I seem to be really struggling to find something; I'm looking for a Research / Lab Management Role, or Data Analyst / Scientist Role in London.

A lot advertised, but zero responses to any applications I have submitted.

OP posts:

An old colleague knew I was looking and put my name forward. I was asked to provide a CV which was followed up by a chat the following day.

In the past month I’ve had a round robin text from someone looking for work and another person letting me know about an opportunity. It’s pretty normal in my industry in addition to recruiting agents/LinkedIn and job adverts. I’ve had jobs from all of these avenues at some time or another.

WeeBeasties · 20/08/2018 18:23

I was approached on Linkedin. It's certainly worth keeping your profile up to date and if you can mention in your profile that you're looking for new opportunitied recruiters will feel that they can contact you.

shapeshifter88 · 20/08/2018 18:25

put my cv on and recruiters just call

pandarific · 20/08/2018 18:25

I made a list of companies I was interested in and looked at the websites of the companies direct. For one reason or another lots of companies don't stick it up on indeed or wherever, so you only see jobs on their websites or on LinkedIn etc.

shapeshifter88 · 20/08/2018 18:25

on linkedin that should have said

OftenHangry · 20/08/2018 18:26

Have you had your cv checked? Is it up to today's standards?
And have a look at your motivation letter too. Sometimes there can be bits which nirmal person finds ok, but recriter doesn't.

sonjadog · 20/08/2018 18:28

Saw advert on online job site, applied, interviewed, offered job.

HermioneWeasley · 20/08/2018 18:29

There’s a huge shortage of data scientists- I’m astonished you’ve not been snapped up.

Definitely update your linked in profile. Then I would decide which companies you fancy working for and apply directly (anyone who needs data scientists will have a jobs section on their website).

Good luck, I’m sure you’ll have your pick

BalancingStick · 20/08/2018 18:29

Recruitment consultant found me on linked in. 3 interviews later was offered my dream job by fab company

Meltingwax · 20/08/2018 18:31

I saw an advert in the Guardian - 2 rounds of interviews and was then offered the role.

Are you moving from a similar job OP or are you starting from scratch? Assuming you have the right levels of qualifications and experience they are after? Do you meet all the essential and some of the desirable criteria for the roles you are applying for? Are your applications well written with no spelling errors/typos?

Poptart4 · 20/08/2018 18:33

Ive gotten all of my jobs through friends that already worked in the company and put a good word in for me.

I was applying for jobs for 2 years without so much as an interview when my friend got me my current job. I had spent 10yrs at home as a stay at home mum. I think employers took one look at the huge gap in my CV and decided i wasnt worth considering.

Murinae · 20/08/2018 18:36

I’m a lab manager and applied for the job off the uni website. Luckily my boss had just moved to the uni and so there wasn’t a candidate already in place.

madcatladyforever · 20/08/2018 18:38

Heard about my job from a friend whose friend was working there. Rang up the boss the next day and got an interview and the job.

HollyGoLoudly1 · 20/08/2018 18:39

I'm also in the scientific field and used a specialist recruitment agency - plenty around or the bigger recruitment agencies sometimes have a science/technical specific department. Always found them helpful. Good luck!

Murinae · 20/08/2018 18:41

Make sure you list every essential criteria in the job and evidence how you meet them in your application. At our uni any essential criteria missing and they won’t shortlist you.

NeverTwerkNaked · 20/08/2018 18:42

Applied for a maternity cover role, worked my socks off, got offered a permanent role! Was a big gamble putting DS into nursery for what might have only been a few months work but I am so glad I did as I am still working here a decade later!

NeverTwerkNaked · 20/08/2018 18:44

I would definitely get CV advice if you are applying for jobs you are qualified for but not getting anywhere. We have just been through a really frustrating application process because some of the candidates with really good qualifications had just totally let themselves down when it came to filling out the rest of the application form.

TravellingFleet · 20/08/2018 18:46

Saw the job advertised on the Guardian website, applied with my CV, they checked my references, I had a long interview including a test of work under exam conditions, they checked some more references and I got the job.

hesbeeneatingapotato · 20/08/2018 18:56

I worked as a contractor in my field for about five years, I then was offered a permanent post with my current employer Smile

Lunaballoon · 20/08/2018 19:10

Scanned the websites of companies that were likely to need my role. Applied for one position directly, got shortlisted after a couple of interviews and was offered the job.

MedSchoolRat · 20/08/2018 19:15

I'm not in London but I did try for a load of data analyst jobs b4 ending up with current employer. I'm better as a 'researcher' I guess.

In last 5 yrs:
"Saw it advertised on the Uni website. Applied. Interviewed. Offered. Accepted." (twice, last time was only eligible applicant).
1 x job : Someone bid for 6 months money with my name on it.
Other jobs: very short term contracts plus a bit of consultancy.
Lots of part-time bits add up to whatever my FTE is right now. This is an advantage, when they only have small pots of money.

vitaminC · 20/08/2018 19:21

Got chatting to a dad at the school gate, hit it off (we work in the same field) and exchanged numbers, sayign we would grab a coffee some time...
A week later he phoned me and asked if I was interested in working with him as they needed someone with my skills in his team. This felt like fate giving me a helping hand, as my husband was out of work and the salary on offer was amazing!
I said yes please. He gave his boss my number and I had a phone interview the next day and started working with them a couple of weeks after that.
It's been 3 years now. I still love my job and he and I are still good friends Smile

ImTakingTheEssence · 20/08/2018 19:22

Applied on indeed had the qualifications for the job but no experience in that area. Had interview did ok i thought. Got a letter offering me the job. 6 months later changed jobs within the company. Still there two years later. Don't know to this day how i got it.

Rhayader · 20/08/2018 19:23

You would be able to find data analyst jobs on “civil service jobs”. Posts are generally advertised for 4 weeks so keep an eye out

Mehaveit · 20/08/2018 19:24

I did a speculative application selling why they needed me. Turns out they did. Love my job!
