobs advert. I did get told my CV didn't show my skills enough by one person, but it's hard to keep it to two pages when you have to three four jobs and three degrees on there. Not entirely sure how you go on about skills as well? This is what I am going to see the careers service about.

Thank you very much for all the suggestions.

I started in an entry level job advertised in the paper (I applied for this to get experience as I'd not been working in the field for a few years while the DC were small) then over the next 5 years I've climbed a few grades through promotions/maternity cover/new projects. Not quite where I want to be yet but I will get there.

I got headhunted! Still can't believe it. Obviously had an interview afterwards. Had yo fill in an application form a few weeks later for my employee record.

Glumglowworm · 20/08/2018 20:06

Walked into a temp agency after moving to my city 12 years ago, did a very brief basic computer test, got offered a temp job on the spot. A few months later I got made permanent by the employer I was temping for and 12 years later I’m still there! I’ve moved around internally several times, and got my current role after an internal interview a few years ago.

GrumpyOldMare · 20/08/2018 20:18

A friend of mine knew there was a job going (it's a job I've done before for years),so she told me to go and see the manager (who she knew) 4 years later I'm still there.

Went out for dinner with a friend who said "OMG we are desperate for someone like you". Started two weeks later (I was SAHM at that point but youngest had just started preschool so was the right time)

DH has got so many jobs from word of mouth. Chatting to another dad at swim lessons was one of them. (App development & database management).

Barker26 · 20/08/2018 21:27

Did an apprenticeship in vehicle maintenance and repair, applied for a sales job only got it because of my qualification don't think I'd have got it otherwise as female ! (Motor trade still quite sexist) 6 years later manager of one of the biggest branches in the UK at the age of 26

mrslupin · 20/08/2018 21:33

I got headhunted on LinkedIn

Pompom42 · 20/08/2018 21:39

Saw it on a job site the hours advertised wasn't suited to me so asked for lesser hours and they agreed

Murinae · 21/08/2018 18:42

At our uni you don’t do a cover letter you just have cv and a supporting statement. The supporting statement should cover point by point how you fulfill the essential criteria with your skills and evidence it where you can followed by the desirable criteria. If you don’t evidence how you fulfil all the essential criteria they can’t shortlist you.
