The British on holiday

Flip me! I have just watched the news and seen the item about the passenger who "fell off the back of the ship" whilst on a cruise. I am lucky enough to have cruised a great deal and there is no way you can just fall off! The barriers around the decks and cabins are very high. It seems that, as well as falling off balconies in Spain, people are managing to dive into the ocean as part of their holiday experience.

They’re not commenting on the circumstances of her fall so i suspect it might not have been entirely accidental...

LyndorCake · 19/08/2018 22:21

I worked on cruise ships for years sailing out of ports across the globe. People went overboard around 2 out of 5 cruises.
Some were pushed during an argument, some suicidal, some drunk, some stupid, some accidental.

ghostyslovesheets · 19/08/2018 22:22

1 person falling off a boat equates to 'all' the British on holiday?

I am British

I have never fallen off a boat or a balcony

hth

LyndorCake · 19/08/2018 22:23

Also, the barrier around the open decks aren't actually that high. Standard height really.

Scabetty · 19/08/2018 22:26

Well you gotta do titanic on a ship and whoops, splash. Totally understandable Grin

EnglishGirlApproximately · 19/08/2018 22:26

You can’t fall off of a cruise ship, there’s clearly more to this than is being reported. Of course it isn’t just Brits doing stuff like this, there’s quite often incidents on Carnival shups which are largely US passengers. I can recall a very lucky teenage idiot a couple of years ago who filmed himself climbing over the railings for fun Hmm

missyB1 · 19/08/2018 22:27

At first I just assumed she was drunk, but then she probably would have drowned, so I’m guessing she wasn’t. How did she survive 10 hours in the sea??

Growingboys · 19/08/2018 22:27

Ha ghosty me too!

HelpmeobiMN · 19/08/2018 22:27

To be honest I’ve always thought cruises look so bleakly awful that I’d probably hurl myself off of the back of the boat after a couple of days too.

Ohhbollix · 19/08/2018 22:28

What a stupid title to your OP

SouthWestmom · 19/08/2018 22:28

2/5 - bloody hell thats crap stats. How???

southnownorth · 19/08/2018 22:28

I have always thought alcohol and balconies/cruise ships is a terrible combination.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 19/08/2018 22:29

I can't wait to hear more about the cruise story as the details don't make a lot of sense ATM!

LyndorCake · 19/08/2018 22:30

Ah balls, sorry, I meant 1 out of 10. I'm tired and for some reason my brain told me 2 out of 5 was the same. Damn you sleep deprivation!!! But it did happen more than you'd think. We lost a member of the crew overboard once due to suicide.
People always think a cruise is a good place to die. Pretty, peaceful, exciting.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 19/08/2018 22:31

idiotic teenager

SouthWestmom · 19/08/2018 22:34

Wow. Still a lot. Did they all die? I'm assuming there was an element at least of contributing to it? (Sorry about your colleague that must be horrible).

keyboardkate · 19/08/2018 22:44

Agree that a cruise would probably make me woman overboard, over bored lol.

Glad the lady is ok anyway but no one knows.

Now back to cruises. Did one around the Med, but never again. Just not for me. I am sure lots of people enjoy them. But I don't get it. Individual thing obv.

Theimpossiblegirl · 19/08/2018 22:48

The title doesn't match the thread at all, very odd. Do you mean she only went overboard because she's British? Makes no sense to me...

RebelRogue · 19/08/2018 22:54

No idea about this case in particular, but some people are idiots.

Signs with "kids not allowed because of h&s" ..15 kids jumping up and down on it.

Things shut while security had to remove a guest from a restricted area.

People standing when they shouldn't. Refusing to leave bags behind. Wearing inappropriate foot wear etc.

They end up ruining for everyone else too as there will be more rules , enforced more tightly . And then they moan about "elf&safety".

keyboardkate · 19/08/2018 22:57

There is an awful lot to be said for privacy if you can afford it. That is me.

Don't want to be in any stranger's company for my holidays. Too tiring making small talk, and I will never see them again either.

LyndorCake · 19/08/2018 22:58

Depends what they land on. Many actually land on a lower deck. We had reports of guests just going to missing. Friends or family assume they are on another part of the ship. It's only when they discover someone is missing that we launch a code 'Oscar' which means the crew search the entire vessel. If they are not found it is assumed they have gone overboard.
I've known guests fall off the gangway too. That was my biggest fear. I never stepped on a crowded gangway if I could help it.

Bunnybigears · 19/08/2018 23:01

There has to be lots more to this story. I very much doubt she survived treading water for 10 hours!

longtimelurkingtrans · 19/08/2018 23:16

Would love to know the full story of how this happened, You just don't simply overboard especially on a passenger ship where they minimise the risk to non professional seafarers ie passengers. I will say I am impressed that she survived 10 hours in the water especially after a fall into the sea from a decent height.

Eminado · 19/08/2018 23:21

How did she survive 10 hours in the sea??

This is really what I would like to know.

PineappleLava · 19/08/2018 23:25

I too am interested how she survived 10 hours in the sea.
