To wonder how the fluffing hell you can 'fall off' a cruise ship?!

I mean HOW? Just HOW?

I am an average height (5 ft 4ish) and the rail was up to my chest when me and DH went on a cruise ship 3 years ago. It was like this on the attached pic.

So she fell off her cruise ship and no one noticed? And then got rescued by another ship?

Jenasaurus · 20/08/2018 15:35

bless our mums TSSDNCOP my way of dealing with it when I became a mum was to make sure they all learnt to swim and life save...that way I can leave my arm bands at home if I fall in (as long as they are with me)

Is that 28 people who actually fall (or jump, or are pushed) overboard, or does that include people who go ashore and don't come back, or simply can't be found on board by their travelling companions?

Cruise ships are big places. If you wanted to hide from friends/family, it would probably be quite easy to do, especially if you hooked up with another passenger or a crew member and just stayed in their cabin.

MargoLovebutter · 20/08/2018 15:42

Firstly, I'm glad that whatever happened - no one died or got seriously hurt.

Secondly, I'm so dubious about "falling" too. How the fuck do you fall of a cruise ship? You have to somehow have put yourself outside the safety railings in order to do this because you can't just randomly fall off of a ship - as there are safety measures - such as high railings to prevent this! As she was at the back of the ship, I'm thinking not the re-enactment of Titanic but probably something equally stupid. If it is somehow completely innocent, I will seek more therapy to work on my inner bitch! Grin

HavingALittleBabyToolshed · 20/08/2018 15:42

There's some reports around that say she kept her spirits up by singing.

WE ARE SAILING, WE ARE SAILING

Mrbatmun · 20/08/2018 15:44

Yes if yiu wanted to disappear you wouldn't need to jump overboard, you could just get off one of the days they are in port and not come back on.

BarbaraofSevillle · 20/08/2018 15:44

Or 10 people?

It's one of those stories where you wonder 'why has this made the news ' if it happens quite often, but you almost never hear of it?

Is it because she survived and most people don't? I suppose their could be an element of 'attractive white woman' about it (it is well known that stories involving attractive white women or girls are much more likely to end up in the press than similar events involving men/boys, less attractive women, or people of other races).

Or has she made sure herself that it ended up in the news? I'm not sure I'd want that, especially if investigation finds that she jumped, or fell while pissed or doing something stupid.

It is very odd. Either slightly drunk and horsing around (can't have been too drunk or would have drowned), or a deliberate jump.

SerenDippitty · 20/08/2018 15:49

If it was a deliberate act on her part, and I fail to see how it could not have been, I think she should be heavily fined, seeing as the cruise schedule was disrupted because of her and people missed their flights home.

Mrbatmun · 20/08/2018 15:50

I just watched the video on the BBC. She seems to be happily describing what happened, all quite jolly and has to be cut off by someone who leads her into an ambulance. Maybe she is just in shock?

She said she was sitting on the back deck, so presumably sitting on top of the balcony and fell/jumped? It's on CCTV so the company must know?

Aprilsinparis · 20/08/2018 15:50

Madbengalmum Yes, definitely pushed by one, or all of her "Friends" She came across as an irritating arse.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 20/08/2018 15:51

Steve Wright, Suffolk Stranger, worked on cruise ships.

SirGawain · 20/08/2018 15:55

It would be virtually imposible for a sober person to accidently fall over the rail at the back, (or anywhere else), on a modern cruise ship.

Momo27 · 20/08/2018 15:55

She came across as a twat. If there’s evidence it was deliberate or due to sheer stupidity I hope she has the shit fined out of her. It must have caused massive disruption to other passengers who would have had holidays disrupted, missed connecting flights, or important family events due to the delay

user1457017537 · 20/08/2018 15:56

Well apparently she put her bag and passport down on the floor where they were found. If she just “fell” in wouldn’t she have been holding them

MNOverinvestor · 20/08/2018 15:59

My take, definitely a bit pissed (but not overly so otherwise she would have died) and larking around/having arguments but I always maintain that I'd want flight crew around me in an emergency - they're really well-trained (well, the ones for established, long-haul airlines are - they have to pass exams each year in really obscure emergency knowledge).

DistanceCall · 20/08/2018 16:01

It's very odd. I was told by a professional sailor that cruise ships (at least the very big ones) won't stop if the realise someone has fallen over the rail. They assume that the person will have been killed by the fall.

caperberries · 20/08/2018 16:02

She does seem rather attention seeking and appears to have a drinking problem, but there's something quite heroic about her feat, all the same.

She's certainly very brave

SirGawain · 20/08/2018 16:02

The waiter briefly looked out the window, shrugged and went on his way, which did make me think maybe this happens a lot?
The waiter has his job to do. There will be a response team who will initiate the appropriate measures. The entire crew of 800 or more don't dash on deck to see what is going on. The ship and passengers still needs to be looked after.

Crazylady87 · 20/08/2018 16:02

Im suprisied she survived. Not long ago an auzzie woman jumped overboard and even though they threw the life thingy over immediately she drowed and was not recovered. He hasband wittnessed the whole thing. Hers was an intentional act

HellonHeels · 20/08/2018 16:02

I think you have a passenger card on the ship that's scanned as you leave to go ashore and as you come back on board so not so easy just to disappear.

If it's true she is cabin crew perhaps they get training on how to survive at sea? Anyone here know about that?

Agree that the whole story is odd.
